      I’m a french maths/physics student (french prépa for those who know it) but also have english classes. Our tests consist most of the time in summing up an article from a newspaper. It is often very cliché, but nothing wrong there (I don’t mind talking about climate change, wars, AI or US issues for 20 minutes). Anyway, I usually don’t have any complaints towards the articles, they’re accurate and to the point, backed by experts interviews.\n

      BUT when I find while reading that the article is misleading or straight up false, I then check and it is from The Economist EVERY SINGLE TIME. I mean today was easily the 6th time this happens. Yeah sure, the bound to happen hypersonic travel will “doubtless require another step change in luggage technology beyond the wheelie-bag” (btw the Concorde failed in a oil favorable world, no way for a comeback, but I digress). And we’ll eventually have “net-zero emissions aircraft”, after all there’s “pressure from governments and environmentally aware passengers”, so now even more people can travel ! How will you ask ? They don’t say, there’s not a single argument, just affirmations of unbelievable things. But I guess it is up to the engineers to figure this out anyway. Just like going to a space hotel for ten thousands dollars a week by 2040.\n

      In the one I had to read today, they sum up one guy’s vision of the future, where we’d be enslaved by AIs that would keep mankind alive so we can help these superior “cyborgs” beings to fix climate change by geo-engineering. They’d lower the global temperature even lower because “a severe volcanic eruption” is a threat to “Gaia” (Earth’s climate balance, go figure) and to prevent this the cooler the better (I’m not making this up). “They (those cyborgs) alone can guide Gaia through the astronomical crises now imminent”. I know this is not their idea per say, but why bother covering such bullshit ?\n

      Do they even read their work, give it to a single scientist who’d be able to debunk it in seconds ? I mean if I can be 100% sure of flaws as a student on subjects I don’t master, it shouldn’t be difficult for educated writers to notice. Isn’t The Economist supposed to be a serious newspaper, or is it just totally out of touch with reality (or is it just my teacher making bad choices) ? Reading those kind of articles (to put it politely) every week is beginning to piss me off so I wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.

      I’m a french maths/physics student (french prépa for those who know it) but also have english classes. Our tests consist most of the time in summing up an article from a newspaper. It is often very cliché, but nothing wrong there (I don’t mind talking about climate change, wars, AI or US issues for 20 minutes). Anyway, I usually don’t have any complaints towards the articles, they’re accurate and to the point, backed by experts interviews.\n

      BUT when I find while reading that the article is misleading or straight up false, I then check and it is from The Economist EVERY SINGLE TIME. I mean today was easily the 6th time this happens. Yeah sure, the bound to happen hypersonic travel will “doubtless require another step change in luggage technology beyond the wheelie-bag” (btw the Concorde failed in a oil favorable world, no way for a comeback, but I digress). And we’ll eventually have “net-zero emissions aircraft”, after all there’s “pressure from governments and environmentally aware passengers”, so now even more people can travel ! How will you ask ? They don’t say, there’s not a single argument, just affirmations of unbelievable things. But I guess it is up to the engineers to figure this out anyway. Just like going to a space hotel for ten thousands dollars a week by 2040.\n

      In the one I had to read today, they sum up one guy’s vision of the future, where we’d be enslaved by AIs that would keep mankind alive so we can help these superior “cyborgs” beings to fix climate change by geo-engineering. They’d lower the global temperature even lower because “a severe volcanic eruption” is a threat to “Gaia” (Earth’s climate balance, go figure) and to prevent this the cooler the better (I’m not making this up). “They (those cyborgs) alone can guide Gaia through the astronomical crises now imminent”. I know this is not their idea per say, but why bother covering such bullshit ?\n

      Do they even read their work, give it to a single scientist who’d be able to debunk it in seconds ? I mean if I can be 100% sure of flaws as a student on subjects I don’t master, it shouldn’t be difficult for educated writers to notice. Isn’t The Economist supposed to be a serious newspaper, or is it just totally out of touch with reality (or is it just my teacher making bad choices) ? Reading those kind of articles (to put it politely) every week is beginning to piss me off so I wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.

They don’t say, there’s not a single argument, just affirmations of unbelievable things. But I guess it is up to the engineers to figure this out anyway. Just like going to a space hotel for ten thousands dollars a week by 2040.\n

      In the one I had to read today, they sum up one guy’s vision of the future, where we’d be enslaved by AIs that would keep mankind alive so we can help these superior “cyborgs” beings to fix climate change by geo-engineering. They’d lower the global temperature even lower because “a severe volcanic eruption” is a threat to “Gaia” (Earth’s climate balance, go figure) and to prevent this the cooler the better (I’m not making this up). “They (those cyborgs) alone can guide Gaia through the astronomical crises now imminent”. I know this is not their idea per say, but why bother covering such bullshit ?\n

      Do they even read their work, give it to a single scientist who’d be able to debunk it in seconds ? I mean if I can be 100% sure of flaws as a student on subjects I don’t master, it shouldn’t be difficult for educated writers to notice. Isn’t The Economist supposed to be a serious newspaper, or is it just totally out of touch with reality (or is it just my teacher making bad choices) ? Reading those kind of articles (to put it politely) every week is beginning to piss me off so I wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.
