+slug: "Best-daily-use-Tips-for-Desktop-Linux-that-make-life"
+title: "Best daily use Tips for Desktop Linux, that make life easier but are not well known?"
+url: "https://itsfoss.com/"
+body: """
There are many Distros out there, but what they all do is make useful and modern systems.\n
\n
What are your not well known hacks/tricks to make the Linux Desktop experience WAY better and modern?\n
\n
Here are mine\n
\n
Install a bigger Distro\n
-----------------------\n
\n
I dont recommend Ubuntu anymore, as they are simply doing things that are not traditional anymore. Unless they open source their snap store, and allow third party repos, its simply not a free Linux Distro.\n
\n
But its true that sticking to something “Upstream” helps a lot with stable Experience and Support.\n
\n
I recommend Fedora, and they put a lot of focus on the new, modern Atomic Variants.\n
\n
You may also stick to Opensuse, Arch or even Debian. Debian will get boring and stay partly broken. Opensuse struggles with adaption sometimes. Arch is Arch…\n
\n
Get Flatpak & Flathub\n
-------------------------\n
\n
Having an “out of the box” system helps extremely with updates, package conflicts and all. With Flatpak, you have access to nearly all Graphical Linux Applications (that are widely used and maintained).\n
\n
Its not sufficient for everything, but 70% or so of the users could totally have a 90% Flatpak/10% native packages system.\n
\n
This reduces the amount of entropy **drastically**. Entropy means chaos, the randomness that your package manager needs to fight. Every install and removal of a package makes your system diverge from the tested version upstream, and developers will often say “We cant reproduce this issue”.\n
\n
Also at the same time, Flatpaks remove the need of seperate packaging, they have official binaries (`–subsection=verified`). Thus the versions are often newer.\n
\n
Also, Flatpaks are open, and have easy containerization and permission management.\n
\n
Containerize workloads\n
----------------------\n
\n
Example: I have a Laptop that does Private, Secure and Work things.\n
\n
Best would be to have isolated containers or even Virtual Machines, if you really dont want other apps spying on something you dont like. This is luckily nearly nonexistent, even though X11 and the lack of SELinux make common Distros not actually secure.\n
\n
So if you can use VMs with graphical acceleration and have enough RAM, install a very light Desktop on there or even a Window Manager (Fedora Sway spin?).\n
\n
One step below: you can use isolated containers. Toolbox and Distrobox are not suited for that out of the box, but there are ways to isolate its directories and also remove filesystem permissions completely.\n
\n
The last but still useful step is to have Toolbox/Distrobox Containers. It doesnt isolate your filesystem at all, as its primary use case is to have app support from every Linux Distro. So you can use Ubuntu PPA, Arch AUR, Fedora COPR, Opensuse and many more Distro-specific repos.\n
\n
While thats mostly not needed, you can group your projects here, most common use case is a dev environment with loads of other dependencies, that you dont want to put on your main system.\n
\n
Stick to secure defaults\n
------------------------\n
\n
Example: Fedora and others are nearly unique at using SELinux, which is naturally on Android.\n
\n
Also, Distros being very stable with Wayland, Pipewire and other modern standards, are a good indication. Switching from Kubuntu to Fedora-KDE for example was a great step.\n
\n
Its not best to self hack all your security features. Even though MAC address randomization or secure DNS settings are not default poorly.\n
\n
Things like hardened kernel, hardened malloc, measured boot, hash authentification (Heads BIOS for example) are not common, which is pretty bad.\n
\n
Try OSTree Distros\n
------------------\n
\n
There are now great talks about different versions of Immutability.\n
\n
- Linux User Space: Happy Rebasing to everyone!\n
- Fedora Project Podcast: Silverblue and immutable Desktops\n
\n
To keep it short: Do you know how your system will look like after using it regularily, updating, installing, uninstalling, for many upgrades?\n
\n
You can be more sure by following the containerization standards, but still the system can not be resetted, and you cant simply display the changes you did to your system.\n
\n
With OSTree Distros you can reset, rebase to another system (completely different or simply with some other packages), display every change you did to it, revert the changes to your last boot, keep any image as a backup before experimenting… And all updates and installs are atomic! If something fails, you will have no update, no chance to break at all, even when using rolling git releases or something.\n
\n
Automate\n
--------\n
\n
Automate updates, this is so important and poorly not standard. This doesnt mean having to click a button on a store always. I am working on some better system, detecting networks and battery state.\n
\n
Automate backups of important directories to an external Drive.\n
\n
For example using Syncthing. Why need a server when you have all your data on two devices that you own. The chance of both breaking is not very high.\n

