We seem to have a consistent problem with folks specifically taking issue with the titles of articles. To a degree I can understand this. Headlines these days can be subject to industry pressures resulting in inflammatory and clickbaity titles (if I understand correctly most headlines are not written by the author of the article but rather by an editor). That said it tends to derail conversation about otherwise useful articles. It is worth noting, however, that here on Lemmy we can edit post titles. In most cases, the quality of the discussion is better served by providing alternative titles and asking the OP to edit their post. If the post is otherwise so egregious that it cannot be saved, you are probably best off reporting it.\n
\n
In the future posts complaining about the title of the article without regard for the content are likely to be removed under some combination of rules 4 & 5.\n
\n
EDIT: For clarification because my wording may have been a little confusing. Simply complaining about a headline is generally not allowed, but stating why the headline is problematic is allowed (and productive) if you provide an alternate post title for OP and recenter discussion on the content of the article.

Long story short, this year is my exam preparation year and due to my nature I will take extreme measures to prevent distraction and focus on studying. I will decommision my PC, stop browsing Linux & tech related websites and leave this beautiful place called Lemmy. To make things clear, I am not influenced by anyone for doing this.\n
\n
**I want to use this post as a time capsule to revisit after 10 months, so I will write my predictions and also collect everyone’s.** What do you expect to see in Linux and tech scene in 10 months from now? Here are my predictions:\n
\n
- Pop OS 24.04 will be awesome and be the go-to recommendation when it is released\n
- SteamOS for PCs will not be released yet\n
- Linux market share will be around %2-2.5 in Steam hardware survey\n
- Plasma 6 will be released around January and will be a bit buggy, but most rough edges will be smoothed by the next release in 3-4 months\n
- NVK will have performance parity with official drivers in certain configurations\n
- Wayland will gain wider adoption, even on Nvidia\n
- There will be little to no progress in compatibility with current anti-cheat blocked games\n
\n
Side note:\n
\n
- Web environment integrity will be adopted only in education industry because it is dominated by Chromebooks at least in US. It will not be adopted by streaming services because highest level of DRM is *only* available on Edge and Safari. Even if Chrome had WEI support it would be meaningless because Netflix will stream 720p / 1080p anyways. MSFT and Apple will not implement WEI in their browsers in order to preserve the end-to-end control they have currently. Banks will also not implement WEI because they may be still serving customers using legacy (Windows 7) technology or simply using Firefox.

+slug: "I-will-stop-using-Linux-PC-for-10-months-What"
+title: "I will stop using Linux / PC for 10 months. What do you think will happen in that period?"
+url: null
+body: """

Hi everyone! Recently I have gotten interested in communication protocols and have been looking for one (with little success, hence my question) which would satisfy the following requirements (in prioritized order):\n
\n
• All devices should be able to initiate communication (not your typical master slave with polling)\n
\n
• Devices should be able to address messages directly to one another without a single one permanently taking on some host/master/relay role\n
\n
• Devices should be hot-pluggable (A new device may be connected to the network or removed from it without problems even when the network is up and running)\n
\n
• The protocol should be stable and immune enough to noise so that it can be sent through wires up to at least 5 meters, ideally even up to 10-50 meters.\n
\n
• It should be simple, implementable even on low-perfomance microcontrollers.\n
\n
• It should have its maximum transfer rate in the kilobytes per second range or preferably even megabytes per second.\n
\n
I have looked at I2C, which for the most part would be fine, but as far as I understand it was not meant to be sent through a wire and it would be quite vulnerable to interference. (It also is by default a master-slave protocol, but it also has a multi-master mode, so maybe making every device a slave and a multi-master master at the same time could work?)\n
\n
The rest of the protocols I looked at were all master-slave, which, for my purpose, is unacceptable.\n
\n
That being said, I would be grateful if you could give me some pointers as to what protocol may satisfy these requirements and perhaps even on what sort of wires and signals it would require (twisted pairs? Differential signal? Shielded twisted pairs? Could plain simple wire suffice? etc.)

