I’m looking at picking up a used chromebook for my kid to use after installing a Linux OS on it. So I have two questions that are very related:\n

Which would be a better one to get: Lenovo S330 or Acer CB3-431. Is one going to be easier to get the OS to run on?\n

The other question is which distro is going to work the easiest? I have been running Linux exclusively for over a decade on my person computer (Fedora currently) and my phone (PinePhonePro with Debian (well, Mobian anyways)) so I’m very comfortable with Linux in general, but haven’t played with this kind of hardware before so I’m not sure what the limitations will be.

I’m looking to finally use Linux properly and I’m planning to dual boot my laptop. There’s enough storage to go around, and while I’m comfortable messing around I’d rather not have to run and buy a new device before school while fixing my current one.\n
\n
[m.youtube.com/watch?v=VaIgbTOvAd0](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VaIgbTOvAd0)\n
\n
This was the general guide I was planning to follow, just with KDE Plasma (or another KDE). I was going to keep windows the default, and boot into Linux as needed when I had time to learn and practice.\n
\n
I assume it should be the near similar process for KDE Plasma?\n
\n
I’m ok with things going wrong with the Linux install, but I’d like to keep the Windows install as safe as possible.

I was using Windows for a long time, from 95, XP, 7 and 10. Games just worked out fine, software that I needed I pirated. But I was annoyed from updates, (cannot turn off MY pc, just update and turn off option) bing, fokin bing and oh the best - F1 binded to it.\n
\n
On parent’s pc is 7 still installed lol, not gonna change soon, anyway, my old laptop(server since 2017) wasn’t working properly with win, so only option to save it was Linux. Ubuntu was my choice in few years back, That was the moment I discovered open source software (head exploding image).\n
\n
Recently i switched my main computer into PopOs, since I worked on it I was ,scared, to do it, because of some windows specific software. (I’m still able to boot into win, I kept it for some programs that I need once per year).\n
\n
But I will never go back to windows as a main. First month was little bit stressful, configuring things and getting used to new workflows, but it is just a pleasure to use. No annoying popups, no preinstalled spyware, no stress related to running unknown .exe files, no bing. I just went from small dark closed box to a nice huge green open(source) forest…\n
\n
Everything just works. If not, I still can fix it (mostly). I’ve got better with security, I understand more how things works generally. I found my peace in getting to know more how things works, not just guessing what it can do and never actually find out.\n
\n
So if there is some one that is disgusted with how windows pc works, and is still using it, just switch it for Linux. Just do it, it will bring joy into using your machine as you need to and want to.\n

I use Firefox and Firefox Mobile on the desktop and Android respectively, Chromium with Bromite patches on Android, and infrequently Brave on the desktop to get to sites that only work properly with Chromium (more and more often - another whole separate can of worms too, this…) And I always pay attention to disable [google.com](https://fuckoffgoogle.de/) and [gstatic.com](https://fuckoffgoogle.de/) in NoScript and uBlock Origin whenever possible.\n
\n
I noticed something quite striking: when I hit sites that use those hateful captchas from Google - aka “reCAPTCHA” that I know are from Google because they force me to temporarily reenable [google.com](https://fuckoffgoogle.de/) and [gstatic.com](https://fuckoffgoogle.de/) - statistically, Google quite consistently marks the captcha as passed with the green checkmark without even asking me to identify fire hydrants or bicycles once, or perhaps once but the test passes even if I purposedly don’t select certain images, and almost never serves me those especially heinous “rolling captchas” that keep coming up with more and more images to identify or not as you click on them until it apparently has annoyed you enough and lets you through.\n
\n
When I use Firefox however, the captchas never pass without at least one test, sometimes several in a row, and very often rolling captchas. And if I purposedly don’t select certain images for the sake of experimentation, the captchas keep on coming and coming and coming forever - and if I keep doing it long enough, they plain never stop and the site become impossible to access.\n
\n
Only with Firefox. Never with Chromium-based browsers.\n
\n
I’ve been experimenting with this informally for months now and it’s quite clear to me that Google has a dark pattern in place with its reCAPTCHA system to make Chrome and Chromium-based browsers the path of least resistance.\n

