+slug: "I-remember-why-I-stopped-using-Geany-text-editor-comment"
+title: "I remember why I stopped using Geany text editor: comment toggling not as expected"
+url: null
+body: """
Since [Geany 2.0 has recently been released](https://www.geany.org/documentation/releasenotes/) I decided to switch back to it from Kate. I used to like Geany but it had some problems I couldn’t quite remember.\n
\n
So I quickly remembered the problem. I can’t figure out how to configure it to properly comment and comment blocks of code. Say you have the following in a file of type `shell script`:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;"># a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="color:#62a35c;">echo </span><span style="color:#323232;">$variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
I want to be able to select the above lines and use a keybinding to comment them out, so the result would be:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">## a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">#echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
`Edit` > `Format` > `Comment Lines` works as anticipated.\n
\n
But if I decide I want the lines back, how do that with the same keybinding? Using `Comment Lines` again adds a second level of comments, which is what I would expect (but not what I want):\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">### a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">##echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
`Edit` > `Format` > `Toggle Line Commentation` works and the file returns to the original state. But if you reselect the original lines and run it again, you get\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">#echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Which would obviously lead to unpredictable results.\n
\n
There doesn’t seem to be a way for Geany to look at the block of text and decide whether it should be *commented* or *uncommented* and act accordingly.\n
\n
Kate editor has this functionality in `Selection` > `Toggle Comment` as do other editors I’ve encountered. If there is a mix of commented and uncommented text, it will *never* remove comments. It only removes comments when the entire block has commenting, and then it removes only 1 level of comments. Perfect. Of course if you really want to force the matter, there are the more aggressive `Comment` and `Uncomment`.\n
\n
Using the Geany `Toggle Line Commentation` leads to strange results, especially if you are starting with multiple levels of comments. Is there a way to duplicate the standard comment toggle in Geany? I tried to train myself to use `Comment Line(s)` and `Uncomment Lines(s)` instead of a single command but I just made a lot of mistakes where I didn’t realize there were multiple levels of comments or whatever and things became uncommented that shouldn’t have and it created a giant mess.\n
\n
I’m not a professional IT person, just someone who enjoys text files in their spare time. I do a lot of commenting and uncommenting trying to find out how things work. I thought it was a pretty normal thing to do. There must be a way to do it right?\n
\n
I recall digging around a bunch in the Geany repo/docs and it ended up that some problem I was having was a limitation of the Scintilla lexer and there wasn’t much Geany could do about it. But I am not sure if it was this issue or something else.

\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;"># a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="color:#62a35c;">echo </span><span style="color:#323232;">$variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
I want to be able to select the above lines and use a keybinding to comment them out, so the result would be:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">## a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">#echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
`Edit` > `Format` > `Comment Lines` works as anticipated.\n
\n
But if I decide I want the lines back, how do that with the same keybinding? Using `Comment Lines` again adds a second level of comments, which is what I would expect (but not what I want):\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">### a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">##echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
`Edit` > `Format` > `Toggle Line Commentation` works and the file returns to the original state. But if you reselect the original lines and run it again, you get\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\t a comment\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\t</span><span style="font-style:italic;color:#969896;">#echo $variable\n
</span>\n
```\n

Usually I’m getting tailed on the road by huge trucks with bright lights, but today I was spared from that, so that’s kne thing to be grateful for. Fuck cars. I’m so done with driving, I haven’t been doing it for a decade yet and I’m exhausted with it."

Hello Sailors,\n

So sadly my family still insists on using Netflix(for now), and with their recent restrictions you can only have one active TV at the time, unless the TVs are in the same home. So this had me question, what happens if all TVs are put on the same tailnet(or same subnet for that sake), would that be able to “trick” the netflix system? Has anyone tried this? Or do we already know that it wouldnt work?\n

Still new to linux hope its ok to ask here. I decided to replace one of my backup drives for the first time in 5ish years with a new 2.5" HDD meant for internal use but in an enclosure (the enclosure works fine). I formatted it in ntfs via gparted and everything went as expected, I even created a large veracrypt container file. I safely removed the drive and after a few hours I re-connected it and it made the notification noise that indicates the drive was detected but it’s filesystem wasn’t mounted. It showed up in gparted, disks and lsblk (as sdb1). Searched online and learned to manually mount it in the /mnt/ directory but I didnt want to manually do that everytime. I ended up reformatting it and for good measure, connected to another port and boom it mounted once connected. Decided not to create the file container or even incorporate the drive into my backup strategy yet until I get input whether or not this is a hardware issue or software. So what do you guys think happened? Not sure what info to provide\n
\n
Edit: the filesysten and encryption software I chose is for compatibility between my devices\n
\n
Edit 2: new errors relating to my hardware started showing up when further proceeding with my plan so I’m just going to return it and try again

Tor and VPN are both transports what wrap other traffic within. If that statement is true, no transport can save the information leaking nature of the BT protocol itself.

