This is my small rant against the ‘features’ that big streaming services provided vis a vis the convenience of pirating the same thing.\n
\n
I have a mobile data connection only where the carrier offers me free data for six hours post midnight. I can queue torrents on my phone(Yes, I torrent mainly on phone via *Flud* for Android) for downloading at night; then transfer the downloaded files to my laptop much later for viewing on a slightly larger screen. I couldn’t have done the same with say, Amazon Prime Video. Even if I could get these streaming services to queue at certain time, due to DRM restrictions, the content would only remain playable on phone.\n
\n
I know, my use case, is very unique and niche since most folks probably already have access to fast broadband networks. But Atleast, piracy, hasn’t let go of my hand even for such use cases. I appreciate it.\n
\n
*Also, I am not sure Amazon Prime Video even goes above 720p on Firefox for Linux due to Widevine certification thing; the last time I tried I was running into issues, hence, I stopped bothering with it.*

Hi all - I am learning about Linux and want to see if my understanding is correct on this - the list of *major parts* of any distro:\n
\n
1. the Linux Kernel\n
2. GRUB or another bootloader\n
3. one or more file systems (gotta work with files somehow, right?)\n
4. one or more Shells (the terminal - bash, zsh, etc…)\n
5. a Desktop Environment (the GUI, if included, like KDE or Gnome - does this include X11 or Wayland or are those separate from the DE?)\n
6. a bunch of Default applications and daemons (is this where systemd fits int? I know about the GNU tools, SAMBA, CUPS, etc…)\n
7. a Package Manager (apt, pacman, etc…)\n

Am I forgetting anything at this 50,000 foot level? I know there are lots of other things we can add, but what are the most important things that ALL Linux distributions include?\n

Thanks!

I’ve been daily driving Linux for 17 months now (currently on Linux Mint). I have got very comfortable with basic commands and many just works distros (such as Linux Mint, or Pop!_OS) with apt as the package manager. I’ve tried Debian as a distro to try to challenge myself, but have always ran into issues. On my PC, I could never get wifi to work, which made it difficult to install properly. I’ve used it on my daily driver laptop, but ran into some issues. I thought a more advanced distro, that is still stable, would be good overall. However, not getting new software for a long time sounds quite annoying.\n
\n
I’m wanting to challenge myself to get much better with Linux, partitioning, CLI, CLI tools, understanding the components of my system, trying tiling window managers, etc. I’ve been considering installing Arch the traditional way, on my X220, as a way to force myself to improve. Is this a good way to learn more about Linux and a Linux system in general? I always hear good things about the Arch Wiki. Is there any other tips someone can give me, to sharpen my Linux skills? I was even considering trying out Gentoo on my X220, but the compiling times sound painful. I wouldn’t daily drive Gentoo or Arch, just yet, but I would try to use them as much as possible for general use.

+title: "What are some promising solutions to solar power's lack of night time availability? Is "transoceanic power transportation" on the list?"
+url: null
+body: """
EDIT: Submarine power transportation is indeed on the list\n
==========================================================\n
\n
Not transoceanic, but there are two projects currently proposed that will – when constructed – break the current record for the “longest undersea power transmission cable” (a record currently held by the North Sea Link at 720 km, or 450 miles.)\n
\n
One of these projects is [the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xlinks_Morocco%E2%80%93UK_Power_Project) which aims to lay 3,800 km (2,400 miles) of cable and sell Morocco’s solar power to England.\n
\n
There is, as of yet, not enough cable in the world to even begin this project. The company proposing the project is building factories to produce this cable.\n
\n
The other is the [Australia-Asia Power Link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia-Asia_Power_Link), which aims to provide Australian solar power to Singapore using a 4,500 km (2,800 miles) undersea cable.\n
\n
Where the Xlinks project ran into a “not enough cable in the world” problem, Sun Cable’s AAPL has apparently been running into a “not enough money in the world” problem, as it has repeatedly gotten into trouble with its investors.\n
\n
EDIT: But also, storage is scaling up\n
=====================================\n
\n
@ProfessorGumby@midwest.social provided a fantastic link to a lot of energy storage mediums that are already in use in various grids across the world. These include (and [the link the professor provided](https://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-tech/sustainable/grid-energy-storage.htm) gives an excellent short summary on each)\n
\n
- Pumped hydroelectric\n
- Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES)\n
- Flywheels\n
- Supercapacitors\n
- And just plain batteries\n
\n
Also, this wasn’t in the Gumby’s answer, but [Finland’s Vatajankoski power plant uses a hot sand battery](https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20221102-how-a-sand-battery-could-transform-clean-energy) during its high-demand, low-production hours.\n
\n
Hydrogen is projected to grow\n
=============================\n
\n
@Hypx@kbin.social noted that hydrogen has advantages no other energy storage medium possesses: duration of storage and ease of piping/shipping. This is probably why numerous governments are investing in hydrogen production, and why [Wood Mackenzie projects](https://www.woodmac.com/news/the-edge/hydrogens-critical-role-in-the-energy-transition/) what looks like a 200-fold increase in production by the year 2050. (It’s a graph. I’m looking at a graph, so I am only estimating.)

