Not the ideal community (better for open ended questions), but I’ve been looking for a Droopy cartoon that I vaguely remember from ages ago.\n
\n
The overall premise is not too different from Tom and Jerry’s “The Royal Cat Nap”. The gist of it was that Droopy had to guard a nobleman (king?) while he was asleep. Near the end, I distinctly recall Droopy handing dynamite sticks to the villains, the scene cutting to outside the castle with the duo running in and out with ever bigger dynamites, until a really big one blows them away. The scene cuts back to the king, who wakes up and removes the corks from his ears and talks to Droopy.\n
\n
Thing is, looking at the list of Droopy cartoons, none of them seem to have a premise remotely similar to that. I’m wondering what I’m remembering wrong, whether the main character or what else.\n
\n
Solved: It was Deputy Droopy. My memory was very wrong on how it actually played out for the most part. Thanks, everyone!

Hello,\n

Longtime windoze user (because work, gaming, programming, lazybess, …) I’m switching over to Linux Mint (a slow long process that might finally end up with just a little win-box for the printer and a soft or two) on all my everyday pc:s so I’m trying to get more into the nitty gritty stuff here, and I have long time heard that the:\n

UNIX and Linux System Administration Handbook (4th Edition)\n

Is it still so? Is it still worth the money or are there better books out there?\n

Cheers!

I’ve found that when I’m logged into Youtube, the algorithm works fairly well to suggest videos that are at least somewhat related to my interests. I’m specifically curious about how the “default” algorithm works when not logged in.\n
\n
If I open a private window and look at the front page, it almost feels like the algorithm is doing its best to show me the *opposite* of what I want to see. Obviously this isn’t true, but I just don’t get how it chooses the videos it shows. As an example, I almost always get:\n
\n
- Right-wing news clips (I’m not a Republican)\n
- Sports (I don’t watch or play sports)\n
- Gaming streams (I’ve not once watched a gaming stream)\n
- Christian content (I am not a Christian)\n
- Gen-Z and Gen-Y entertainment (I’m almost 40)\n
\n
I feel like some of this is geographic. My router load-balances between two internet connections, and I can sometimes tell if it’s using my “local” connection or my satellite connection (with an endpoint in another state) based on what videos it shows. Regardless, though, the content I see isn’t really appropriate for the demographic in either location. Out of curiosity, I tried it with a VPN using an endpoint in Canada (I’m in the USA); the front page was mostly really crappy reality TV content (think stuff on TLC).\n
\n
If I was programming the algorithm, I’d want to have it show content that applies to a broad audience, but that really doesn’t seem to be the case. While I don’t intend on ever using Youtube without being logged in (and having a ton of browser plugins active to improve the experience), from a technical standpoint, I’m very curious how it chooses what to put on the front page.

Hi, i’m looking for a cheesemaking expertise\n
\n
I started making fresh cheese not a long ago, and all of them turned good\n
\n
But lately I’m trying to beat the Cheddar, and it’s not really working\n
\n
I failed my first try because of not enough weight + not small enough curd cubes + high humidity during drying (at the end the cheese got mold all over and inside without drying)\n
\n
My second try went better, although the curd was a bit spongy and hard to press\n
\n
(15cm cheese) I did 8kg 12h, 18kg 24h, and around 100kg for 12h more\n
\n
During this time I noticed that the cheese cloth started smelling weird, like alcohol/yeast, kinda buttery and woody\n
\n
Now I’m done drying, and i’m tasting the cheese, and it’s really not pleasant to eat, it’s bitter and sourl, tastes just like spoiled milk\n
\n
Should I continue and age it, or discard, or something?\n
\n
Thank you

Still, no matter what combo of switches I use, it never shows hostnames. I even tried -R (reverse DNS lookup), it still doesn’t report the hostnames. On the other hand, Advanced IP Scanner (Windows) resolves hostnames just fine. Avahi daemon is running, though that shouldn’t make a difference as far as I know. Samba is also installed and smbd and nmbd are running just fine."

