Hello all, I’ve been distro hopping a lot lately and have a long term goal of settling on one distro for the family laptops.\n

Currently it’s a smattering of linux distro’s and some M$ across all the systems in the house.\n
\n
In short the fam has had a pretty negative reaction to Gnome for all the usual reasons, so there is a kubuntu instance, Nobara, but the KDE version, Manjaro etc… I kind of want to give Fedora a stint on my laptop and noticed the [Fedora spins project](https://fedoraproject.org/spins/) and was wondering if anyone has played around with it at all?\n
\n
I spun up the KDE version in a VM alongside the default Fedora and noticed it’s running a newer kernel than the default, which is interesting…\n

Is it an equal partner in update cycles?

I’ve been using ChatGPT to help me configure this stuff, it has not been going well. The AI can’t remember what it tells me from one question to the next, so you end up in loop after loop of errors.\n
\n
I ended up deleting the caddyfile because no configuration supplied by ChatGPT worked.\n
\n
Can anyone help me get this going?\n
\n
I’d really like to understand how to safely expose the fileserver, but nothing is working.\n
\n
I already tried nextcloud, and though it looks pretty, the on-board office suite, which I want so you don’t have to download a file to view it, will not function because Collabora won’t download.\n

I do not claim to know what I am doing.\n

I dislike CLI, and Linux frustrates me to no end.\n

I’m open to any suggestions you all have.

I assumed that Gboard spell checker contacted servers constantly and have it switched off for whatever good that does. I recently tried enabling it to play with other options and noticed that it works when my phone is entirely offline.\n

Does anyone know if it works locally or does it just send a bunch of data out once I give it internet access again?\n

Bonus question: Does anyone know of a privacy respecting spell checker for android? It looks like Florisboard can work with Hunspell through Nuspell but not on Android. Is that right?

Context\n
-------\n
\n
I want to host public-facing applications on a server in my home, without compromising security. I realize containers might be one way to do this, and want to explore that route further.\n
\n
Requirements\n
------------\n
\n
I want to run applications within containers such that they\n
\n
- Must not be able to interfere with applications running on host\n
- Must not be able to interfere with other containers or applications inside them\n
- Must have no access or influence on other devices in the local network, or otherwise compromise the security of the network, but still accessible by devices via ssh.\n
\n
> Note: all of this within reason. I understand that sometimes there may be occasional vulnerabilities, like in kernel for example, that would eventually get fixed. Risks like this within reason I am willing to accept.\n
\n
What I found so far\n
-------------------\n
\n
- **Running containers in rootless mode:** in other words, running the container daemon with an unprivileged host user\n
- **Running applications in container under unprivileged users:** the container user under which the container is ran should be unprivileged\n
- **Networking:** The container’s networking must be restricted. I am still not sure how to do this and shall explore it more, but would appreciate any resources.\n
\n
Alternative solution\n
--------------------\n
\n
I have seen bubblewrap presented as an alternative, but it seems like it is not intended to be used directly in this manner, and information about using it for this is scarce.

- **Running applications in container under unprivileged users:** the container user under which the container is ran should be unprivileged\n
- **Networking:** The container’s networking must be restricted. I am still not sure how to do this and shall explore it more, but would appreciate any resources.\n

Alternative solution\n
--------------------\n
\n
I have seen bubblewrap presented as an alternative, but it seems like it is not intended to be used directly in this manner, and information about using it for this is scarce.

Cross-posted from: [beehaw.org/post/10848936](https://beehaw.org/post/10848936)\n
\n
The new law follows past efforts, such as smartphone apps for people to “learn about new socialist thought” - including a lesson on how “Grandpa Xi led us into the new era” - and for adults to read up and take quizzes on Xi’s latest theories.\n
\n
The latter was deemed a success in terms of downloads – as all 90 million Communist Party members were ordered to use it alongside many employees of state-owned enterprises.\n
\n
China has other legislation aimed at stamping out unpatriotic behavior, such as banning the desecration of national flags and insults to soldiers. And under Xi in recent years, any dissent in China – even in the form of online comments that don’t toe the party line – is enough to land people in trouble with authorities.\n
\n
But the latest law appears to hint at the introduction of penalties for acts not already punishable under existing laws, according to Ye Ruiping, senior law lecturer from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.\n
\n
For example, it states that behaviors “advocating, glorifying and denying acts of invasion, wars and massacres” and “damaging patriotic education facilities” could be subject to punishments, she said.

I currently leave my nextcloud exposed to the Internet. It runs in a VM behind an nginx reverse proxy on the VM itself, and then my OPNSense router runs nginx with WAF rules. I enforce 2fa and don’t allow sign-ups.\n
\n
My goal is protecting against ransomware and zerodays (as much as possible). I don’t do random clicking on links in emails or anything like that, but I’m not sure how people get hit with ransomware. I keep nextcloud updated (subscribed to RSS update feed) frequently and the VM updates everyday and reboots when necessary. I’m running the latest php-fpm and that just comes from repos so it gets updated too. HTTPS on the lan with certificates maintained by my router, and LE certs for the Internet side.\n

Beside hiding this thing behind a VPN (which I’m not prepared to do currently), is there anything else I’m overlooking?

What is everyone doing? SELinux? AppArmor? Something else?\n
\n
\n
Beside hiding this thing behind a VPN (which I’m not prepared to do currently), is there anything else I’m overlooking?

(I’m currently running Mint Cinnamon if anyone is curious) On Windows I was using the free version of Davinci Resolve for all of my video editing. I quickly discovered that the free version of Resolve for Linux doesn’t support H.264/H.265 so after trying every Linux video editor I could find (even Blender) I’ve settled on using Kdenlive. I’ve been having a good time getting everything dialed in and learning Kdenlive. I was able to get hardware acceleration working with my Nvidia GPU, and I really appreciated that it could natively utilize the proxy clips that my DJI Action 3 generates when recording. I’ve been reading all kinds of tips and tricks articles but most of it is just basic stuff. Anyone using Kdenlive have more advanced tips to share? Particularly anything around title generation and animation as I’ve found Kdenlive’s system to be a little clunky. Let’s talk!"
