Even I didn’t think so, and I’m ok with that, I’m really sick of windows and want to convert all the pc’s but damn…stiff learning curve.\n

    Don’t get me wrong, I ran DOS back in the day, and I was not bad at it, better than your normal user at the time but by no means a power user. So I should be able to grab the concept quickly, but I am failing. Total of 12 hrs on this now and considering just putting win7 back on this pig and giving up.\n

Got samba installed, but not configured yet, only cause I ran across much more conflicting info, some said in mint its easy like windows…right click and share that shit, easy right? Even I didn’t think so, and I’m ok with that, I’m really sick of windows and want to convert all the pc’s but damn…stiff learning curve.\n

      Don’t get me wrong, I ran DOS back in the day, and I was not bad at it, better than your normal user at the time but by no means a power user. So I should be able to grab the concept quickly, but I am failing. Total of 12 hrs on this now and considering just putting win7 back on this pig and giving up.\n

      I’m kinda new to linux, however I seem to remember running a headless ububtu server years back. Also remember it took a long time to setup being my first headless server.\n

      So, to my current issues. I just installed mint on an old pc and just want to use it to run my security cams, store the files, and host my nas. Took me over 6 hours to get the raid setup properly, so much differing information on ‘how to’ for noobs like myself, but managed to get it working and moving files over to raid file now.\n

      Coming from mostly windows crap most of my life, its confusing where and how the raid is setup, and honestly I’m still not convinced I did it right, but everything I check says it is, and I’m sure it knows better than I do.\n

      Ok, now the issue, how in the ever lovin shit can I just share that stupid folder/disk to my network. 90% of the options are greyed out while looking at the properties tab, and need sudo access to change it, so whats the point in having the gui? Am I just dumb and smoked way too many doobies? Got samba installed, but not configured yet, only cause I ran across much more conflicting info, some said in mint its easy like windows…right click and share that shit, easy right? Even I didn’t think so, and I’m ok with that, I’m really sick of windows and want to convert all the pc’s but damn…stiff learning curve.\n

      Don’t get me wrong, I ran DOS back in the day, and I was not bad at it, better than your normal user at the time but by no means a power user. So I should be able to grab the concept quickly, but I am failing. Total of 12 hrs on this now and considering just putting win7 back on this pig and giving up.\n

So, after some disappointing attempts using Debian in the past, I had a new go at it 1-2 years ago and I was positively surprised: Ubuntu without the useless bloat - kind of normal because Ubuntu is based on Debian. For sure the my next PC will be using Debian: efficient, highly configurable, and quite user friendly once you understand it’s ways of configuring things."

      Hi! I’m seeking some advice and sanity check on hopping from Ubuntu to Fedora on my personal PC. I’ve been using Ubuntu LTS for almost two years now, switched from Windows and never looked back. But I cannot say I know Linux well. I use my PC for browsing, some gaming with Steam (I have AMD GPU), occasional video editing, tinkering with some self-hosted stuff that is on separate hardware.\n

      I don’t like the way Ubuntu is moving with snaps. And LTS version falls behind too much. So I decided to move to Fedora.\n

      My plan is simple:\n

      1. I will install Fedora on a fresh nvme drive. I want disk encryption, so I’m going to have LUKS over btrfs for /home, and the root will remain unencrypted.\n
      2. I will copy all files from old /home to new /home, with the exception of dot-files.\n
      3. I plan to make use of flatpaks, so I don’t think configuration for my apps is easily transferable. I’ll have to install and configure apps from scratch, unless I’ll have to use an RPM package.\n

      Does all of this make sense? Is there a way to simplify app re-configuration in my case?\n

      And as I never used Fedora extensively (booting from live image doesn’t count), are there any caveats I should be aware of?

  +body: "I second this. I have been using Ubuntu for at least 10 years by I really do not like snaps or flatpaks for that matter. So, after some disappointing attempts using Debian in the past, I had a new go at it 1-2 years ago and I was positively surprised: Ubuntu without the useless bloat - kind of normal because Ubuntu is based on Debian. For sure the my next PC will be using Debian: efficient, highly configurable, and quite user friendly once you understand it’s ways of configuring things."