+title: "Communication protocol suggestion for peer-to-peer device network?"
+url: null
+body: """
Could plain simple wire suffice? etc.)

I dont agree with many things apple does at all, and I also think their password manager has flaws like revealing usernames without authentification.\n
\n
It is pretty handy though, to have a file where the entries are stored unencrypted, and if the password manager detects an entry it prompts to decrypt exactly that field, maybe with a fingerprint.\n
\n
KeepassDX needs to run in the background and be completely unlocked to even detect apps or password fields.\n
\n
Do you know any existing app that can do this?

+title: "A better explanation of Wok Hay"
+url: null
+body: """
cross-posted from: [lemmy.world/post/3203808](https://lemmy.world/post/3203808)\n
\n
> So I just watched a cooking video and Wok Hay got described as “Breath of the wok” again, and I got triggered.\n
> \n
> That is one of those lazy explanation Chinese geezers make to get you off their face and stop bothering them, and unfortunately it became canon.\n
> \n
> So here I attempt to give a better explanation based on my cultural background and firsthand experience.\n
> \n
> The word Hay in Wok Hay is the Cantonese pronunciation of the word Qi. Meaning energy, and supposedly energy flows like fluid according to Chinese metaphysics.\n
> \n
> When a dish is said to be having Wok Hay, it means that it is “charged up with energy” during its time in cooking the wok, but really this is more of a fantastical description of a more mechanical process.\n
> \n
> (Also reason why Chinese people say fried rice, fried noodles, fried anything are “heaty”, the hot Qi in the food can cause hot Qi aka Yeet Hay in your body to accumulate, causing imbalance and make you sick)\n
> \n
> There are 2 parts that makes up this perception of Wok Hay.\n
> \n
> 1. Dry radiant heat. In Malay, “bahang”. The dish is cooked to a point where it reach a temperature so high that when it is served, the mere presence of the food itself gives you that warm, tosaty feeling. And eating “fresh from the oven/fryer” hot food is always more enjoyable, think fried chicken, pizza, fritters, toast etc. The feeling is also quite different from wet heat like from hot soup and porridge.\n
> 2. Side effects of (mostly) dry, high heat cooking. Meat and carbohydrates get slightly browned getting that delicious Maillard reaction, vegetables getting heated up so fast they got cooked without losing too much moisture. And in the case of carbohydrates, having most of their surface moisture toasted off means they don’t clump, making the eating experience much more enjoyable.\n
> \n
> It also follows that you can kill Wok Hay simply by leaving the dish turn cold. It will still have that toasted taste, but without that toasty warm feeling it feels “flat”, and carbohydrates will also start absorbing moisture making it a sad, stodgy lump.\n
> \n
> To achieve Wok Hay, one must cook the food till they reach very high temperature without burning it. Woks are superior for this because it’s wide curved shape makes it easier to rapidly stir your food around preventing burning, and woks are usually thinner than skillets, meaning better heat transfer.\n
> \n
> It is not easy to achieve. Many factors can make you fail. Like overly moist ingredients, too large of a portion with underpowered burner, going too fast and burn the food with overpowered burner, overloading your wok and you can no longer stir fast enough, food sticking to wok and burn etc.\n
> \n
> Its an art.\n
> \n
> Hope this info is helpful.

I wrote a little essay a few ago about pirating games on SteamDeck, I am not sur it is allowed here. I didn’t saw any rules against. If it is feel free to pm me I will remove my post. Hope this help other with low budget.\n
\n
No need get window. You need somes tools though.\n
\n
From the stock app market (called discover) :\n
\n
- Transmission\n
- Lutris\n
- ProtonUp-QT to install ProtonGE\n
\n
From GitHub:\n
\n
- Decky (and the addon SteamGridDB)\n
\n
On desktop mode.\n
\n
I download my games as torrent from dodirepack or fitgirl with the software transmission(from stock appshop).\n
\n
Once I have a game I use Lutris(from stock appshop) to execute the installer. Install games on :Z Wich is the steals file system.\n
\n
Then I add the game to steam on desktop mode.\n
\n
I set the compatibility in the game options mode on proton or protonGE.\n
\n
And I rename the game to their steamid to be able to search for contrôler config. (Find steam game I’d on the site SteamDB)\n
\n
In game mode\n
\n
I then setup images for the games with the addon SteamGridDB installed from Decky (and addon loader for steamdeck)\n
\n
If I have trouble running game I use protonGE which I installed with ProtonUp-QT (from stock appshop)

