I use multiple workspaces and I open text files all the time.\n

Once upon a time Mousepad used to behave sanely and would open them in a new tab if there was already an instance on the current workspace, or open a new window (on the current workspace) if there wasn’t.\n
\n
They broke that at some point. Now it’s anybody’s guess where the file will open. Maybe it opens in a tab in an existing window on this workspace. Maybe in a tab in a window on a random workspace. Maybe a new window on this workspace even though there’s one open. I’ve given up trying to figure it out.\n
\n
As a last resort I can use `wmctrl` to figure out how to open the files and can script a sane launcher myself – provided that the editor has `–tab` and `–window` options AND lets you specify the window instance. Mousepad has the former but not the latter.\n
\n
So, do you know any editor that can do it by itself or has those options so I can do it myself? TIA

So in this episode they go into a cave, and can read some sort of energy field, as well as Troi having a sense that there are lifeforms present. Geordie explains that the people must be displaced in time, but only by a few milliseconds. If that’s true, how is there not overlap? Say the people are a few milliseconds ahead of the enterprise when they arrive, shouldn’t they appear a few milliseconds later, as they still would have had to be ‘present’ during that time? I don’t understand how they would be consistently invisible if time is a dimension like space that can be traveled through. Some past (or future) version of them would be present regardless of the desynchronization would they not?\n
\n
Please if anyone could help me understand or shed some light on this I’d appreciate it.

+slug: "Is-this-VPN-comparison-breakdown-trustworthy"
+title: "Is this VPN comparison breakdown trustworthy?"
+url: null
+body: """
I’m shopping for a VPN providers, and really struggling to find a detailed and non-biased breakdown of the various options. A number of years ago, I recall finding an extremely detailed VPN comparison spreadsheet that had 30+ columns, which were contained criteria by which the VPNs were judged both quantitatively and qualitatively. I can no longer find that table, so I suspect it has been removed, but I did find the less-comprehensive table, below:\n
\n
[docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/…/edit?usp=sharing](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ijfqfLrJWLUVBfJZ_YalVpstWsjw-JGzkvMd6u2jqEk/edit?usp=sharing)\n
\n
In the thread posted by the owner of this sheet, a few commenters pointed out that the highest rated VPN providers in this table just happen to be the ones that advertise most aggressively and are well-known for buying positive reviews from tech blogs, which are pretty clearly designed to be misleading. I too am suspicious that this table can’t be trusted, however I really am not knowledgeable about VPNs, so before passing judgement, I figured I should consult those who know more about it. I also recognize that a strong marketing team and an excellent product aren’t mutually exclusive, however I think that generally applies more in markets where economies of scale play a significant role, as does mass-adoption, which fuels loads of well-informed, independent research (ex: the car market and phone market.) That obviously isn’t the case with the VPN markets… but I’m still sorta holding out hope.\n
\n
If I end up excluding this table, I’m not sure where to turn at that point. Shilling is extremely pervasive in the VPN market, so it’s tough to trust any one person or any one thread. It’s also well established that a few of the large VPNs actually own a number of review blogs, so I can’t really trust blogs either.\n
\n
I guess I’m here hoping to be told that my suspicions about this table are unfounded, and / or that another excellent, unbiased resource for comparative VPN info exists. Any help would be appreciated!

+url: null
+body: """
I have a Clevo NV41MZ, which is sold by Novacustom and they, together with [3mdeb](3mdeb.com) develop Coreboot for the Clevo Laptops.\n
\n
Its pretty great as their Distribution (Dasharo) as well as Heads run on it, I guess theirs is better optimized and it looks secure and feature complete.\n
\n
So very great laptop, also did a Benchmark against my T495 and was shocked about literally twice the performance! Its pretty loud but Dasharo actually fixes that.\n
\n
Keyboard problem\n
----------------\n
\n
So… bad part, the keyboard.\n
\n
\n
\n
Its crap, not unusable, but my T495 is the best Keyboard I ever used. Lower travel than on my (also corebootable) T430, nice rubbery keys etc.\n
\n
\n
\n
Interesting though, you cant replace the keycaps, while you can on the Clevo boards.\n
\n
Also Novacustom sells the Clevo keyboards and you can get custom engraving, layout, font, everything, you can literally design your own keyboard, its pretty damn cool.\n
\n
But… they keyboard is still a huge deal, and as I only want to have one Laptop (lol you wish) it should be good for writing Bachelor thesis stuff on it.\n
\n
Keyboard to USB\n
---------------\n
\n
There is a like 10 years old video of some guy hacking such an internal keyboard to USB, sniffing the keypresses and all.\n
\n
The easy solution here would be to get a USB Thinkpad keyboard and disassemble it, but its costy and not sure about the quality and compact laptop size.\n
\n
Keyboard 1 to Keyboard 2\n
------------------------\n
\n
So I imagine it pretty badly, two proprietary connectors talking gibberish and very differently, and you need to solder two random ebay parts together and hope it doesnt need translation.\n
\n
I imagine you could remove the need for the arduino, as it doesnt need USB.\n
\n
Maybe the OS could handle the keyboard layout changes?\n
\n
Is this possible? I imagine getting a T495 keyboard and putting it in my NV41MZ, needs some cutting but should work?

