I have an Acer XV340CKP monitor connected via Display Port to my GPU. I also have a old LG W2253TQ that I use as a secondary display. It only has a DVI and VGA port. I have a DVI-DVI cable together with a DVI-Display Port converter to connect to my GPU, which is an Asus RX6900XT. I am running Nobara 38.\n
\n
I have observed that if I were to have my Acer monitor powered when I switch on my desktop, all the monitor buttons do not respond. None of the menu buttons, not even the power button responds. When I switch off the desktop, the monitor stays on. The only way to power it down is to unplug the power cable.\n
\n
However, if I were to only have the LG monitor powered when I switch on my desktop, all the buttons on the Acer monitor works.\n
\n
I believe everything was working previously in Nobara 37. I think this issue probably started happening in the recent month or two.\n
\n
Is this even possible, where the graphics card sends a malformed signal to the monitor and prevents the buttons from working?

Any collections like that you think I should know about?"

So my Windows work PC is connected to the company’s AD. VPN Connection is done with L2TP with PAP and a Yubikey. \n
I’d like to work from within a Linux environment if possible but need access to the files on the network drive and connect to a terminal server via VPN and RDP.\n
\n
Is there a way to set this up? My first idea was, maybe a Linux VM could be configured to share the host PC’s external network adapter so from the outside it looks like the Windows machine is connected? \n
If there’s no other way, maybe WSL can be set up with a full screen X Server running on Windows (or is running Wayland in WSL somehow possible?)\n
\n
I’m fishing for ideas here, and really just need some fitting terms to google, any help is appreciated.\n
\n
Questions about violating company policy can be disregarded at the moment. If there is a way to set it up, I’ll ask my boss before implementing it, but it’s a small shop so the need hasn’t arisen for anyone else yet. To be clear, this is **not** about circumventing restrictions on computer use, just about working in an environment I’m more productive in.

Not the ideal community (better for open ended questions), but I’ve been looking for a Droopy cartoon that I vaguely remember from ages ago.\n
\n
The overall premise is not too different from Tom and Jerry’s “The Royal Cat Nap”. The gist of it was that Droopy had to guard a nobleman (king?) while he was asleep. Near the end, I distinctly recall Droopy handing dynamite sticks to the villains, the scene cutting to outside the castle with the duo running in and out with ever bigger dynamites, until a really big one blows them away. The scene cuts back to the king, who wakes up and removes the corks from his ears and talks to Droopy.\n
\n
Thing is, looking at the list of Droopy cartoons, none of them seem to have a premise remotely similar to that. I’m wondering what I’m remembering wrong, whether the main character or what else.\n
\n
Solved: It was Deputy Droopy. My memory was very wrong on how it actually played out for the most part. Thanks, everyone!

