There’s still some subreddits I’d like to view as their communities haven’t swapped over yet. Like you guys, I obviously don’t want to support Reddit in any way shape or form. Surprisingly, they have not gutted RSS feeds yet. Simply add .rss at the end of the domain. Example\n
\n
[www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA)\n
\n
becomes:\n
\n
[www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA.rss](https://www.reddit.com/r/LocalLLaMA.rss)\n
\n
Which now works from your RSS reader, sees not ads, and can view without logging in. This also works in nsfw subreddits and apparently now “unverified” subreddits now. Depending on your RSS reader, it should also be able to grab images from posts as well. This bypass seems like an oversight for now, as this doesn’t work from the API. Remember: Reddit can still go fuck themselves.\n
\n
Another small PSA: This works for Lemmy communities as well!

Hi! There’s a baby bird in my yard. It’s about the size of my fist. It has a few short white feathers. I think they’re pin feathers. The nest is too high for me to reach; so I left it alone on the ground.\n
\n
More importantly and the reason I’m reaching out, the little thing hasn’t moved. It doesn’t move when I approach and it hasn’t moved from its spot all day. I don’t see any blood, but I also haven’t touched it because I didn’t want to distress it further. I haven’t caught the parents caring for it, but I did see adult birds in the tree.\n
\n
Is there something I should be doing here? I’m leaving it alone and keeping my cats away from the window. The area it is in is shady, but it’s so hot outside. A cup of water? Should I make it a comfy box? I’ve got an ant problem in my yard. Will they hurt it?\n
\n
Picture: \n
\n
Update: I made it a “nest” on the recommendation of google and the wildlife volunteer that called me back. It hated it and ran away in small circles. After shooing it back to its original hiding spot, I left the “nest” where it could reach it if it changed its mind and fled the scene. At least it isn’t hurt.\n
\n
Update 2: it was very chirpy this morning and I heard its parents so I chose to leave it alone. The chirping stopped this afternoon and, after a while, I went to check on it. It was dropped over and unresponsive. It was in the shade of the fence but I think the 105+ degree heat got to it. Thank you all for your input. I’m sorry I couldn’t do more… :(

Following another thread a few days ago someone’s comment is stuck in my head:\n
\n
[lemmy.world/comment/1342605](https://lemmy.world/comment/1342605)\n
\n
Quick background: I’ve spent about 20 years in technology. I’ve been an in-house dev for a traditional company. I’ve been a sales engineer for a small software company. I then went to a FAANG and spent 10+ years as a sales engineer, software engineer and engineering manager. The last year+ I’ve been on a self-funded sabbatical to try to figure out what I want to do next. I just… haven’t done a whole lot of figuring.\n
\n
I’d strongly prefer something part-time, and also strongly prefer something that’s nearly 100% remote.\n
\n
Ideas that have come to mind:\n
\n
- Software sales engineering (again)\n
- Technical Project Manager\n
- Entry level dev work\n
- Get certified to be a SalesForce administrator\n
- Something something DevOps?\n
\n
I think I’d like something where there was a queue of work to pull from and just get some shit done. Over the last 5-10 years it got exhausing having to be involved in mostly long-term planning and not get the pavlovian “oh I just closed another bug” itch scratched. Though I guess that somewhat eliminates the TPM idea?\n
\n
For any of the above, or something else, I don’t even know where to start. Are there decent temp agencies to work for who can farm you out? Do they deal with part-timers? I could probably work my network as well to try to find something.

My daughter is nine and we share custody by alternating weeks. My daughter says her back hurts now and her arm is tingling. I have a doctors appointment for her on Monday and in the meantime I am trying to remain calm.\n
\n
I confronted my ex-husband about it and all her would say was one text message where he says his new wife didn’t like how my daughter slouched at the dinner table. They aren’t doctors and there is nothing wrong with her that she needs a brace. I fucking want to kill both of them. Is there a way I can get a quick court date or see a judge because I don’t want her going back there. When we divorced it took a long time to figure out custody.\n
\n
Edit: Sorry the location is the state of Florida. I’m so mad I’m having a hard time focusing.\n