+url: null
+body: """
Do InvisibleFence brand controller units work with non-InvisibleFence brand collars?\n
\n
I have an InvisibleFence brand controller unit, and would like to get a collar for it. The InvisibleFence brand stuff requires their techs come out to your house and do whatever it is that they do (at a significantly higher cost). If the controller unit works (tested and verified), will other brand collars work with it?\n
\n
Edit: Some of the other brands do work with the InvisibleFence brand underground system, as long as the collar is also designed for the same type of system (the collar should be called something like ‘receiver collar’). The issue I’m running into, though, is that I don’t like the shock collars, in general. While not as restrictive or cruel as an 8m tether, according to the vets I’ve spoken to, I still find it needlessly cruel. So, I’m working with the landlord to allow me to install an above ground fence with a dig protection system. It’s going to be very expensive, but I’m hoping I can just increase the monthly payments some to make up for it. I’ve signed a long-term agreement anyway, so I’m here for a while.

+slug: "I-need-advice-on-getting-a-cheap-notebook-for-my"
+title: "I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school."
+url: null
+body: """
She is starting an online school program next semester and we will have to buy her a notebook. She has a Chromebook from the local public school system which she will have to return at the end of the year.\n
\n
The new online school mandates that the notebook must run either Mac OS or at least Windows 7. That means no Chromebook and no Linux. They give absolutely no specs on what is needed in terms of hardware, but I’m guessing it’s not much more than web browsing, zoom and some sort of proprietary software Pearson, who is behind the school (I know they suck, but the program she’s in now is so much worse), probably makes them run.\n
\n
I really doubt she needs anything powerful. We’d like to spend less than $300. Even $200 if we could because we are down to a single income. Obviously, that means no Macbook, and I don’t think it’s worth getting one even if we can afford it.\n
\n
So here’s my question. There are a bunch of sub-$200 name brand notebooks on Amazon- no way am I buying some weird Chinese brand and I’m wary of buying used because I don’t want to chance something going bad in the middle of the semester. The notebooks on Amazon have really poor specs, like 4 GB of RAM, but maybe they will work?\n
\n
Here’s an example - [www.amazon.com/…/B09SVR5VD4?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_D_…](https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Vivobook-Processor-Microsoft-L510MA-AS02/dp/B09SVR5VD4?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_D_dd93bda7_2&th=1)\n
\n
Intel Celeron N4020 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Windows 11 Home S Mode, but claims you can switch out of S mode, which I’ll probably have to do to install whatever software they want me to install.\n
\n
Since they will accept a Win 7 notebook, I imagine that whatever they want us to run does not need a powerful machine, but will 4GB RAM be so little for Win 11 that the machine will be ridiculously slow even just running things like a web browser and Zoom? Would it be worth getting it and then installing an older version of Windows? Is that even possible these days?\n
\n
I haven’t bought a computer since 2015 and, because of the industry I worked in, it was an iMac. I also have a Macbook for the same reason. I’m not particularly interested in remaining in the Apple sphere when the ones I have need to be replaced, but I basically know nothing about Windows at this point.\n
\n
TL;DR - Online school mandates a Win machine, there are really cheap ones, but I don’t know if I should buy one.\n
\n
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks.

So, I had to reinstall windows as a dualboot, because I need some CAD tools for work. It was painful but it’s not thebaubject\n
\n
I’m running nixos with systemd-boot and I installed windows on another drive. I started to research how to add the entry on the boot list so I don’t need to go in bios to switch the boot order each time I want to change OS.\n
\n
Most of the information I find is about grub on nixos but I finally find information on how to add a manual entry. On the Arch wiki I find some information but now I have to blend all that to make it work on my laptop.\n
\n
It’s late and I’m scared to mess up my boot partition so I go to sleep to work instructions on it the next day.\n
\n
The next day I’m ready to do all that only to realized that there is already the entry for windows is already in the boot menu, it has been added automatically.\n
\n
So I spent all this time to think about how I while have to adjust my system manually only to realize that nixos already did it automatically for me.