+title: "Got my electric cooler box working again 😁"
+url: "https://images2.imgbox.com/21/88/WZnJo5ol_o.jpg"
+body: """
This decade old electric cooler box gave up the ghost around 2 years ago, with the indoor outlet plug no longer working. The independent 12v input was still operational, so I kept it with the intention of *eventually* fixing it…\n
\n
And two years later, this is the eventually 😅. The integrated 10v ~45w unit had failed short on the primary side, with a burnt out Y-capacitor and some fried zeners. I started removing bits from the board to try and find all the broken components… but ended up letting out the magic smoke in the process, oops!\n
\n
I set out looking for a new power supply, and came across a 12v 45w unit from Meanwell. It was actually smaller than the cooler’s original power supply too, meaning more internal space to use later 🤫\n
\n
Spoiler![](https://images2.imgbox.com/33/21/KOCyFNev_o.jpg)\n
\n
After searching for a distributor that was actually willing to ship it to a home address, I ordered, and boom:\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/30/b9/Kz44bQkP_o.jpg)\n
\n
It’s so tiny compared to the original.\n
\n
Next I installed an Arduino Nano to control the TEC/peltier module & fan via a cheap LED repeater. I was hoping to reuse the internal temperature sensors, but left them disconnected for now\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/9b/91/2KuktXIr_o.jpg)\n
\n
After hours writing the arduino code, I finally got it into a usable state. There were issues with brownouts rebooting the Arduino, however with the Meanwell supply in-circuit those mysteriously stopped.\n
\n
There are 3 power modes now for the module: 30W, 40W and 50W - with the first two using PWM, and the last one giving it all the beans. I wanted to PWM control the fan too, but decided against it since it sounded absolutely terrible at whatever PWM frequency the Nano is using.\n
\n
It powers on to 40W by default, which is under the 45W max rating of the PSU.\n
\n
Everything looks good so far running from the bench supply:\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/bc/75/tXk3hDZw_o.jpg)\n
\n
Now all that was left was to connect the internal supply, and the 12v vehicle input. I was actually supposed to use JST connectors for the Meanwell psu, but didn’t have anything on hand - so improvised with crimping spade terminals and friction fitting those on\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/90/35/YpnoC4SN_o.jpg)\n
\n
And the moment of truth. Up until this point I hadn’t actually checked if the replacement psu was working or not\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/ed/6a/kmJ4WqvX_o.jpg)\n
\n
Looking good! I don’t really like the LEDs though, so might do something about those in future.\n
\n
You might be wondering how exactly I change the power settings… well since the manufacturer decided it was good enough to shove all the cables in the back, I did the same with a pushbutton 🤫\n
\n
![](https://images2.imgbox.com/d8/8a/Np4X8Wjl_o.jpg)\n
\n
Glad to have the electric cooler working again though, feels nice to save large things like this from going to the landfill and extend their life a bit. Excited to hear any thoughts and feedback!

Just having a play around, this turned out to be not as clear cut as expected.\n
\n
so I created a file and entered some text, used xxd to get the hex values, and then opened the device /dev/sdb1 in wxhexeditor and tried to find my file, but it’s not finding it. Inode is 19, so it should be right at the start of the first block group, but after several minutes, no joy. (drive is ext4.)\n
\n
I thought this was going to be an easy task, just multiply the inode by the block size, open the device with wxhexeditor, and scroll to the line corresponding to the calculated byte, copy out the hex values and convert to ascii and voila, there’s the ‘hello world’… except no.\n
\n
What am I missing here? Drive isn’t encrypted, nothing silly like that.\n
\n
Ok, I managed to do it with dd:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">sudo dd if=/dev/sdb1 bs=8M skip=$((4660742*4096)) iflag=skip_bytes | head -c 4096\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">hello\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
but why can I not find it using wxhexeditor??\n
\n
EDIT:\n
\n
Duh, I didn’t click that offset needed to be multiplied by the block size.\n
\n
If I go to offset 4660742*4096=19090399232 in wxhexeditor, indeed I see the file contents:\n
\n
![](https://files.catbox.moe/6zvhx0.png)\n
\n
Final conclusion:\n
\n
After some more testing, I have concluded: you cannot easily calculate the offset using the inode. Finding files across the disk requires using the inode tables to get the offset and actual file location. So an inode does not correlate with a physical/logical sequential disk location.\n
\n
I created a new file, it received inode 21, but the offset was smaller than inode 19.\n
\n
Was that a good use of 3 hours of my life? Well… I still have no idea what’s up with the Kardashians, so… I guess?

+body: "Thought I’d ask here first, then report if it’s a bug. Haven’t used Nmap on Void before. I installed the latest version available in the repos (7.94). Still, no matter what combo of switches I use, it never shows hostnames. I even tried -R (reverse DNS lookup), it still doesn’t report the hostnames. On the other hand, Advanced IP Scanner (Windows) resolves hostnames just fine. Avahi daemon is running, though that shouldn’t make a difference as far as I know. Samba is also installed and smbd and nmbd are running just fine."
