Hi,\n
\n
I’m looking for an instant messaging ( IM ) apps software/protocol that run on Android and computer\n
\n
and meet the following requirements :\n
\n
- Open source !\n
- [E2EE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E2EE)\n
- Messages are send in direct ! (not passing by a server)\n
- handle group\n
- Truly private ! ( That’s the tricky part )\n
\n
The closest that I’ve found is [Briar](https://briarproject.org)\n
\n
- +can work without internet ! (bluetooth, local wifi, files !)\n
- + use [TOR](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_(network))\n
- - Mutual party have to exchange key (or your can introduce someone)\n
- - sending media suck for now, poor image quality\n
- - no call or voice messaging\n
\n
I’ve been looking for alternatives:\n
\n
- [Session](https://getsession.org)\n
- Sadly it keep ALL the conversation into server !!! so it’s a no go.\n
- [speek](https://speek.network)\n
- I didn’t try it yet, any feedback ?\n
- [simplex](https://simplex.chat)\n
- it look very promising ! (didn’t tried it yet)\n
- + seem to handle multiple profile in one !\n
- + do not require that both party send an invitation ! \n
- and have also a [optional long term address](https://simplex.chat/docs/guide/making-connections.html#comparison-of-1-time-invitation-links-and-simplex-contact-addresses)\n

How to update the BIOS on a Dell laptop running Linux\n
=====================================================\n
\n
### For models not supported by [lvfs](https://fwupd.org/)\n
\n
### Completed successfully on a Dell Inspiron 3595 running Manjaro\n
\n
This fix does not require Manjaro, it should work on any distro.\n
\n
It took me a looong time to figure out how to do this for various reasons, and there are a *lot* of forum posts on the net about this exact problem. So for posterity I offer up this guide for any future googlers.\n
\n
**TLDR for advanced users:** Use Ventoy to boot the Windows 10 installer and open the command prompt in the “Repair my PC” menu to launch the Dell BIOS update executable from a second USB.\n
\n
1. Grab two USBs that are at least 8 GB in capacity.\n
2. Download the BIOS update file from the Dell support website.\n
3. Copy it to the first USB. Mine was formatted as NTFS but I don’t think it’s critical to the process.\n
4. Download [Ventoy](https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy). If you’ve never heard of this, spend a minute reading about it. It’s a cool tool.\n
5. Flash Ventoy to your **second** USB.\n
6. Acquire an .iso of Windows 10. I chose Windows 10 because Windows 7 didn’t boot on my laptop (not sure why), and Windows 11 was too heavy for the CPU. I also tried Freedos but my laptop only has UEFI boot enabled, and no legacy option, which is apparently not supported. **Note - you don’t actually need to install or activate Windows in any way** so I didn’t feel it was necessary to be too picky about how I acquired the image.\n
7. Copy the Windows 10 .iso file to your Ventoy USB.\n
8. Boot from the Ventoy USB and select Windows 10. (F12 on most Dell laptops to interrupt the boot sequence)\n
9. Click “Repair my PC” in the bottom left hand corner - DO NOT install.\n
10. Click on the “Use command prompt” option which should be in the “Troubleshoot” menu.\n
11. Insert your first USB with the Dell BIOS update file on it.\n
12. Change directory to your first USB. It automatically mounted mine as `D:`Simply type the name of the drive to change to it.\n
13. Type the name of the BIOS update file to execute. For example: `Inspiron_3595_1.5.0.exe`If you forget the name of the file, type `dir` to get a list of files in the current directory.\n
14. Watch the magic happen and don’t freak out if it reboots more than once - just let it do its thing until it’s finished.\n
15. (Optional) boot into the BIOS to confirm that the update has been successful (check the version number).\n
\n
The entire process was fairly quick, less than 5 mintes, and it automatically rebooted twice. The only indication I had that it was finished was that on the third reboot it booted back into Linux. I went back into the BIOS later to confirm that the BIOS version number matched the version number on the Dell website (in this case, 1.5.0).

How to update the BIOS on a Dell laptop running Linux\n
=====================================================\n

