+slug: "I-need-advice-on-getting-a-cheap-notebook-for-my"
+title: "I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school."
+url: null
+body: """
She is starting an online school program next semester and we will have to buy her a notebook. She has a Chromebook from the local public school system which she will have to return at the end of the year.\n
\n
The new online school mandates that the notebook must run either Mac OS or at least Windows 7. That means no Chromebook and no Linux. They give absolutely no specs on what is needed in terms of hardware, but I’m guessing it’s not much more than web browsing, zoom and some sort of proprietary software Pearson, who is behind the school (I know they suck, but the program she’s in now is so much worse), probably makes them run.\n
\n
I really doubt she needs anything powerful. We’d like to spend less than $300. Even $200 if we could because we are down to a single income. Obviously, that means no Macbook, and I don’t think it’s worth getting one even if we can afford it.\n
\n
So here’s my question. There are a bunch of sub-$200 name brand notebooks on Amazon- no way am I buying some weird Chinese brand and I’m wary of buying used because I don’t want to chance something going bad in the middle of the semester. The notebooks on Amazon have really poor specs, like 4 GB of RAM, but maybe they will work?\n
\n
Here’s an example - [www.amazon.com/…/B09SVR5VD4?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_D_…](https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Vivobook-Processor-Microsoft-L510MA-AS02/dp/B09SVR5VD4?ref_=Oct_DLandingS_D_dd93bda7_2&th=1)\n
\n
Intel Celeron N4020 processor, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Windows 11 Home S Mode, but claims you can switch out of S mode, which I’ll probably have to do to install whatever software they want me to install.\n
\n
Since they will accept a Win 7 notebook, I imagine that whatever they want us to run does not need a powerful machine, but will 4GB RAM be so little for Win 11 that the machine will be ridiculously slow even just running things like a web browser and Zoom? Would it be worth getting it and then installing an older version of Windows? Is that even possible these days?\n
\n
I haven’t bought a computer since 2015 and, because of the industry I worked in, it was an iMac. I also have a Macbook for the same reason. I’m not particularly interested in remaining in the Apple sphere when the ones I have need to be replaced, but I basically know nothing about Windows at this point.\n
\n
TL;DR - Online school mandates a Win machine, there are really cheap ones, but I don’t know if I should buy one.\n
\n
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks.

I’ve got a Dell G3 3579 that’s in a dire need of a battery and a bottom panel replacement. I’ve thought of buying them off aliexpress, but I’m a bit skeptical of it… So ig my question is whether it’s OK to buy stuff like replacement laptop batteries off aliexpress.\n

E: I’ve checked, amazon does not ship to my country… I’m also technically asking if anyone knows any trusted good replacement battery manufacturers that I should look for…

Here’s a TG4 link for example: [www.tg4.ie/ga/player/catagoir/siamsaiocht/seinn/?…](https://www.tg4.ie/ga/player/catagoir/siamsaiocht/seinn/?pid=6339798682112)\n
\n
I found this guide – […videohelp.com/…/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple…](https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple-of-Doom) – that has an ‘Edit January 2023’ example for how to rip from TG4 Seinntóir/Player.\n
\n
But I get different results. When I do this step…\n
\n
> **2**. MPD - describes the media and how to get it. Developer Tools (F12 in your browser) select Network tab and enter ‘mpd’ in the filter box. Then start the video. Copy the url. It will look similar to this, BUT DO NOT USE THIS ONE, get a fresh copy. as it carries a token, which needs to be fresh each use.\n
\n
…it seems to be the mpd not of the television program, but of the 5-second video of the TG4 logo.\n
\n
I’m not sure is there still a such a singular [video file URL]. In the “Developer Tools (F12 in your browser) select Network tab” I see lots and lots of ‘segments’ with .m4f extension coming from Brightcove. My mental model is that when the tutorial was written there was one file, now TG4 have gotten more cautious and split it up into tiny one-second segments. Is this hypothesis right? Is there a way to do Step 2 in […videohelp.com/…/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple…](https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple-of-Doom) ?\n