Again, please tell me if there is a better way to do this.\n
\n
While testing docker, frequently I need to start/stop/rm containers. I got *real sick* of having to ls them and copy paste the container ID.\n
\n
Using this alias, I just have to remember a single part of the name of the container, and I will get the container IDs that can then be included as part of another command:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ alias dcl='_dcl(){ docker container ls -aq -f name="$1";}; _dcl'\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">$ dcl snikket\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">b3fcbc808cc9\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">1947885fbb24\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">054d67d2e8b9\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">d8fe9df5f61f\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
So now that I’m getting a list of IDs, I can easily, for example, pause all of them:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ docker container pause $( dcl snikket )\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
The containers weren’t actually running, but this shows the alias working.\n
\n
dcl obviously stands for ‘docker container ls’

Again, please tell me if there is a better way to do this.\n
\n
While testing docker, frequently I need to start/stop/rm containers. I got *real sick* of having to ls them and copy paste the container ID.\n
\n
Using this alias, I just have to remember a single part of the name of the container, and I will get the container IDs that can then be included as part of another command:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ alias dcl='_dcl(){ docker container ls -aq -f name="$1";}; _dcl'\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">d8fe9df5f61f\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
So now that I’m getting a list of IDs, I can easily, for example, pause all of them:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ docker container pause $( dcl snikket )\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Error response from daemon: container is not running\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
The containers weren’t actually running, but this shows the alias working.\n
\n

Someone tell me if there is a better way to do this, but I don’t see how.\n
\n
I needed a way to see which services I have *enabled* that I have manually stopped.\n
\n
There oddly isn’t a way to do this in one command, so I had to take the output of list-unit-files ‘enabled’, and use that to filter for ‘list-units’. The command is here:\n
\n
`alias sysstop=‘systemctl list-units --state=failed,dead,exited $( systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled --type=service | awk “/.*.service/ {print }” )’`\n
\n
So now I can remember that I need to restart mariadb and nginx at some point:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ sysstop\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> blueman-mechanism.service loaded inactive dead Bluetooth management mechanism\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> mariadb.service loaded inactive dead MariaDB 11.2.2 database server\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> NetworkManager-wait-online.service loaded active exited Network Manager Wait Online\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> nginx.service loaded inactive dead A high performance web server and a reverse proxy server\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> systemd-homed-activate.service loaded active exited Home Area Activation\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> systemd-networkd-wait-online.service loaded active exited Wait for Network to be Configured\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
My other aliases are here, in case anyone finds these helpful. I use them frequently myself.\n
\n
```\n
I’ve recently switched my primary PC to Linux (Specifically POP_OS). Overall the experience has been incredible. Far less difficult than I feared.\n
\n
One area that has been a constant annoyance is sound device management. The abilities to independently set volumes by program, and switch between sound devices easily (as opposed to going into settings every time) have eluded me. Perhaps I’m just missing something, but my assumption is that there’s a packaged solution for this. I’ve looked around and seen a few recommendations for pavucontrol, but wanted to check here and see what other people use and why. I’m open to suggestions.
+body: "I ran Manjaro Linux as my daily driver a few years ago but slowly phased it out for Windows for some reason, and I’m finally back using Linux (currently Linux Mint). I gotta say, I don’t know why I ever switched back to Windows. There’s just so much freedom Linux gives you right off the bat that Windows is just plain stubborn about. The final straw for me was a couple weeks ago when Microsoft added a Copilot (Bing AI) Shortcut to my Windows 11 taskbar. They’d already added ads to my start menu and preinstalled a bunch of garbage that should be opt-in, not opt-out, so I was just fed up with it at that point. Plus, Linux is so much more customizable. Been running Mint for about a week and a half now, and honestly, I don’t think I’ll be using Windows much anymore."
Do you have a general stance about it?\n
\n
Once every couple of months I look into the state of both projects and it’s slow but steadily progressing.\n
\n
I am mainly looking into it because of the file compression. My tests showed that I can save up to 70% in disk space for a jpg image without losing too much information for both formats, avif and jxl. It depends on the images but in general it’s astonishing and I wonder why I still save jpgs in 100% quality.\n
But, I could also just save or convert my whole library to 70% jpg compression. Any advice?