From the stock app market (called discover) :\n

- ProtonUp-QT to install ProtonGE\n

From GitHub:\n

- Decky (and the addon SteamGridDB)\n

I download my games as torrent from dodirepack or fitgirl with the software transmission(from stock appshop).\n

Once I have a game I use Lutris(from stock appshop) to execute the installer. Install games on :Z Wich is the steals file system.\n
\n
Then I add the game to steam on desktop mode.\n

I set the compatibility in the game options mode on proton or protonGE.\n

And I rename the game to their steamid to be able to search for contrôler config. (Find steam game I’d on the site SteamDB)\n

Hi there,\n

I am in the process of migrating instances. I have been trying to add a bio and avatar to my profile, but when I press ‘Save’ at the bottom of my profile settings, I don’t see any changes on my profile page.\n

I have tried this on both instances’ profiles, and on desktop and mobile. I don’t know if this is an error or perhaps I’m overlooking a necessary step.\n

Has anybody else encountered this? Any help would be appreciated.\n

Edit (SOLVED): Changes seemed to push through when I removed the link to my old profile from my bio. Either profiles don’t support links, or I hit a character limit. Still not quite sure.

Distrobox is underappreciated as hell, no surprise that vanillaOS, and alikes are getting so popular right now.\n
\n
I have a laptop with opensuse, great, great distro, performance is awesome, very stable and resilient, running the latest KDE, for most apps, I have flatpak in user mode, so I don’t write anything in my root directory, nothing runs as sudo.\n
\n
But opensuse has a fatal flaw, it’s not arch linux, software availability is not exceptional, sometimes you miss a thing, or the software you relie on, doesn’t work, or it’s broken because it won’t support suse properly. That’s where distrobox comes in, using it you can create a container distro and have you software in there, hell, you could even make multiple containers for different uses, like a development container with vs code, and the gazillion libraries and dev packages inside without having to worry about bloating the main system, or a gaming container with lutris, wine, all it’s 32 bit libraries and dependencies without mixing them with the host system, like I do, or perhaps you can have a container with davinci resolve, or other program that still has a windows-like installer that either works, or breaks your entire system every time you try it on a new distro, possibilities and almost endless! And even better, no performance penalty!\n
\n
The coolest thing about distrobox is for sure the container-userland integration, for example, if your app inside distrobox is able to use xdg desktop portal, you can do cool stuff like screen capture, file picking, and actually having the right theming(if you have a copy of your theme under your home of course), all with the Host’s portal! Even fonts sync with the host!\n
\n
Sadly, distrobox is not flowless, you can’t really use it with things that depend on deeper system integration, for example, waydroid, which needs to have a service running as root on the kernel for it to actually work, so using it on distros like opensuse or your average independent Linux based operating system, [insert cool, or clever word]OS that you and other 6 people on the entire globe love (for some reason) remains impossible without proper support.

It was a single output supply, when needed I hooked up additional buck- or linear regulators to get additional voltages which isn’t that convenient. So I’d like to get a reliable new one with at least two, preferably three outputs. Is something like a Keysight EDU36311A worth it for daily but mainly hobby usage? I’d be okay with the price if it would be like the last supply I ever have to buy. Alternatively a Siglent SPD3303X (or the -E) it’s also a triple output supply (the third channel only has three predefined voltages tho which is kind of a downside)."

+url: null
+body: "Hello, I did manage to kill my cheap-ish bench supply causing it to randomly output up to like 300% the set voltage when under load which did already kill one board. Probably I didn’t actively kill it but the chinesium did its job 🤷🏻\u{200D}♂️.
