like you know you’re a good person at heart but life circumstances and trauma and bullying and etc prevented you from learning the proper social skills to find companionship. not necessarily a forum to actually find friends (i find going into things with that intention feels fake and weird), but rather a forum to commiserate and share advice and coping mechanisms and so on.\n

Hi, I’m working on modlog display for the Voyager client and I have a quick question regarding mod log item views, specifically, the `ModBanView` ([join-lemmy.org/api/interfaces/ModBanView.html](https://join-lemmy.org/api/interfaces/ModBanView.html)).\n
\n
If instance bans require admin rights, why is the person issuing the ban called “moderator” here?\n
\n
Same goes for some other items like `ModAddView` and `ModAddCommunityView`. Meanwhile, `ModHideCommunity` view uses “admin” instead.\n

Unfortunately, there is no explanation in the API docs to help explain this apparent inconsistency. Can anyone help shed some light on this?

Hello everyone. I just tried to create an account with linode and got the automated cancellation email due to fraud, which left a bad taste in my mouth about the company before I even had the chance to get started.\n
\n
So I am looking for alternatives that won’t break the bank, have linux options, and are fairly easy to use once you get up and running. I dont need to do anything complex, just host my small hobby projects that I’m hacking away at. I don’t have anything ready now, but I thought that with new years and all that it might be a good time to snag some deals.\n
\n
Do you guys know of anything that fits? Thanks!\n
\n
Edit: Decided to go with Oracle’s Always Free option, as at this time being a student (i.e. poor) and just wanting to mess around and learn I can’t justify going with a non-free option when a free on is available. I am however stuck on the part where I need to create my instance. I’m getting the out of capacity error, which after reading up on means there aren’t available resources for my selected region. I can either try again daily to see if at some point they will be available or select a different region (which as far as I can tell means closing and reopening the account which I want to avoid).

My boyfriend knows absolutely nothing about the series other than that Natalie Portman is in the prequels. He wants to watch the prequels first - he likes her and is convinced you’re supposed to watch them in order.\n

I’m advocating Machete order (with pre-Special Edition VHS rips), but he really wants to watch Phantom Menace and I’m not sure where to put Rogue One/what other non-mainline material to include.\n
\n
Do normies tend to like the sequels? I’ve told him upfront that I dislike them immensely, but I’ll tolerate them for him.\n

This may come across as ridiculous but please understand - I’m just trying to maximize my chance of a couples Han/Chewie Halloween costume this year.

Do normies tend to like the sequels? I’ve told him upfront that I dislike them immensely, but I’ll tolerate them for him.\n

This may come across as ridiculous but please understand - I’m just trying to maximize my chance of a couples Han/Chewie Halloween costume this year.

Hey everyone!\n
\n
As described in the title, I have a Surface Go 1 happily running Fedora 39. The only downsides are that the cameras aren’t working and that my mouse (Modern Mobile from Microsoft) sometimes doesn’t connect or disconnects.\n
\n
I don’t really care about the cameras, as I can use my phone for anything requiring it, but I get really irritated when my Surface Modern mouse doesn’t connect for a 30 seconds when I launch the OS and then connects after moving it a few times unsuccesfuly. Also, sometime without any reason or sometimes after 5 minutes of inactivity, it disconnects.\n
\n
I’ve used the same mouse on my wife’s MacBook Pro running Fedora and I don’t remember having these problems.\n
\n
I was looking at installing the Surface Kernel but I’m not so experienced I would be scared to damage my installation. I have a Clonezilla backup just in case but I’d want to avoid the useless hassle.\n
\n
Has anyone experienced that issue and do you think the Surface Kernel could help?

I only download 1080p unless it’s something like LOTR that I’ll splurge on space for. A comedy doesn’t need spectacular visual fidelity.\n
\n
Just downloaded a 44gb file for a 1080p version of Forest Gump, and I’m just kinda not interested in filling my hard drives with excessive file sizes. Noticed that some other films are 20gb and 13gb, etc, still way too big for what they are.\n
\n
Any way to maybe have radarr have a file size preference? Like, for 1080p I don’t need it to be any bigger than 3gb, and most movies can be 1.5gb and be fine\n
\n
Edit: I have to say, I asked a beginner/basic question and no one here has tried to belittle me, or come at me with hostility, I’ve only gotten helpful advice. Thank you all!

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you.\n
\n
Now, your ISP provides your router, which runs *their* firmware, which (in my case) doesn’t even have the option to enable port forwarding.\n
\n
It gets worse - because ISPs are choosing NATs over IPv6, so even if you install a custom firmware on your router without it getting blacklisted by your ISP, you still can’t expose your server to the internet because the NAT refuses to forward traffic your way. They even devise special NAT schemes like symmetric NAT to thwart hole punching.\n
\n
Basically this all means that I *have* to purchase my web hosting separately. Or relay all the traffic through an unnecessary third party, introducing a point of failure.\n
\n
It’s frustrating.\n
\n
I like to control my stuff. I don’t like to depend on other people or be in a position where I have to trust someone not to fuck with my shit. Like, if the only thing outside my apartment that mattered to my website was a DNS record, I’d be really happy with that.\n
\n
Edit: TIL ISPs in the US don’t have NATs\n
\n
Edit 2: OMG so much advice. My knowledge about computers is SO clearly outdated, I have a lot of things to read up on.\n
\n
Edit 3: There’s definitely a CGNAT involved since the WAN ip in the router config is not the same as the one I get when I use a website that echos my IP address. Far as I can tell my devices don’t get unique IPv6 addresses either. (funnily enough, if I check my IP address on my phone using roaming data, there’s no IPv6 address at all). It’s a router/modem combo, at least I think since there’s only one device in my apartment (maybe there’s a modem managing the whole complex or something?). And it doesn’t have a bridge mode, except for OTT. Might try plugging my own router into it, but it feels like a waste of time and money from what I’m seeing. Probably best to just host services over a VPN or smth.\n
\n
Edit 4: Devices do get unique IPv6 addresses, but it’s moot since I can’t do anything but ping them. I guess it wouldn’t be port forwarding but something else that I would have to do that my router doesn’t support
