How to update the BIOS on a Dell laptop running Linux\n
=====================================================\n
\n
### For models not supported by [lvfs](https://fwupd.org/)\n
\n
### Completed successfully on a Dell Inspiron 3595 running Manjaro\n
\n
This fix does not require Manjaro, it should work on any distro.\n
\n
It took me a looong time to figure out how to do this for various reasons, and there are a *lot* of forum posts on the net about this exact problem. So for posterity I offer up this guide for any future googlers.\n
\n
**TLDR for advanced users:** Use Ventoy to boot the Windows 10 installer and open the command prompt in the “Repair my PC” menu to launch the Dell BIOS update executable from a second USB.\n
\n
1. Grab two USBs that are at least 8 GB in capacity.\n
2. Download the BIOS update file from the Dell support website.\n
3. Copy it to the first USB. Mine was formatted as NTFS but I don’t think it’s critical to the process.\n
4. Download [Ventoy](https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy). If you’ve never heard of this, spend a minute reading about it. It’s a cool tool.\n
5. Flash Ventoy to your **second** USB.\n
6. Acquire an .iso of Windows 10. I chose Windows 10 because Windows 7 didn’t boot on my laptop (not sure why), and Windows 11 was too heavy for the CPU. I also tried Freedos but my laptop only has UEFI boot enabled, and no legacy option, which is apparently not supported. **Note - you don’t actually need to install or activate Windows in any way** so I didn’t feel it was necessary to be too picky about how I acquired the image.\n
7. Copy the Windows 10 .iso file to your Ventoy USB.\n
8. Boot from the Ventoy USB and select Windows 10. (F12 on most Dell laptops to interrupt the boot sequence)\n
9. Click “Repair my PC” in the bottom left hand corner - DO NOT install.\n
10. Click on the “Use command prompt” option which should be in the “Troubleshoot” menu.\n
11. Insert your first USB with the Dell BIOS update file on it.\n
12. Change directory to your first USB. It automatically mounted mine as `D:`Simply type the name of the drive to change to it.\n
13. Type the name of the BIOS update file to execute. For example: `Inspiron_3595_1.5.0.exe`If you forget the name of the file, type `dir` to get a list of files in the current directory.\n
14. Watch the magic happen and don’t freak out if it reboots more than once - just let it do its thing until it’s finished.\n
15. (Optional) boot into the BIOS to confirm that the update has been successful (check the version number).\n
\n
The entire process was fairly quick, less than 5 mintes, and it automatically rebooted twice. The only indication I had that it was finished was that on the third reboot it booted back into Linux. I went back into the BIOS later to confirm that the BIOS version number matched the version number on the Dell website (in this case, 1.5.0).

How to update the BIOS on a Dell laptop running Linux\n
=====================================================\n

I’ve seen it for Venezuela and Syria, but i’m sure i could find this for quite a lot of other countries. \n
We’re usually saying that it would legitimize these elections, and are asking instead that the opponents boycott them. We can continue to criticize the biases surrounding the votes instead of the votes themselves if that’s the problem. \n
Some leaders may believe that the processus of elections is biased because unjust external pressures are putting a strain on the country and strengthening the opposition ; but, despite that, some of them are still asking for international observers, which could be an occasion to seize, instead of refusing to send them yet accusing them of cheating. \n
So i wonder if i’m missing something by thinking that we don’t want to legitimate the whole process by counting the votes.\n
\n
For them it seems like it would be the same if they’re already asking, but for us it could open our societies to accusations of double standards since it could be argued that our own elections aren’t perfect. \n
In the end sanctions would stay in place so it wouldn’t be useful in any way, and doesn’t matter, i should probably delete this post but i’m leaving it in the off-chance that some find an interest in it.\n
\n
If you had the initial thought that international observers won’t prevent cheating : they would count in double the votes, with the venezuelans of their area, and have everything under their eyes from the beginning of the vote to the end of the official count, so i don’t see how cheating would be possible. \n
For now, our version is that they’re miscounting the votes, yet we’re refusing to send such observers.

