+title: "[DISCUSSION] The "Golden Age" of Live-Action Revival Films Based on Classic TV Shows"
+url: null
+body: """
I recently re-watched “The Flintstones” (1993). It both reminded and blew me away by how well they revived the classic animated series and brought it to life in such amazing detail while staying perfectly true to the source material.\n
\n
Then, I started thinking about how there was a kind of “golden age” of revival films based on classic TV shows that hadn’t yet received feature-length films. Not to mention, most of them were pretty entertaining, if not excellent. I began compiling a list.\n
\n
The parameters of the list are as follows:\n
\n
1. The original IP must be a television series with a premier date prior to 1970.\n
2. It must be a live-action, feature-length, theatrical release between 1990 and 1999.\n
3. It must feature an all new cast (but cameos are permitted).\n
4. It must not be a continuation of the original series’ storyline.\n
5. It must not be a spin-off of the original series from which it is based.\n
\n
And so, here is the list I came up with:\n
\n
- “The Addams Family” (1991)\n
- “The Beverly Hillbillies” (1993)\n
- “Addams Family Values” (1993)\n
- “Dennis the Menace” (1993)\n
- “The Flintstones” (1994)\n
- “The Brady Bunch Movie” (1995)\n
- “A Very Brady Sequel” (1996)\n
\n
This marks the end of this “golden age” in my mind and I feel the quality of these revival films began to slide as their novelty began to fade and audiences began to lose interest:\n
\n
- “McHale’s Navy” (1997)\n
- “George of the Jungle” (1997)\n
- “Leave It to Beaver” (1997)\n
- “Lost in Space” (1998)\n
- “Dudley Do-Right” (1999)\n
- “Wild Wild West” (1999)\n
\n
Admittedly, I haven’t seen (or don’t remember seeing) most of the post-1996 films, so perhaps I’m being unfair to some of them.\n
\n
Honorable mentions:\n
\n
- “The Little Rascals” (1994)\n
- - While the original IP is not a television, but a short film series from the 20s, 30s, and 40s, I do feel it deserves to be included with the 90s revival films mentioned above. It was just so well done!\n
- “Josie and the Pussy Cats” (2001)\n
- - It lies just outside the parameters I’ve established with the original show premiering in 1970 and the film adaptation being released in 2001. However, it does have a distinctly 2000s look and feel as opposed to its 90s counterparts mentioned above. Still, it was a surprisingly great film and deserves a mention.\n
\n
So, what do you think? Did I miss any? What are some of your favorites? Did I pay too much attention to American comedies? Am I wrong about some or all of them? Are there any that should be revisited?

I’ve been running HA for a while, and it’s been working well; I haven’t had to change much in a few months. That being said, it’s fun to tinker with it, and I’m curious to hear what kind of automations the rest of the community is using. What automations are you most proud of? What are your favorite? What kind of interesting automations have you written?\n
\n
My personal favorite is an automation that displays the current “apparent” temperature on a Hue bulb. It takes an average of the temperature, humidity, and luminance around my property and uses the average to compute an “apparent” (feels like) temperature. Then it applies a cosine function to the apparent temperature (to approximate how people feel temperature change), uses the resulting value to calculate a level between blue and red in CIELAB (a perceptually uniform color space), converts the results to RGB, and sets the color value of the hue bulb. The result is a bulb that changes color so that the change in color (as perceived by the eye) mirrors how the temperature “feels” outside. Ultimately what that means is that we can look at a small lamp with the hue bulb and say “It feels cold outside; we should put on a coat.” It’s probably overkill, but it was a fun programming exercise. We’ve started saying things like “It’s really blue today, I don’t feel like going out.”\n
\n
I’d really enjoy reading what kind of interesting automations everyone else has written.

Capitalism is a game where only a few people get to win.\n
\n
We have also seen time and time again that it is a game that is able to manipulate and change whatever ideology or behaviour you have to work towards its own benefit.\n
\n
So the only way to actually “win” is to not play the game.\n
\n
Right now that seems impossible because it is a massive collective action problem, however this whole platform is a testament to show that it’s possible to overcome that kind of problem.\n
\n
Reddit is a dominant platform that is starting to destroy itself. People are in turn finding alternatives such as Lemmy to satisfy the need that Reddit once did.\n
\n
I view capitalism in the same way. It will never truly completely cease to exist (the same way Digg never truly died), but it can become irrelevant over time if we collectively decide to just use another system to satisfy the same needs that capitalism is satisfying today.\n
\n
The one example that I can think of that tries to tackle this problem is the idea of free stores that are based on a gift economy. If more people decided to use this system instead of capitalism then capitalism will have less sway over people’s lives.\n
\n
And in the end it doesn’t have to be specifically a free store that needs to be adopted by wider society but whatever it is does need to satisfy the same basic need that capitalism does in our current society.

Capitalism is a game where only a few people get to win.\n

We have also seen time and time again that it is a game that is able to manipulate and change whatever ideology or behaviour you have to work towards its own benefit.\n

So the only way to actually “win” is to not play the game.\n

Right now that seems impossible because it is a massive collective action problem, however this whole platform is a testament to show that it’s possible to overcome that kind of problem.\n
