First off: This post is about a tiny Leatherman multitool. Not a gun, not a sword, not something that can actually hurt someone. Just a small, harmless tool that is unfairly banned from planes because of onerous TSA regs. No one is going to do 9/11 with tiny pliers and a fingernail-sized screwdriver.\n
\n
Now that that’s cleared up…\n
\n
There are 2 things I hate: Going without my keychain-sized Leatherman, and checking a bag at the airport. Unfortunately, these things are in conflict, as TSA won’t let me take my precious Squirt (actual product name… ew) in my carry on. Over the years, I’ve probably lost half a dozen multitools to overzealous airport security, both in the US and abroad.\n
\n
I’ve probably gotten it past security over a dozen times, but there doesn’t seem to be any consistency to it. Packing it between my razor and my beard trimmer worked for a while, until it didn’t. Lining it up with the handlebars of my suitcase worked a couple times. But then I lost another one.\n
\n
“Did you know they sell airport-friendly Leathermans that don’t have a knife?” Yes I do. Did **you** know that several overseas airports straight up don’t care, and will take it anyway? (I’m looking at you, Philippines and Costa Rica.)\n
\n
I don’t need a different tool. What I really need is a reliable method to get this tiny tool past security, so that I can peacefully open beers, fix janky hotel showers, and open the occaisional package without having to buy a new Leatherman every year.\n
\n
Thank you in advance for your calm, measured, and helpful responses.

I’ve been dual booting Linux recently and noticed whenever I was in Linux it would crash/reboot after a couple of hours or less of using it. I noticed the behavior was similar to when I set the voltages too low when initially setting up the undervolt so I disabled it and haven’t had any crashed since. Any idea why it would be stable on Windows but not Linux? I tried a couple of different distros as well. I’ll probably just raise the voltage until I get it stable again but I’m interested to know what could cause this! If its relevant my CPU is a Ryzen 7 3800x"

Hello community!\n
\n
I come to you for advice. Using an m1 macbook air since 2020, I installed popos on my old 2013 macbook pro and I was quite happy with it but… I bought a steamdeck two weeks ago and exploring its desktop mode made me reconsider some choices. Using distros based on different systems, with different commands, desktop environment, etc. gets a little confusing for someone like me, who doesn’t use linux as my main machine. Do you have any advice for me? From what I understand, steamos is debian-based while popos is ubuntu-based: is that the biggest part of how a distribution works, ie commands, etc.? Good ui/ux is important for me so i should maybe use nitrux or deepin, that are debian-based, or is it a bad idea to choose a less common distro for a amateur like me?\n
\n
Thanks in advance, I’m a bit lost.

Hi, I’m an old windows user who have played with linux* a few times, but never commited to it.\n
\n
I want to dive deeper and I though about installing linux in a VM. Some basic questions:\n
\n
- Is that a good idea? / Anything I should take into account?\n
- Is there any preferred VM manager for this? Windows comes with Hyper-V, but I remember reading about how Hyper-V is not ideal (I could be wrong).\n
- Do different distributions work better or worse on VMs?\n
- Are there any major differences when using linux in a VM compared to a bare metal installation?\n
\n
And some not-so-basic ones:\n
\n
- Is there any [dis]advantage to “Linux VM on Windows” VS “Windows VM on Linux”?\n
- If I start with “Linux VM on Windows”, would it be possible to swap them in the future? What I mean is: \n
- Virtualize the Windows installation so it can be run as a VM.\n
- Un-virtualize the Linux VM (with all its contents and configuration) and move it to bare metal.\n
- Run Windows VM on linux.\n
\n
Notes:\n
\n
- I did a quick search and, although I found multiple articles about the topic, the ones I’ve read just show one way to do it without comparing it to the alternatives.\n
- I’m aware of WSL(2), but I would like to be able to decouple from Windows in the future.\n
- EIDT: I tried dual booting in the past. The main problem is that I’m too lazy to reboot every time I want to try something in linux and I end up not using it.\n