EDIT: Submarine power transportation is indeed on the list\n
==========================================================\n
=====================================\n
=============================\n

I currently use Windows 10 and I’d like to try out Linux. My plan is to set up a dual boot with OpenSUSE tumbleweed and KDE Plasma. I’ve read so many different opinions about choosing a distro, compatibility with gaming and Nvidia drivers, and personal issues with the ethos of different companies like Canonical. I value privacy and I’d rather avoid a Linux distro that’s implementing something like ads or telemetry…if that’s even a thing that’s happening?\n
\n
As a complete beginner, what sort of advice would you all have for me? Should I avoid OpenSUSE or KDE Plasma for some reason? Are there any ‘10 things to do first when installing Linux for the first time’ recommendations?\n
\n
Despite all the ‘beginner friendly’ guides and tutorials around, I still feel a little lost and like I’m going into this blind.\n
\n
EDIT: Thanks to everyone who’s offered advice, I really appreciate all the help and the patience with my dumb questions! There’s a lot to look through and it’s been a busy day for me, but I’ll get back to reading through everything and replying as soon as I can!

+title: "Preparing to move from Ubuntu to Fedora"
+url: null
+body: """
Hi! I’m seeking some advice and sanity check on hopping from Ubuntu to Fedora on my personal PC. I’ve been using Ubuntu LTS for almost two years now, switched from Windows and never looked back. But I cannot say I know Linux well. I use my PC for browsing, some gaming with Steam (I have AMD GPU), occasional video editing, tinkering with some self-hosted stuff that is on separate hardware.\n
\n
I don’t like the way Ubuntu is moving with snaps. And LTS version falls behind too much. So I decided to move to Fedora.\n
\n
My plan is simple:\n
\n
1. I will install Fedora on a fresh nvme drive. I want disk encryption, so I’m going to have LUKS over btrfs for /home, and the root will remain unencrypted.\n
2. I will copy all files from old /home to new /home, with the exception of dot-files.\n
3. I plan to make use of flatpaks, so I don’t think configuration for my apps is easily transferable. I’ll have to install and configure apps from scratch, unless I’ll have to use an RPM package.\n
\n
Does all of this make sense? Is there a way to simplify app re-configuration in my case?\n
\n
And as I never used Fedora extensively (booting from live image doesn’t count), are there any caveats I should be aware of?

Hey guys, I just had a curiosity on the multiple ways of storaging stuff and how long would that hold, take backing it up to a newer storage after some years out of the table.\n
\n
So how did this come in my mind, I was just reminiscing about how I used to play games with inserting a CD or Cartridge onto the device and how I miss that flavour.\n
\n
I would like to do it again, I already like having my games dependancy free (praise mr goldmountain), and I am saving up some money to spend on hoarding possibilities. I would like to know what would have the longest storage life, would burning games into bluray discs be too unhinged or is something I am missing?\n
\n
Thanks in advance in helping me out witht his brainstorm.