Heyha !\n
\n
This is probably going to be long take and it’s late here in europe… So for those who bare with me and are ready to read through my broken English, thank you.\n
\n
I’m personally concerned about how my data and my identity is used against my will while surfing the web or using/hosting services. Self-hoster and networking enthousiast, I have some entry/medium security infrastructure.\n
\n
Ranging from self-hosted adblocker, dns, router, vlans, containers, server, firewall, wireguard, VPN… you name it ! I was pretty happy to see all my traffic being encrypted through wireshark and having what I consider a solid homelab.\n
\n
Also having most undesired dns/ads blocked with adguard in firefox with custom configuration, blocking everything, and changing some about:config options:\n
\n
- privacy.resistFingerprinting\n
- privacy.trackingprotection.fingerprinting.enabled\n
- …\n
\n
I though I had some pretty harden security and safe browsing experience, but oh my I was wrong…\n
\n
**From pixel tracking, to WebRTC leaking your real ip, fonts fingreprinting, canvas fingreprinting, audio fingerprinting, android default keyboard sending samples, ssl certificate with known vulnerabilities…**\n
\n
And most of them are not even some new tracking tech… I mean even firefox 54 was aware of most of these way of fingerprinting the user, and it makes me feel firefox is just another hidden evil-corp hiding with a fancy privacy facade ! Uhhg…\n
\n
And even if you somehow randomize those fingerprint, user-agent and block most of those things, this makes you stand out of the mass and makes you even easier to track or fingerprint. Yeah something I read recently and it actually make sense… the best way to be somehow invisible is actually to blend into the mass… If you stand out, you are pretty sure to be notices and identified (if that makes sense :/)\n
\n
This really makes me depressed right now… It feels like a losing battle where my energy is just being wasted to try to have some privacy and anonimity on the web… While fighting against the new laws ringing on our doors and big tech company always having two steps ahead…\n
\n
I’m really asking myself if it really matters and if it actually make sense to use harden technology or browsers like arkenfox or the tor browser whose end node are mostly intercepted by private institutions and governemental institutions…\n
\n
I’m probably overthinking and falling into a deep hole… But the more i dig into security and privacy, the more I get the feeling that this is an already lost battle against big tech…\n

Heyha !\n

Hello!\n
\n
This question is not about backing up your data; like git, photos & videos etc.\n
\n
I have a Lemmy server running Linux Mint and I wonder if there could be a way to backup like the OS data (and installed packages) so when the mobo fries (for example) I can just back it up into a spare server (installing Mint)?\n
\n
Obviously the premise is that I can backup that important stuff correctly.\n
\n
I’m asking because I’m a Linux noob and was confronted with the Mint backups and rollbacks. Very smooth BTW, for a virgin system anyways. Also because I hate installing and configure stuff (like Lemmy docker + nginx) and would love knowing the downtime would be minimal.\n
\n
So sort of having a hardware backup.

I’m running Graphene on a Pixel 6. I lost it and someone opened it somehow and called two of my contacts to give it back.\n

I’m a bit confused how this even happened. When I got the phone back, they were going through my contacts. I checked app usage stats and they went through a banking app (not missing money), maps, signal, etc.\n

Is there a way to figure out how they even unlocked my phone?

What is the most useless app that you have seen being given as a *subscription*?\n

For me, I tried a ‘minimalist’ launcher app for Android that had a 7 day trial or something and they had a yearly subscription based model for it. I was aghast. I would literally expect the app to blow my mind and do everything one can assume to go that way. In a world, where Nova Launcher (Yes, I know it has been acquired by Branch folks but it still is a sturdy one) or Niagara exist plus many alternatives including minimalist ones on F Droid, the dev must be releasing revolutionary stuff to factor in a subscription service.\n

Second, is a controversial choice, since it’s free tier is quite good and people like it so much. But, *Pocketcasts*. I checked it’s yearly price the other day, and boy, in my country, I can subscribe to *Google Play Pass*, *YouTube Premium* and *Spotify* and still have money left before I hit the ceiling what Pocketcasts is asking for paid upgrade.\n

Also, what are your views on one time purchase vs subscriptions? Personally, I find it much easier to purchase, if it’s good enough even if it was piratable, something if it is a one time purchase rather than repetitive.

But when I share a link to something with a picture like [lemmy.world/post/9593902](https://lemmy.world/post/9593902) and someone clicks on it, they see a very small thumbnail and a title, it’s not clear that you’re supposed to click on that thumbnail to see that the picture is the main thing in the post.\n
\n
I really would like to promote Lemmy within my friends by linking to some interesting content. But I’d expect posts with pictures to work like for example on [imgur.com/gallery/YuAw0OD](https://imgur.com/gallery/YuAw0OD)\n
\n
Does someone know if it’s possible to do somehow? I have my own instance so I would be able perhaps to change some settings or something.

If I go to the app switcher (bottom left android button) thing, and reselect Lemmy, it fixes and the display returns.\n

Im on a galaxy s22+. This started happening the same time the upvotes downvote buttons started to glitch in the UI which I have also posted about.\n
\n
This issue is more annoying. When I am mid response, I’ll often leave the app to get more accurate info in what I’m trying to say. When I come back to Lemmy, it’s all black. Nothing. But my button presses are still registering.\n
\n
If I go to the app switcher (bottom left android button) thing, and reselect Lemmy, it fixes and the display returns.\n
\n
But if I react by pressing the back button, I lose my response, I lose the post I was responding to, I sometimes can’t even relocate the thread I was in easily.