\n
Or use Nextcloud, maybe combine it with Cryptomator if you dont trust your Server.\n
\n
Automate command line tasks in your shell config.\n
\n
Automate app startups if they take long.\n
\n
Automate your passwords by using a password manager.\n
\n
Automate annoying cookie banner removal using UBlock Origin.\n
\n
Automate entering “sort by price” or “only in 100km range” etc in ebay, or anything else, using “Add Custom Search Engine” and a custom search string.\n

\n

TLDR: If you were building a NAS for 8 HDDs and 1 SSD today, what case would you use?\n
\n
I’m going to be rebuilding my system soon (currently using an old PowerEdge T610) using one of my other older (R5 1600) systems and I’ve basically hit a road block on picking a case.\n
\n
I’ve got 8 HDDs that need to fit in the system after it’s rebuilt (plus at least one SSD) so I’m kinda limited in that regard.\n
\n
The rest of the system is planned out (mostly because I’m reusing old parts) it’s just the case I’m stuck on.\n
\n
I’m wanting to avoid rack mounting currently mostly due to space (and wanting to keep it under $200)\n
\n
I was thinking maybe the Fractal Design Define R5, the Fractal Design Node 804, or the Phanteks Enthoo Pro 2 but I’m open to suggestions.\n
\n
EDIT: And for those that want to know why I want to move away from the PowerEdge T610, it’s primarily due to repairability. Primarily the PSU, I don’t want to have to buy used PSUs in case mine dies again.

+url: null
+body: "Pretty much what the title says. I noticed that ProtonVPN Linux has an EXTREMELY limited interface compared to their program on Windows. I also do not appear to have the option to bind qBittorrent to ProtonVPN the same way that I did with MullvadVPN. Has anybody experienced ProtonVPN on Linux and successfully used it for torrenting? It’s nowhere near as simple as on Windows, from the looks of it."

+url: null
+body: """
I tried debugging this issue for hours now but I’m out of ideas. I’m running WireGuard on my OPNsense firewall. It worked flawlessly for about a year but now I’ve gotten a really strange issue.\n
\n
Here is the Client config: ![Client](https://i.ibb.co/F4FjQNR/Screenshot-20231229-204929-Wire-Guard.png)\n
\n
As you can see, the Client got assigned the IP 10.10.10.11/32\n
\n
I can ping this IP and the Client can access all Server in the network when connected with the VPN.\n
\n
**BUT** when it connects to hosts in the LAN, it doesn’t use it’s assigned 10.10.10.11 IP but the **public IP of the OPNsense firewall** instead.\n
\n
This also doesn’t happen every time, but most of the time. I assume that it’s perhaps a ARP issue, but I don’t know why the OPNsense firewall sends its public IP (WireGuard Endpoint IP) instead of the Clients assigned IP at all.\n
\n
The IP the Client should use in the LAN (virtual VPN IP): ![virtual IP](https://i.ibb.co/yPPHZrp/Screenshot-20231229-204929-Wire-Guard.png)\n
\n
The IP which the Client actually uses (Endpoint IP): ![Endpint IP](https://i.ibb.co/Xz0JdfM/Screenshot-20231229-204929-Wire-Guard.png)\n
\n
Every help would be greatly appreciated!\n
\n
---\n
\n
EDIT: I removed and re-added the peers in OPNsense and it works again, at least for now. Maybe something broke during an update(?). I will report back if this already fixed the issue (the problem can sometimes be hard to replicate)\n
\n
EDIT 2: The issue reappeared. But I noticed, that I now have the problem only with Gecko based browsers, chromium works fine (tested on Android).\n
\n
EDIT 3: The issue only appeared with Gecko based browsers because mine are configured to use some public DOH DNS, which resolved my internal host FQDNs to public IPs, not private ones from the LAN

+title: "[solved] WireGuard VPN IP Issue"
+url: null
