I watched several sewing videos in preparation to buy a machine. The consensus is that drop-in bobbins are easier for beginners than front-load. Well I’m the kind of person who wants to get to the /expert/ stage & if that means doing things the hard way, so be it. But then the question is, what are the advantages of front-loads?\n
\n
Youtube video id `rbhfilt68vI` titled “TESTED Best Sewing Machines for Beginners” suggests that front-load bobbins are more likely to get tangled and jammed. That sounds like an anti-feature for both beginners and experienced users. So why do front-load bobbin designs even exist?\n
\n
(edit)\n
\n
I think I got my answer. Video `F7GTjrc-m5w` says front-loading enables the machine to go faster and also enables you to switch bobbins mid-task.\n
\n
I care more about jamming than speed. But the mid-task swapping sounds useful because I don’t suppose you can predict when it will run out. So I guess I need to consider how much stock to put into the comment about jamming.

Hokay, so: I’m using Connect for a long time now, and for some reason I can’t view images from certain servers, such as sh.itjust.works and programming.dev.\n

This only happens with those few specific servers, everything else works as intended. My connection is stable and fast. It might be my old as heck phone that’s the problem, but I hope someone might be able explain to me what’s causing this (and whether or not it can be fixed).\n

Title. Mainly asking for the library side, but PC cafe is also interesting to ask about.\n
\n
Mainly since Windows 11 is 64-bit only, and it seems Windows 12 is going to subscription based on top of that, neither of which public libraries can afford tossing out computers and paying more in subscription fees than they make with overdue books.\n
\n
My local library is only open for 2 days a week, due to a lack of funds for hiring more staff in the area. They use older Dell all in ones, and that just makes me think if they don’t have the money for being open 5 days a week, they don’t have the money to buy 4 new computers for the space.\n
\n
Not even getting into the bigger libraries part of that system or the ones nearby. Some have 8 computers in groups, with 4 stations of groups.\n
\n
So I was just wondering, if anyone has started or is aware of a Library/Public Computer focused linux-based OS? Perhaps one that allows immutable systems, and the library card system backed most use to enable end user access. Perhaps that’s a config file tucked away somewhere.\n
\n
And I guess the PC cafe OS is interesting, simply due to the fact that Linux gaming has been making huge strides, and PC cafes are still popular in Japan, Korea, and China.\n
\n
EDIT: I am not in control or assistance to the library, just looking if there’s a potential solution to libraries like mine. If I could give links to a library computer manager, or if I could give upstream bug reports to people making such software.

+slug: "Is-there-a-Linux-based-OS-for-public-computers-such"
+title: "Is there a Linux based OS for public computers, such as at a library or a PC cafe?"
+url: null
+body: """

I didn’t see this on any privacy guide, but with minimal work, you can have a cloud drive that’s accessible from your phone and laptop.\n
\n
Basically setup Rclone mounted => Rclone crypt => Rclone + Backblaze. Dump all your files and it works like a normal cloud drive. Android Rclone client is here [github.com/newhinton/Round-Sync/releases](https://github.com/newhinton/Round-Sync/releases)\n
\n
Round Sync let’s you setup Cronjobs so you can backup all your photos or whatever automatically. I have a job that syncs all my photos to my drive every couple days.\n

I store a lot in Backblaze and it’s <1USD/mo. I can provide details if there is interest.

[1 Up Games](1upgames.game.blog) is a new gaming blog focused on reviews and opinion pieces.\n
\n
We could post an endless barrage of news stories but there are literally hundreds of sites dedicated to gaming news and trying to compete with them all is pointless. So instead what this site will be is a place for opinion pieces like [Microsoft buys Activision. So What Happens Now?](https://1upgames.game.blog/2023/10/13/microsoft-buys-activision-so-what-happens-now/) and [The PS5 Slim is a rip-off](https://1upgames.game.blog/2023/10/10/the-new-playstation-5-slim-is-a-massive-rip-off/).\n
\n
There will also be reviews of games both old and new. Our Mini Review series will focus on older games like [Gran Turismo](https://1upgames.game.blog/2023/10/08/mini-review-gran-turismo/) while new games (and select older titles) will be treated with full length reviews like our recent [Forza Motorsport](https://1upgames.game.blog/2023/10/11/forza-motorsport-review/) review.\n
\n
So if you’re interested in games both old and new then 1 Up Games is the place for you.\n
\n
**Our plans for the future**\n
\n
The current site is a free WordPress blog however once the site starts attracting a healthy number of visits the plan is to move to a paid for hosting plan and a massively upgraded site. It’s at this point (if it happens) that you will see more regular news stories on the site and maybe even a social media presence outside of Lemmy.\n
\n
**Can you help?**\n
\n
This is my first real writing project. I enjoy writing and I especially enjoy writing about games.\n
\n
However I am not an experienced writer which I’m sure you’ve already noticed. So I’m asking for your help. If you have any feedback, pointers, criticisms or anything else about the blog or the actual writing then please let me know either in the comments or sending me a message or leaving a comment of the article in question.\n