\n
Firstly I would like to thank everyone for all the support in my first post and all the supportive PM’s I received. It was really overwhelming (in a good way). A few people asked for an update so here it is.\n
\n
So a lot has happened since I first posted. I called in to work while I was trying to get all this sorted. One of my co-workers has a cousin who is a lawyer and she knew someone who was able to help me and file the paperwork. My husband played dumb in court but his visits got reduced to supervised and he was ordered to take a parenting class.\n
\n
My daughter went to physiotherapy. Eventually the court reinstated his visitation when he swore he had learned his lesson and was sorry and with his otherwise clean record the court agreed. I was against it but the court ruled against me.\n
\n
I gave my daughter her own cell phone so she could call me whenever she needed to. On her second visit it happened again. This time the brace had steel and fabric instead of wood and they took her phone too. The next night she left when they weren’t looking and went up the street to a neighbor who is a police officer. The neighbor called paramedics and her co-workers. They had to cut the brace off my daughter.\n
\n
My husband and his wife were arrested. They got out quickly but they have been charged and their infant is with CPS. My ex lost visitation and custody and I’m working on making it permanent.\n
\n
Unfortunately my daughter’s shoulder was dislocated from the brace. It set back her rehab and part of her arm is still numb and tingling. She needed surgery and is still recovering. She always played sports (especially at school) and did dance but the doctor thinks she won’t ever be able to lift her arm all the way up again.\n
\n
I hate my ex and he’ll see her again over my fucking dead body. Right now I’m focusing on my daughter while my lawyer takes care of things. That’s my update.\n
\n
**Reminder - I am not the original poster.**\n

\n
[**Update: My ex husband and his new wife made my daughter a back brace out of wood and steel and forced her to wear it (Florida)**](https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/4xbb4q/update_my_ex_husband_and_his_new_wife_made_my/) - 12 August 2016\n

What are Lemmy’s feelings about the best cloud storage options these days, if you really want to break into the 1-2TB range? I’m not there yet, probably not even halfway there, but I like the peace of mind of potentially having the space if I need it. And I think subscribing to something in the Netflix price range is maybe something I’m ready for.\n
\n
My thoughts so far:\n
\n
[pcloud](https://www.pcloud.com/cloud-storage-pricing-plans.html?period=lifetime) - Intriguing because you can pay for a “lifetime” plan of 2TB of storage. But it’s $350, which is a lot, and I don’t know that I love the interface or usability, and I don’t know if I trust them.\n
\n
[iDrive](https://www.idrive.com/pricing) - Super affordable. 5tb for “just” $80/year. It might be the best deal, but nothing about their identity suggests to me that they are “good guys.” By which I mean, I’m not sure I trust them to make long-term promises for any specific plan.\n
\n
[Mega](https://mega.io/pro) - I like its very anti-google, very encrypted attitude. Born from the ashes of megaupload, they built encryption and zero knowledge into it. I LOVE that you can connect to it through the android app Solid Explorer and therefore don’t even need the mega app if you don’t want it. I hear bad things about it though? And it’s pretty expensive at $115 per year for 2TB.\n
\n
My personal thoughts/reasoning/caveats:\n
\n
**Homebrew stuff**: I don’t *quite* trust myself to use a homebrew setup like Nextcloud or Syncthing correctly. There’s too much in terms of labor, upkeep, catastrophic single points of failure where you could lose everything. I feel like I’m 70% of the way to being smart enough to do this.\n
\n
**Avoiding the Bad Guys and the Free Stuff**: I’ve tried the free version of just about everything, from Google to Onedrive to Dropbox to Mediafire to Mega. There’s even an android app that offers 1 free terrabyte?? But I don’t want something from the bad guys where I’m going to be integrated into their closed source death drap: Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, and I don’t want a too-good-to-be-true free service where I’m the product.\n
\n
I also would prefer to avoid something from the upstarts who kinda-sorta imitate the bad guys: Dropbox, Mediafire, Box. Because I’m not sure how much I can trust any specific long term promise from them.\n
\n
**It sounds like you’re saying nothing is good enough! What exactly do you want!?** Something from good guys, not bad guys. Something like [Standardnotes](https://standardnotes.com/), but for file storage. They emphasize privacy, good governance principles and longevity of their service. Or [Linode](https://www.linode.com/support-experience/), with their independence, sense of mission, love of Linux & free software, all of which tells me they are good guys.\n
\n
Probably the correct answer is (1) here’s this magical perfect source I never thought of, or (2) I’m thinking this much about it, I should probably do Nextcloud or syncthing given all the constraints that I’m putting out there.\n
\n
Anyway, that’s my thoughts on cloud storage. What are yours?

+slug: "Best-options-for-Non-Google-cloud-storage-as-of-2022"
+title: "Best options for Non-Google cloud storage as of 2022?"
+url: null
+body: """
