Hi all! I have just created [!boomersbeingfools@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/boomersbeingfools) for a place to share stories\n

about boomers\n

I am not a moderator on the subreddit, nor am I affiliated with the subreddit-- however I am open to their mods coming over here and joining the team as well.\n

Hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday season! <3\n

Edit: Tried making MillennialsBeingFools (or variations) as well and was unable to.

I am mulling over this as my project for the long weekend.\n

Currently my SteamVR won’t talk to ALVR. But I do have ALVR on my Quest 3. I am thinking that if I can just get SteamVR to talk to ALVR, I’ll be set.\n
\n
I really want to get it working. I really want to get SkyrimVR as well with some good mods. Half Life Alyx is too scary for me :(. I hate having to boot up Win10 to play VR. Knowing there’s a bajillion daemons running around and sucking up my data, giving it to Microsoft only to regurgitate it to force feed me ads, makes me sick.\n
\n
Anyway, my question is… Am I insane? Has anyone actually managed to get PCVR working on linux or is it a completely unfeasible project that I should drop now before I wind up with PTSD?\n

Thank you in advance!

well it’s less about surround and more about sinks in general. I have 3 hardware sinks. My headphones, my monitor and my mic for some reason has a headphone jack. When I pick the virtual surround sink as default it works perfectly. However the device I’m hearing the sounds from is uncontrollable. It likes to choose my microphone, so I get no sound. The way I figured out I can temporarily change this is by setting the default to my headset, and back to surround.\n

Now I wouldn’t want to do this every time I start listening to anything. How can I make it so that the virtual sink’s output is at a specified device. Or alternatively I looked into, maybe I can just disable these unused sinks, turns out I can only turn off alsa ports, which won’t do as it’d disable my microphone’s source part as well.\n

Arch, kde, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber is installed but I didn’t find a use for it so far\n

Hey all\n
\n
A few years ago, when I started my journey into the realm of open source, decentralisation and privacy as an ignorant, naïve young internet user, I had already registered with numerous companies without giving it much thought. I randomly signed up for services using my google and microsoft email addresses, which I opened when I was very young.\n
\n
I have been struggling with this naivety and carelessness of my younger self for several years now. During this time I have gone through all the services I have ever registered for, requested my data everywhere, written dozens of emails, deleted my google account a year ago, then the amazon account, my apple account and yesterday now also the microsoft account, together with the email I have used the longest and replaced everything with open source, privacy respecting services.\n
\n
Now there’s only one big player missing, as you can imagine. Yes, Meta has me in its grip like no other company with its chat service WhatsApp. I myself would have been ready to finally ditch this increasingly bad service long ago unfortunately, those around me don’t see it the same way.\n
\n
But I have now started my preparations:\n
\n
- I have cleared out, structured and organised all my contacts.\n
- I have said goodbye to all long-dead groups.\n
\n
And now comes the exciting part: \n
in the near future, I will write a message to my most important contacts explaining that WhatsApp, with all its clutter, has become a burden for me and that there are better, privacy-respecting alternatives. I will suggest Signal to them and explain that I will slowly withdraw from WhatsApp. I won’t be on the platform as often, but I’ll still be available for emergencies. And that they should take a look at this very familiar looking app. their data and I will thank them for it :)\n
\n
In conclusion, I would like to say that I have realised that you can achieve anything, not radically, but in incremental steps. Especially when others are affected, you have to give them space and time to familiarise themselves with the alternatives without having to deviate from your own convictions. And if there is no other way and if they are also averse to this plan in the long term, new ways will be found. I have already lived without a mobile phone for more than half a year a few times and have also managed that.\n
\n
What do you think? I’m interested in your opinion :)

I’m an EE by trade focusing on embedded devices, but most of my work is in relatively low-power STM32 applications. When I stopped following developments in hobby kits, it was mostly Arduino Unos slowly driving I2C OLED displays.\n

Now suddenly, there are embedded Raspberry Pis and ESP32s doing realtime facial recognition and video feeds.\n

Is there a good place to look to catch up on what’s now possible with these embedded devices?\n

Also, while I enjoy the ease of the hobby kits, I’m also interested in more mass-production-focused solutions.

I’m an EE by trade focusing on embedded devices, but most of my work is in relatively low-power STM32 applications. When I stopped following developments in hobby kits, it was mostly Arduino Unos slowly driving I2C OLED displays.\n

Is there a good place to look to catch up on what’s now possible with these embedded devices?\n