I’ve got a (faux) leather sofa (not sure how to tell difference). Sitting on it or moving around makes the leather rub together and squeak a LOT. It wouldn’t bother me but I live in an upstairs flat so I get paranoid if it’s late at night and I move on the sofa it’s “CREEESQUEEEEEEEUUUURRRR”.\n

+url: null
+body: """
Well, it’s that time of year again, and the #1 thing people ask me for is the pecan topped sweet potatoes that I completely stole from America’s Test Kitchen.\n
\n
For a more intense molasses flavor, use dark brown sugar in place of light brown sugar.\n
\n
Serves 10 to 12\n
\n
Sweet Potatoes\n
\n
• 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch chunks\n
\n
• 5 pounds sweet potatoes (about 8 medium), peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes\n
\n
• 1 cup packed light brown sugar\n
\n
• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt\n
\n
• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper\n
\n
• 1/2 cup water\n
\n
Pecan Topping\n
\n
• 2 cups pecan halves\n
\n
• 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar\n
\n
• 1 egg white, lightly beaten\n
\n
• 1/8 teaspoon salt\n
\n
• Pinch cayenne pepper\n
\n
• Pinch ground cumin\n
\n
Directions\n
\n
1. FOR THE SWEET POTATOES: Melt the butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the sweet potatoes, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and water; bring to a simmer. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover, and cook, stirring often, until the sweet potatoes are tender (a paring knife can be slipped into and out of the center of the potatoes with very little resistance), 45 to 60 minutes.\n
2. When the sweet potatoes are tender, remove the lid and bring the sauce to a rapid simmer over medium-high heat. Continue to simmer until the sauce has reduced to a glaze, 7 to 10 minutes.\n
\n
\n
\n
3. FOR THE TOPPING: Meanwhile, mix all the ingredients for the topping together in a medium bowl; set aside.\n
4. Adjust an oven rack to the middle position and heat the oven to 450 degrees. Pour the potato mixture into a 13 by 9-inch baking dish (or a shallow casserole dish of similar size). Spread the topping over the potatoes. Bake until the pecans are toasted and crisp, 10 to 15 minutes. Serve immediately.\n
\n
Variation\n
\n
CANDIED SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE WITH TOASTED MARSHMALLOW TOPPING\n
\n
Follow the recipe for Candied Sweet Potato Casserole, substituting 4 cups mini marshmallows for the pecan topping. Bake until the marshmallows are crisp and golden, about 5 minutes.

Hi, I recently switched to Ubuntu but the file manager (Nautilus I think) is not practical at all. I would like to be able to :\n

Hi, I’m looking for a distro for my laptop. My first distro was Pop!_OS, then I switched to Fedora, then Arch for a year and 2 months ago I switched to Fedora Silverblue, because I wanted to try immutable distro that relies on containers and flatpaks to be usefull. Silverblue is great but not so much for me, its not flexible enough.\n
\n
I’m thinking of switching to Arch but maybe it’s time for something else. Maybe NixOS or Void, Gentoo probably not, I don’t have time for compiling everything. What do you recommend?\n
\n
It must support full disk encryption, secure boot with signing with YOUR OWN KEYS, systemd (because of MullvadVPN), everything else I think can work on any distro (Gnome, podman, kvm, etc.).

+url: null
+body: "Hello, I did manage to kill my cheap-ish bench supply causing it to randomly output up to like 300% the set voltage when under load which did already kill one board. Probably I didn’t actively kill it but the chinesium did its job 🤷🏻\u{200D}♂️. It was a single output supply, when needed I hooked up additional buck- or linear regulators to get additional voltages which isn’t that convenient. So I’d like to get a reliable new one with at least two, preferably three outputs. Is something like a Keysight EDU36311A worth it for daily but mainly hobby usage? I’d be okay with the price if it would be like the last supply I ever have to buy. Alternatively a Siglent SPD3303X (or the -E) it’s also a triple output supply (the third channel only has three predefined voltages tho which is kind of a downside)."

I replaced my laptop’s battery after it was swollen. I found out that services like call2recycle do not take swollen batteries since they are potentially hazardous material. How can I get rid of that damned spicy pillow? In Dallas. Thanks.\n

Thanks for the suggestion and tips guys. I have bought lipo fire resistant bags for the batteries. As stated in suggestions here, most of the places like Home Depot, Best Buy, Lowes do have a recycling program; but some of them have disclaimers regarding not accepting swollen batteries. I plan to go to Batteries and Bulbs, Best Buy asap; they look most promising.