We seem to have a consistent problem with folks specifically taking issue with the titles of articles. To a degree I can understand this. Headlines these days can be subject to industry pressures resulting in inflammatory and clickbaity titles (if I understand correctly most headlines are not written by the author of the article but rather by an editor). That said it tends to derail conversation about otherwise useful articles. It is worth noting, however, that here on Lemmy we can edit post titles. In most cases, the quality of the discussion is better served by providing alternative titles and asking the OP to edit their post. If the post is otherwise so egregious that it cannot be saved, you are probably best off reporting it.\n
\n
In the future posts complaining about the title of the article without regard for the content are likely to be removed under some combination of rules 4 & 5.\n
\n
EDIT: For clarification because my wording may have been a little confusing. Simply complaining about a headline is generally not allowed, but stating why the headline is problematic is allowed (and productive) if you provide an alternate post title for OP and recenter discussion on the content of the article.

+title: "A better explanation of Wok Hay"
+url: null
+body: """
cross-posted from: [lemmy.world/post/3203808](https://lemmy.world/post/3203808)\n
\n
> So I just watched a cooking video and Wok Hay got described as “Breath of the wok” again, and I got triggered.\n
> \n
> That is one of those lazy explanation Chinese geezers make to get you off their face and stop bothering them, and unfortunately it became canon.\n
> \n
> So here I attempt to give a better explanation based on my cultural background and firsthand experience.\n
> \n
> The word Hay in Wok Hay is the Cantonese pronunciation of the word Qi. Meaning energy, and supposedly energy flows like fluid according to Chinese metaphysics.\n
> \n
> When a dish is said to be having Wok Hay, it means that it is “charged up with energy” during its time in cooking the wok, but really this is more of a fantastical description of a more mechanical process.\n
> \n
> (Also reason why Chinese people say fried rice, fried noodles, fried anything are “heaty”, the hot Qi in the food can cause hot Qi aka Yeet Hay in your body to accumulate, causing imbalance and make you sick)\n
> \n
> There are 2 parts that makes up this perception of Wok Hay.\n
> \n
> 1. Dry radiant heat. In Malay, “bahang”. The dish is cooked to a point where it reach a temperature so high that when it is served, the mere presence of the food itself gives you that warm, tosaty feeling. And eating “fresh from the oven/fryer” hot food is always more enjoyable, think fried chicken, pizza, fritters, toast etc. The feeling is also quite different from wet heat like from hot soup and porridge.\n
> 2. Side effects of (mostly) dry, high heat cooking. Meat and carbohydrates get slightly browned getting that delicious Maillard reaction, vegetables getting heated up so fast they got cooked without losing too much moisture. And in the case of carbohydrates, having most of their surface moisture toasted off means they don’t clump, making the eating experience much more enjoyable.\n
> \n
> It also follows that you can kill Wok Hay simply by leaving the dish turn cold. It will still have that toasted taste, but without that toasty warm feeling it feels “flat”, and carbohydrates will also start absorbing moisture making it a sad, stodgy lump.\n
> \n
> To achieve Wok Hay, one must cook the food till they reach very high temperature without burning it. Woks are superior for this because it’s wide curved shape makes it easier to rapidly stir your food around preventing burning, and woks are usually thinner than skillets, meaning better heat transfer.\n
> \n
> It is not easy to achieve. Many factors can make you fail. Like overly moist ingredients, too large of a portion with underpowered burner, going too fast and burn the food with overpowered burner, overloading your wok and you can no longer stir fast enough, food sticking to wok and burn etc.\n
> \n
> Its an art.\n
> \n
> Hope this info is helpful.
