If you think for a moment the Overlords cannot prepare a dossier on you within minutes that would make your mother faint and your father die of shame, you’re living in fantasy land. You have no idea how much data they store on individuals, and not just credit card purchases: tracking data, telephone conversations, text messages, anything you ever posted on the Internet. It’s a devouring machine. Get in their way, and you will find out how much they know about you. It has been this way for a very long time. This is nothing new. And yes, they really can turn on your cell phone camera and microphone at will without lights, so long as the battery is attached. And VPN? I laugh when I think about VPN. There is no cryptographic protocol used on the Internet, that the Overlords who brought all these technologies out in the first place, cannot decipher. None. [If we’re reviving everything then start with Mythbusters](https://lemmy.ca/post/11374607)\n
\n
What are some modern channels that do similar stuff? If episodes area available, what are older shows that might work?\n
\n
Some more general examples that come to mind:\n
\n
- [SloMoGuys](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUK0HBIBWgM2c4vsPhkYY4w) - mostly seeing things in slow motion to see how it works\n
- [How Ridiculous](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5f5IV0Bf79YLp_p9nfInRA) - For a younger audience, but it fits\n
- [Mark Rober](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY1kMZp36IQSyNx_9h4mpCg) - Engineered stuff\n
\n
Not quite related, but maybe:\n
\n
- [How it’s made](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNAUoDS2SihRhVl-dyqj2yA)\n
- [XKCD’s What If Channel](https://www.youtube.com/@xkcd_whatif)

Hello!\n
\n
This question is not about backing up your data; like git, photos & videos etc.\n
\n
I have a Lemmy server running Linux Mint and I wonder if there could be a way to backup like the OS data (and installed packages) so when the mobo fries (for example) I can just back it up into a spare server (installing Mint)?\n
\n
Obviously the premise is that I can backup that important stuff correctly.\n
\n
I’m asking because I’m a Linux noob and was confronted with the Mint backups and rollbacks. Very smooth BTW, for a virgin system anyways. Also because I hate installing and configure stuff (like Lemmy docker + nginx) and would love knowing the downtime would be minimal.\n
\n
So sort of having a hardware backup.

Hello!\n

My question is basically the title. I’m making my own Puppy Linux remaster and it already has a .PDF reader for it that is very small. I think it’s called Evince? It has a native GTK UI and starts in a second, uses very little RAM and CPU. Now I need a .EPUB reader. I’ve seen a couple different .EPUB reader apps out there for different distros, and they all the .EPUB readers seem to fall into a couple categories:\n
\n
- humongous JS monstrosity that runs inside a web browser OR packages an entire chrome copy into it with a bloated dependency hell\n
- something else that is humongous and has dependency hell but non secretly a massive web app inside a web browser under the hood.\n

So is there some third option that’s small and light and easy to install like the normal .PDF reader? I’m just asking because I honestly didn’t find one that fit the bill.

I have growing doubts of the statistical randomness of attacks in honor mode with karmic dice disabled. I’m talking about multi-attack with action surge completely whiffing when the chance to hit is 75% or greater and rogues with advantage that couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn. (1/4)^2 is 6.25% so across hundreds of rounds it’s going to happen many times, but fuck if it isn’t disheartening seeing everyone and their mother dodging like a windwalking Muhammad Ali on coke.\n

It’s not even as if it’s a soft way of making the game more difficult because while enemy chance to hit isn’t shown, my characters appear just as overpowered when it comes to dodging (usually…).\n

I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?\n
\n
I’m considering purchasing the Pine but I’d like a better screen, more RAM and a better CPU. Don’t know if I should wait for a new model to be released (are they even planning to do that? Is the company active?). I will only really use it to browse the Web, and might even look to desolder a couple of parts that I know I won’t use.\n
\n
Thanks.\n
\n
Edit: I am willing to watch content and use banking apps from the browser. Do you think it’ll be fit for me?\n
\n
---\n
\n
Edit 2: overall, I am much saddened about the state of affairs regarding private computing on the go. I desperately hope that Linux on mobile takes off, even though its incubation looks disheartening at the moment. Thank you everyone for your comments.

\n
Edit 2: overall, I am much saddened about the state of affairs regarding private computing on the go. I desperately hope that Linux on mobile takes off, even though its incubation looks disheartening at the moment. Thank you everyone for your comments.

Okay… But we can take a DNA test and get our ancestry, telling us what percentage of what races make up our overall ethnicity. So how is race a social construct and not a biological feature, when we have a scientific method to determine our race? Scratch is the bestest of the best boys. I think he got even better with the new patch. Maybe too good. I threw the vial of smokepowder to blast through a wall. Question for the group on a problem I’m trying to solve: How can I block internet access for some apps on standard, OOTB Android?\n
\n
My current set-up is to use Proton VPN with the Android settings “Always-on VPN” and “Block connections without VPN” and then use Proton VPN’s Split-tunneling to exclude certain apps from using the VPN. This has the desired effect of blocking certain apps from having access to the internet.\n
\n
However, I now find that I need to use certain Apps *without* the VPN but *with* internet access. In the past, I’d used something like NetGuard to control which apps have internet access, but, as Android only allows one VPN slot, this would require me to swap out Proton VPN.\n
\n
So my problem statement: I’d like to be able to continue to use Proton VPN, exclude *some* apps from using that VPN but still have access to the internet, and block *still other* apps from the internet entirely. I’m struggling to find a way to do this.\n
\n
Any suggestions are welcome!
