I assumed that Gboard spell checker contacted servers constantly and have it switched off for whatever good that does. I recently tried enabling it to play with other options and noticed that it works when my phone is entirely offline.\n
\n
Does anyone know if it works locally or does it just send a bunch of data out once I give it internet access again?\n
\n
Bonus question: Does anyone know of a privacy respecting spell checker for android? It looks like Florisboard can work with Hunspell through Nuspell but not on Android. Is that right?

Update 2: I have fully reinstalled and updated Linux Mint but for some reason everything looks different despite the fact that I’m using the same settings and software I was before everything broke. I suspected that the pasted title was too long, so I removed some of the text, and sure enough, I was able to create the post.\n

1. If it’s going to automatically truncate the pasted text, it should truncate the text to an acceptable length.\n

Probably obvious to anyone encountering this, and an easy workaround.\n

Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated. I’ve been battling with my laptop to be able to dual-boot Ubuntu Cinnamon and Windows 10 for about four days now. I’ve probably gone down five or six different rabbit-holes of troubleshooting, GRUB command-line fun, reinstalling and updating the BIOS, trying and failing to deal with VMX and locked NVram. As of now, my system boot-loops and fails to run Windows, but paradoxically I am able to get Ubuntu running, which is what I am using now.\n
\n
I’ll try to provide as much relevant information here as I can:\n
\n
- Device: HP ZBook 17, gen 6\n
- Primary OS: Windows 10 Home\n
- Linux distro: Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10\n
- Ubuntu location: /dev/sda3\n
- `grub-install --version` = 2.12~rc1-10ubuntu4\n
- boot-repair Boot-info summary: [paste.ubuntu.com/p/rxZ3D5GtpP/](https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/rxZ3D5GtpP/)\n
- I’m more than happy to provide more information as it’s requested.\n
\n
As of now, I am unable to run Windows through the BIOS. If I run via the dedicated SSD as I normally do, it boot-loops, and if I try to go through any other drives it just tells me I need to install an OS. I am currently able to run Ubuntu, but only by going through the following process:\n
\n
1. Startup menu\n
2. Boot configuration\n
3. `Boot from EFI > Ubuntu > shimx64.efi`\n
\n
At this point, I am happy with two outcomes to this scenario:\n
\n
1. I am able to run my laptop with Windows 10 as the primary OS, with the ability to dual-boot to Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10.\n
2. Assuming option 1 is impossible/requires a Herculean amount of work to pull off from this state, I am willing to scrub Windows 10 from my laptop and move forward with Cinnamon as my daily driver, though I am rather inexperienced in it. I can learn to move forward as I need to and run a VM or WINE for any Windows-specific processes I still need to do. But I would rather keep this option as my dead man’s switch.

TLDR: can I edit docx files on word without a subscription and if not what are some apps that can allow me to do so\n
\n
Like the title says I need the ability to edit .docx for college (sadly other file formats aren’t accepted AFAIK) and my Microsoft 365 subscription is expiring and will not be renewed thanks to you lovely people getting me on the Proton family of software and obsidian for note taking.\n
\n
However i created a .docx file today and and got a popup in word saying my Microsoft subscription is expiring soon (in march I believe) and that I would lose many feature.\n
\n
This scary message wasn’t very helpful as to what features id lose (probably a lot of them I don’t even use) but the internet has not been helpful in telling me if I can still view and edit all my docx files that I have been collecting and creating over the years and have migrated to my proton drive\n
\n
If I won’t be able to access docx files in word what are some apps that can open them from my proton drive (this is a hard requirement for me).

I’m looking for a new work laptop and I’d like to jump to Linux at the same time. I was hoping to get some input from here because I’m still undecided!\n
\n
Maybe some context first : the switch is not urgent. My current machine still works. I’d like to change it because of a few quirks and problems (for me) it has, it will find a happy owner afterwards. As for the job, I’m a dev (mostly Java and web). I need something that can run a few docker containers, multiple instances of intellij, but that’s pretty much it and it’s not a complicated requirement to fill. Also, I’m in Europe.\n
\n
I’ve been looking mostly at Tuxedo and Framework, with a preference for the later 16 inch model.\n
\n
Does anybody have experience with Linux support on the framework 16? With, for example, Fedora? Other than that, any recommendation / thing to pay attention to? I have some experience with Linux but it’s been a while since I’ve run it as a desktop os, and my knowledge has never been in depth, so any help will be greatly appreciated :)