Here’s a TG4 link for example: [www.tg4.ie/ga/player/catagoir/siamsaiocht/seinn/?…](https://www.tg4.ie/ga/player/catagoir/siamsaiocht/seinn/?pid=6339798682112)\n

But I get different results. When I do this step…\n

It will look similar to this, BUT DO NOT USE THIS ONE, get a fresh copy. as it carries a token, which needs to be fresh each use.\n

Is there a way to do Step 2 in […videohelp.com/…/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple…](https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/404994-Decryption-and-the-Temple-of-Doom) ?\n

edit: I realize there is Office web and it’s good but it has nowhere enough features. Also, do you guys think (Open, Libre, Only) office has as many features as Microsoft Excel?\n

I am taking business studies this year and you really do need excel for that. I can obviously use OnlyOffice Suite which is quite good and will get most of the jobs done, but it’s not equivalent to MS Office suite and in business you use what’s used most frequently, so yes, MS Office it is. But as much as I realize what a key role Microsoft plays in the Business, I DO NOT WANT TO PAY for it and I certainly DO NOT want to pay a subscription for it, but I want to learn it and the best way to learn is by doing it, so, I want to install MS Office Suite on Linux without actually paying for it, so how can I do it?\n
\n
Skip this rant: Every freaking thing is a subscription right now, I mean, there’s positives to that, but you feel like you own nothing. Don’t want to be a conspiracy theorist or anything, but it feels like every company took [“You will own nothing and be happy”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You'll_own_nothing_and_be_happy) to heart. Again, subscription model has it’s advantages, but I don’t want to subscribe to something I know I am going to need for the foreseeable future.

edit: I realize there is Office web and it’s good but it has nowhere enough features. Also, do you guys think (Open, Libre, Only) office has as many features as Microsoft Excel?\n
\n

This may be a stupid question, but I just got back into pirating some shows and movies and realize that many of the QxR files are much smaller than what I downloaded in the past. Is it likely that I am sacrificing a noticeable amount of quality if I replace my files with the smaller QxR ones?\n
\n
For example, I have Spirited Away from 2017 at 9.83 GB, but I see the QxR is only 6.1 GB. I also have the office from 2019 and the entire show (no bonus content) is about 442 GB, while the QxR version is only 165.7 GB. Dates are what they are dated on my hard drive, can’t speak to their actual origin, but they would’ve been from RARBG. (Edit to add: I also can’t really speak to the quality of the downloads, back then I was just grabbing whatever was available at a reasonable size, so I wasn’t deliberately seeking out high quality movies and shows - a simple 1080p in the listing was enough for me).\n
\n
I did some side by side on episodes of the Office (on my PC with headphones, nothing substantial), and I don’t notice any differences between the two.\n
\n
Thoughts on this? Are people better at ripping/compressing/whatever now that they can do so at a smaller size without sacrificing noticeable quality?

I have a simple wish, with a probably not so simple solution.\n
\n
I recently started with linux (Arch kde), I’m loving it, I quickly realized that this OS and almost all apps, are highly customizable, I’m laving that as well. My problem is the unavoidable reinstalls and that I have a laptop.\n
\n
Is there any way that I can save all my configs, apps and my apps’ configs, and transfer them over to my laptop, while almost having a very quick back-up. I realize that I could turn it into an ISO somehow, but that wouldn’t work (I think) because my laptop has vastly different hardware. I also realize the partitioning problem. So in my idealistic world, there should be a solution that requires a clean install (from scripts or manual) and some .sh file, that installs all my apps, pastes all my configs and reboots.\n
\n
So is this possible? and if yes, how should I go about this? did someone make a tool for this already? Or(!) can I burn it to a flash and the drivers will correct themselves/I’ll deal with them later?\n
\n
For final words I’d like to say that I’m far from finished configurating, but I’d like to know the proccess, to not shoot myself in the foot somewhere along the way of configing, thanks!
