I assume there’s some historical reason for this, but currently, the way scene releases reach most people seems to consist of:\n
\n
1. Sites that track releases post the nfo file of the release; these sites generally don’t provide the release itself.\n
2. People then look for the release via various channels and download it.\n
\n
Wouldn’t it make sense for the nfo to contain the checksum of the actual release, letting pirates verify unmodified copies of it and making it easier to avoid versions that have been modified in various ways?\n
\n
Obviously you’d still have to trust both the site where you got the NFO (and therefore the checksum) and the people who made the original release, but those are usually relatively trustworthy, being known people who have handled a lot of releases with no problems - a lot of the danger of viruses and the like in software piracy comes from the risk of middlemen adding something.

Scientists have to list all the sources they use. And they quickly get called out for doing mistakes in that regard and suffer a loss of trust in their work.\n

What would happen if everything politicians say or write had to contain sources?\n

Speeches are prepared anyway, so you have to publish all the sources of your speech right after you held it. Saying things differently than in the source would be illegal.\n

I think it would be quite interesting, and a completely different way to do politics.

I am trying to finally move from entirely depending on Google Photos to a proper backup strategy. I have my photos and videos downloaded from Google which are a mess right now but as long they’re with me I am fine, at least for now.\n

I know my way of doing things is noobish for a piracy community (and in general too, I am kinda embarrassed as well sharing this “strategy” of mine). Hence I’m asking for suggestions to improve my strategy. Yeah, in the future I will move to HDDs and NAS but for time being I am starting out this way.\n

I am trying to finally move from entirely depending on Google Photos to a proper backup strategy. I have my photos and videos downloaded from Google which are a mess right now but as long they’re with me I am fine, at least for now.\n
\n
So, what I have planned is 3 way backup with Mega Drive-Google Photos- Local storage. Local storage, I will start off with storing on a pendrive and my router has a usb port so will make use of it for time being.\n
\n
I know my way of doing things is noobish for a piracy community (and in general too, I am kinda embarrassed as well sharing this “strategy” of mine). Hence I’m asking for suggestions to improve my strategy. Yeah, in the future I will move to HDDs and NAS but for time being I am starting out this way.\n
\n
So how do you manage your personal media? Are there any noob-friendly tools/techniques you know which drastically improve my strategy?

I’ve been looking for a digital copy of Kronecker Wallis’ text, “Euclid’s Elements”, on the major sites (AA, ZL, LG, VK, IRC, Scribd, Mobilism, rutracker, Ocean of PDF, etc.) but they’ve all come up empty.\n
\n
A lot of the books I usually look for can’t be found on the major sites and while I’ve made a few (several) book requests on Z-Library, it may take *months* or *years* for those to come to fruition.\n
\n
How do you all find more obscure/niche books or newer texts? The book in question costs £200 **excluding** shipping, so buying it isn’t in my 2023-2024 budget. There are also a ton of books from the Library of Congress I’d LOVE to have uploaded eventually, but that’s easier said than done.\n
\n
Are there sites/trackers dedicated towards making digital scans of physical books (like the Internet Archive)?\n
\n
Thank you!

Hey guys! Trying to understand what developers actually do to create a yet another distro, or what are the differences between existing distros. Lets say we have ubuntu and fedora. Just wondering if there could be a way to “simulate”, lets say ubuntu on fedora. For example providing every program that should be present on ubuntu in fedora. Would it be enough to be able to run .deb packages on fedora? Im not gonna do that though, just curious about this question.\n

Hey guys! Trying to understand what developers actually do to create a yet another distro, or what are the differences between existing distros. Lets say we have ubuntu and fedora. What are the differences? Excluding DE, Installer, theme, installed packages/libs and package manager. They both are FHS compliant, both running systemd what else?\n
\n
Just wondering if there could be a way to “simulate”, lets say ubuntu on fedora. For example providing every program that should be present on ubuntu in fedora. Would it be enough to be able to run .deb packages on fedora? Im not gonna do that though, just curious about this question.\n
\n
Thank you!

You know, ZFS, ButterFS (btrfs…its actually “better” right?), and I’m sure more.\n
\n
I think I have ext4 on my home computer I installed ubuntu on 5 years ago. How does the choice of file system play a role? Is that old hat now? Surely something like ext4 has its place.\n
\n
I see a lot of talk around filesystems but Ive never found a great resource that distiguishes them at a level that assumes I dont know much. Can anyone give some insight on how file systems work and why these new filesystems, that appear to be highlights and selling points in most distros, are better than older ones?\n
\n
Edit: and since we are talking about filesystems, it might be nice to describe or mention how concepts like RAID or LUKS are related.
