Fellow Fedora Immutable users, have any of you automated your system updates to occur at shutdown? If so, do you find it makes a practical difference?\n

I’m thinking of doing the same with Tony Walker’s [silverblue-update](https://github.com/tonywalker1/silverblue-update) service.\n
\n
I shutdown most of my machines daily, and that often means getting an updated image shortly after startup the next day and being forced to reboot or nearly always remain one day behind in updates. By checking for updates again at shutdown, this *should* help ensure I’ve always got the latest daily image at boot. Thoughts?

cross-posted from: [lemmy.world/post/11003492](https://lemmy.world/post/11003492)\n
\n
> Excerpts from the [article](https://spectrum.ieee.org/end-to-end-encryption-messenger) and another [article](https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/12/meta-announces-end-end-encryption-default-messenger) by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) :\n
> \n
> While Meta won’t collect messages themselves, there is nothing stopping them from collecting metadata on those very messages.\n
> \n
> By design, Meta has access to a lot of unencrypted metadata, such as who sends messages to whom, when those messages were sent, and data about you, your account, and your social contacts. None of that will change with the introduction of default encryption.\n
> \n
> Meta has a reputation for [collecting its users’ data](https://www.wired.com/story/ways-facebook-tracks-you-limit-it/): a key part of its lucrative advertising business. In fact, last year, the company [earned](https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/22/23732461/meta-eu-privacy-fine-us-data-transfers-1-3-billion) a US $1.3 billion fine from European Union regulators for transferring EU citizens’ Facebook data to the United States.\n
> \n
> Meta’s documentation [indicates](https://messengernews.fb.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Metas-approach-to-safer-private-messaging-on-Messenger-and-Instagram-DMs-Sep-23.pdf) the company will continue to process messages’ metadata: what time a message was sent, for example, and who sent it to whom. The company says it will use metadata to help identify bad actors. Privacy advocates see this use case as evidence metadata can make a double-edged sword.\n
> \n
> “*This also demonstrates how much can be inferred from behaviors and metadata without needing access to the actual contents of messages themselves*,” says Geraghty. “So we have to ask: What could Meta be using this data for additionally? It’s likely this metadata will be used to continuously enrich user profiles for targeted advertising purposes.”

+title: "Linux Ubuntu Dual-booting horror"
+url: null
+body: """
Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated. I’ve been battling with my laptop to be able to dual-boot Ubuntu Cinnamon and Windows 10 for about four days now. I’ve probably gone down five or six different rabbit-holes of troubleshooting, GRUB command-line fun, reinstalling and updating the BIOS, trying and failing to deal with VMX and locked NVram. As of now, my system boot-loops and fails to run Windows, but paradoxically I am able to get Ubuntu running, which is what I am using now.\n
\n
I’ll try to provide as much relevant information here as I can:\n
\n
- Device: HP ZBook 17, gen 6\n
- Primary OS: Windows 10 Home\n
- Linux distro: Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10\n
- Ubuntu location: /dev/sda3\n
- `grub-install --version` = 2.12~rc1-10ubuntu4\n
- boot-repair Boot-info summary: [paste.ubuntu.com/p/rxZ3D5GtpP/](https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/rxZ3D5GtpP/)\n
- I’m more than happy to provide more information as it’s requested.\n
\n
As of now, I am unable to run Windows through the BIOS. If I run via the dedicated SSD as I normally do, it boot-loops, and if I try to go through any other drives it just tells me I need to install an OS. I am currently able to run Ubuntu, but only by going through the following process:\n
\n
1. Startup menu\n
2. Boot configuration\n
3. `Boot from EFI > Ubuntu > shimx64.efi`\n
\n
At this point, I am happy with two outcomes to this scenario:\n
\n
1. I am able to run my laptop with Windows 10 as the primary OS, with the ability to dual-boot to Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10.\n
2. Assuming option 1 is impossible/requires a Herculean amount of work to pull off from this state, I am willing to scrub Windows 10 from my laptop and move forward with Cinnamon as my daily driver, though I am rather inexperienced in it. I can learn to move forward as I need to and run a VM or WINE for any Windows-specific processes I still need to do. But I would rather keep this option as my dead man’s switch.

Hey there, not sure if this is the right place to report bugs with the app… If not, I would be grateful if someone redirected me to the correct place.\n

The only issue I have with the app since the dawn of lemmy is image flickering whenever I approach the end of the feed. As there are less and less posts left, the flickering intensifies. This applies to post images, community/user icons, URL previews etc.\n

+url: null
+body: """
Hi, I’m on Windows 10 at home and Windows 11 at work. I’m going to migrate to Linux for my next PC (might eventually do it on this one, though I’ve currently done so many tweaks that I intend to keep this for gaming for now). Our two laptops and mini-PC already run Linux Mint, but I digress… (I just don’t want anyone to think I’m totally unaware of the problems with Windows and Microsoft.)\n
\n
My uses for a webcam are:\n
\n
- Streaming with friends (sharing games and video feed, playing Jackbox games, chatting, etc.)\n
- Playing Magic the Gathering via Spelltable (so it needs to be able to be positioned facing my playmat and good enough quality to detect the cards)\n
- Video call with family and friends\n
- Occasional use for presenting professional webinars (during occasions when I have to work from home)\n
- Occasionally pre-recording work-related content that will be publicly viewable\n
- Use with OBS virtual camera\n
\n
At work, I use a Logitech camera that my employer provided me with OBS software. It’s an older model, but I’m not sure of model number or anything off the top of my head. It’s not the best, and I’d like something a bit better at home.\n
\n
At home, I was using a similar Logitech camera, but a year ago I decided to upgrade and purchased the Razer Kiyo Pro. *What a mistake!* Every time this camera gets plugged in, it prompts me to install Razer Synapse. It even puts the installer directly on my hard drive without my permission!\n
\n
I’ve saved up a bit, and I’d like to try again with a different camera, one that doesn’t push its proprietary software on me. I was considering Logitech, but iirc Logi’s newer models *also do the same thing.* Or is this wrong?\n
\n
**Either way, I’d be so grateful if someone could recommend a reasonably high quality budget camera in the ~$100 range. I *could* go up to maybe $125, but after that it would start to really hurt.**\n
\n
I’ve done a lot of searching myself, but it turns out it’s pretty hard to find a camera that doesn’t either require or constantly push its proprietary software, and apparently some people [checks notes] *like the proprietary software being shoved at them???*\n
\n
Anyway, I’d be so thankful if you could help. This community helped me so much before when I needed a modem and router to escape the clutches of my IP, so I thought maybe someone would have some advice.