+url: null
+body: """

I guess I could try and do it over a longer period or download just before the billing cycle renews so even if I go over it will reset. I would rather avoid these scenarios, the only other thing I can think of is using a cafe or library connection, that might be what I have to do. Any ideas on places to download massive amounts of data or ways to get around throttling? Thanks in advance."

I understand they are important and are what makes linux relatively secure compared to windows.\n

However, when I boot my PC, I don’t want to spend a whole minute to type my password into different promts that keep getting hidden behind other windows that are starting up. I am using Nobara KDE now, but previously when I was using Pop!_OS, none of these prompts showed up.\n
\n
Currently I have 2 prompts after logging on. One for my keychain when discord autostarts, and one for flatpak when gpu-screen-recorder launches. Interestingly, discord works just fine, with auto logon, regardless of whether the keychain prompt gets canceled or filled with the password.\n
\n
Any idea on how to get rid of them? I’d prefer if really only that startup prompt was gone, and it would still ask me for the password whenever it launches any other way.

Hi, I was wondering, is it useful to use multiple adblockers in a row?\n

I don’t mean 4 or five 5 browser extensions more like a chain of adblockers, one on every passing network point.\n

Adblock DNS -> Pi-Hole -> Linux System with hBlock -> Browser with uBlock Origin\n

I have only a 10 Mbit Internet connection, so I fear that this would slowdown pageloads to much. On the other hand there are filterlists that uBlock can use where as Pi-Hole can’t.\n

I am just getting back my sea legs, but apparently they’re pretty shaky because I can’t get my ubuntu torrent (no seriously, it is) to download. It never starts downloading and is stuck in “stalled”. I’ve tried a number of things, but even with default settings it isn’t starting. I’m using proton VPN on Linux Mint, but even with the VPN disabled it doesn’t work.\n
\n
last time I torrented was probably 15 years ago.\n
\n
EDIT: i managed to get it working. As expected it was a Qbit config issue. First issue was a port forwarding issue. second one was the interface i connected it to. Apparently the interface named something with “vpn” is *not* the correct one to bind Qbit to, its a dummy created by the VPN that doesn’t work. I had to select one named “tun0”. If i just selected the regular physical interface I had IP leaks with the VPN enabled.

English is not my first language but I’m quite confident myself. And I’m always torn between saying that I’m bilingual or just fluent.\n

A lot of the times, I think in English and sometimes even dream in English but I also have never spent a single day in an English speaking country in my life. It’s weird to know that I’m not a bilingual per se but to think like one. Just wanted to know if anyone had similar experience.

+url: null
+body: """
Hi, well to start I usually feed any cat that came to my house, and a pregnant cat start coming around 2 months ago but unlike the others cat, she remained on my yard and basically she lives here.\n
\n
At some point, when I realized that she was pregnant, I started to lock her on my house where she can give birth and be safe.\n
\n
Just some 3 days ago, she gave birth to 2 completely black kittens (she is black with white points) and one white kitten with black points. But when I was looking closely at the white kitten, I realize that he had fleas, and obviously all the kittens and the mother have, but they are too dark to watch the fleas.\n
\n
I read that an easy way to remove the fleas is bathing the kitten, but ironically I also read that if a person touches a kitten too much, the mother can stop recognizing it by its smell, and even eat it, without mentioning that they are only 3 days old, so I guess that this is not an option.\n
\n
I also read that fleas abhor the smell of chamomile tea, so I could do a bit and rub a bit over the kittens without bathing them, but I don’t know if what I mentioned in the previous point also applies.\n
\n
For the mother, I don’t think I have to worry, because I’ll buy her a pipette,\n
\n
I also want to clarify that the kittens are not infested with fleas, maybe they have 5 or 10, but they are 3 kittens that sleep one on top of the other, and I prefer to be safe rather than sorry.\n
\n
(Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask such a question, but I couldn’t find an “AskVet” alternative on Lemmy)

+title: "It's possible to bathe a newborn kitten with fleas?"
+url: null
