About a year ago I was having a problem with the ethernet card switching from a static IP to DHCP, and screwing up the services that depended on the IP address. It appeared to be a problem with my ISP router (BT SmartHub 2). I thought I’d fixed it, and didn’t have any trouble for a while.\n

I added a second ethernet card to split my traffic. My VPN doesn’t allow split tunneling on Linux, and I wanted some traffic to go through the VPN while some bypassed it. I changed the DNS servers on both to go through my AdGuard installation on the same machine, and some other ad blocking DNS servers.\n

To now - Last night we were having some power issues in the area, power surges and brownouts. In the time that it took me to get to my PC and log in to the media server to shut it down, it had rebooted at least three times. After my kid went to bed, I tried to log onto the server to check it. Nothing that needed the IP address would work. I tried the second IP address and that was the same. I’ve got a media server currently running Xubuntu (getting ready to be transitioned to a proper server OS before anyone asks), and I’ve been having a problem with static IP addresses.\n

About a year ago I was having a problem with the ethernet card switching from a static IP to DHCP, and screwing up the services that depended on the IP address. It appeared to be a problem with my ISP router (BT SmartHub 2). I thought I’d fixed it, and didn’t have any trouble for a while.\n

I added a second ethernet card to split my traffic. My VPN doesn’t allow split tunneling on Linux, and I wanted some traffic to go through the VPN while some bypassed it. I hadn’t set anything up for that yet, but did give the second ethernet card a static IP address. I changed the DNS servers on both to go through my AdGuard installation on the same machine, and some other ad blocking DNS servers.\n
\n
When I first installed the second ethernet card I had a few problems, but my network switch died at the same time, and replacing it appeared to cure the issues. The issues were similar to before, in that I couldn’t get a static IP to stick.\n
\n
To now - Last night we were having some power issues in the area, power surges and brownouts. In the time that it took me to get to my PC and log in to the media server to shut it down, it had rebooted at least three times. I shut everything down successfully, and after I turned everything back on this morning, the services like Plex that don’t need the IP all seemed to be working properly.\n
\n
After my kid went to bed, I tried to log onto the server to check it. Nothing that needed the IP address would work. I tried the second IP address and that was the same. I managed to log in with NoMachine and saw that there were two new ethernet connections, both set to DHCP, and they were being used instead of the previous connections. The previous connections apparently haven’t been used for the last six days.\n

I tried deleting one of the new connections to see if it would force Xubuntu to use the old ones, and it seemed to work, but deleting the second one cut off the network connections completely. After connecting a monitor and peripherals to the server, I could see an option for an Auto Connection in the network dropdown menu, and that let me connect again.\n

This is one of the very few times I even bring those feelings up, because to me as a Star Wars fan I’d rather spend the time and energy talking about what I like about the universe than endlessly commiserating with other dejected fans or getting into debates with fans who like what I don’t like.\n

There’s no wrong way to appreciate a fictional universe, but there is a wrong way to engage as a fan. That wrong way is nonstop criticism and argument while never highlighting what you like. If you’re a fan, show other people what made you a fan. It has a better chance at elevating your tastes in the group consciousness compared to just making critiques that have likely already been made to death.\n

I prefer the old EU to most of the new Disney stuff, that’s no secret, but I can still appreciate something made by Disney without betraying some imaginary tribe of the fandom I’m supposed to belong to. Even as simple as concept art that I like which ended up in a movie or show I disliked, my first reaction is always to appreciate how good the art is, and let it grab my imagination.\n

The old EU has been officially ended. That’s sad for a fan like me. However there is over 30 years of backlog in that EU and even an obsessed fan like me hasn’t seen all of it. There’s a lot of Star Wars to go through, not even counting the bright spots I find in the modern canon.\n

+body: "I’m a generalist SysAdmin. I use Linux when necessary or convenient. I find that when I need to upgrade a specific solution it’s often easier to just spin up an entirely new instance and start from scratch. Is this normal or am I doing it wrong? For instance, this morning I’m looking at a Linux VM whose only task is to run Acme.sh to update an SSL cert. I’m currently upgrading the release. When this is done I’ll need to upgrade acme.sh. I expect some kind of failure that will require several hours to troubleshoot, at which point I’ll give up and start from scratch. I’m wondering if this is my ignorance of Linux or common practice?"
