I joined Lemmy a few weeks before the API change. I loved the conversations. I loved how the content was slower but more engaging, and less politically charged. There was nobody shitting on Elon Musk, or Twitter, or Reddit.\n
\n
People were having meaningful, engaging conversations about random stupid memes. It felt like the early days of the internet… It felt like a small community of outcasts that all got together and posted shitty memes for the sake of giving someone else a feed of shitty memes to scroll through while they were taking a shit… Or **not** taking a shit, apparently…\n
\n
But now that the Reddit API change happened… It’s like the super toxic part of Reddit was skimmed off the top and sent our way.\n
\n
Every popular post is negatively charged. Every comment has an underpinning of hate. Everything is spun with some time of agenda that feeds half truths to make it look like whole lies.\n
\n
What happened here? I thought this place was supposed to be better then Reddit? To not have some corporate overlord algorithm controlling us as part of some toxic hivemind?\n
\n
Does anybody know of a Lemmy instance that has been spared from this proto-molecule outbreak?

I joined Lemmy a few weeks before the API change. I loved the conversations. I loved how the content was slower but more engaging, and less politically charged. There was nobody shitting on Elon Musk, or Twitter, or Reddit.\n

But now that the Reddit API change happened… It’s like the super toxic part of Reddit was skimmed off the top and sent our way.\n

Every popular post is negatively charged. Every comment has an underpinning of hate. Everything is spun with some time of agenda that feeds half truths to make it look like whole lies.\n

What happened here? I thought this place was supposed to be better then Reddit? To not have some corporate overlord algorithm controlling us as part of some toxic hivemind?\n

So, I get that someone is trying to populate this community with posts using the lemmit.online bot. And that the vast majority of us are coming from Reddit. And that AITA is a staple community that we’re used to seeing in our feeds.\n

However, it seems like that just copying content into an otherwise empty community is just feeding a sterile wasteland. There is almost no engagement on the copied posts, and worse: I think it will smother any actual new content that gets posted in this wasteland of copied content. (I stand corrected, after trying to post this there I found out that only mods have priveleges to post. It’s worse than I thought, and I’ll probably just block it from my feed if it’s only a Reddit echo chamber)\n

So, yes, I am a reddit refugee. I have played around a bit in lemmy with liftoff & lemmy.world and so far it’s great.\n
\n
What I’m really curious to know is what is the best way to to find active communities & join them?\n
\n
If I wanted to find the most active Warhammer40k community, where would I start?\n
\n
If it is on a different instance, can I still (in theory) fully interact (view, upvote, comment, post) with that community by subscribing to it from my lemmy.world account in liftoff?\n
\n
If they have in some way federated/blocked lemmy.world, could I create an account directly on that instance, log into it in liftoff as an alt and swap between my accounts to have full access?\n
\n
If it is 'shadow’banned/blocked/defederated/whatever, how would I tell?\n
\n
Thank you in advance, I’ve really enjoyed trying to be active here so far and everyone has been super nice

Thanks. I am trying to get a feel of what I should do. For example, if my instance loses its data (due to a hack, sale, vulnerability, etc.), I am pretty sure all the information is lost (including my IP addresses). If other instances lose their data, or keep the data for their own purposes, then my posts/comments/related activities are lost (maybe excluding some of my profile information, my settings, and my IP addresses).\n

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