+url: null
+body: """
Hi Lemmy, My HOA sent out a email saying dogs are no longer allowed on any grass in common areas or front yards including grass between sidewalk and curb which is… everywhere except our own tiny backyards. The reasoning is some dog urine effected dead spots. Honestly I didn’t even notice them, it’s 95° here and all the grass looks sad.\n
\n
It’s a walking town and we are not a gated community, non-residents walk their dogs here all the time, so this rule can only punish those who live here and has no ability to effect others.\n
\n
Anyway, this seems like a ‘we have tried nothing and we are all out of ideas!’ moment so I wanted to see if anyone here had any suggestions I can pass on to maintain a “good” curb appeal ground cover-wise while allowing dogs to do normal dog stuff.\n
\n
I can converse with the HOA board in good faith, but this rule is basically banning dogs from the neighborhood - which I super did not sign up for.\n
\n
Pertainent info: PA, USA - Town Home style homes - small central common grass - owned for 8y.\n
\n
*Edit:* it seems like people may have glossed over the question part and skipped straight to HOA bashing (which is warranted at times!) so I will rephrase:\n
\n
What *ground covering* or neighborhood solutions to similar (perceived) issues have other communities employed?

I want to power [this board](https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/RP2040-Touch-LCD-1.28) with a 14v battery. The board has a 1s battery connector that can power the board and read the voltage via ADC. My understanding is that voltage splitting with resistors is not recommended for powering. And a buck converter will only give constant voltage reading.

Hi, my cousin has an Xbox Series S, and anytime he would move it the fan would make some pretty freaky noises.\n
\n
I repair computers so I thought I can handle this. I also replaced the thermal paste, and ultimately found the fan to be really loose.\n
\n
I ordered the replacement fan but when I tried to power it on to make sure I did everything correctly it didn’t work. It made the startup noise, fan would spin and then shut off. No error messages.\n
\n
I removed a coat of thermal paste and was very careful when working around the CPU. I am scared I broke his Xbox now that there is no error codes or any message, and abruptly shutting off after a few seconds of the fan spinning.\n
\n
I won’t know until tomorrow when the fan arrives and I power it up.\n
\n
What should I do?

Hi, my cousin has an Xbox Series S, and anytime he would move it the fan would make some pretty freaky noises.\n

I won’t know until tomorrow when the fan arrives and I power it up.\n

Imagine being an enemy Pokemon that gets hit by an itemizer orb. One instant, you were a living organism, the next, you’re an object. This raises all kinds of existential questions that get scarier the more you think about it. At what point are you killed by the process? The best case scenario for you is that you die the instant the magic hits you and the rest is moot.\n
\n
But if that doesn’t happen… Hoo boy. Will you feel your body being compressed and transmuted into an Oran Berry? Will you feel the excruciating pain as your nerves are destroyed at the atomic level to be turned into plant cells and sugar? The Lore in PMD very heavily implies the existence of some sort of life energy that animates living things, so what if that life energy stays in the thing you’re turned into? Object Pokemon like Chimecho and Trubbish exist, so it’s entirely possible that your life energy can just keep on existing inside the item you’re turned into. Imagine being stuck as an item, conscious, but unable to move and with no senses to tell you about the outside world. Nothing but your own thoughts to keep your company. You’re initially terrified of the prospect that you’ll be eaten if you turned into food or used up in battle if you’re an orb or something. But after days, weeks, months, without sensory input or anything but your own increasingly incoherent thoughts, mind broken by complete isolation, you begin to crave the sweet release of death. You begin to desperately hope that you’ll be gobbled up by the next explorer that happens by you, or deployed in a battle, or at least be taken to the recycle shop, anything that will let your aura escape and your life to end–at least you hope that’s what will happen when your “body” is destroyed. But it’s not like you can do anything to cause or avoid it, nor will you be able to see it coming anyhow. You just hope that you won’t be able to feel pain in this state, but in the Pokemon universe, not even that is a given.

I can’t explain it, something about the freedom of acquisition takes the pressure off and lets me just launch it and try it out.\n
\n
Maybe it’s easier to pay some money and hit “install”, than it is to find a torrent, download it and go through the install process, so there’s a selection bias there.\n
\n
Maybe it’s the fact I downloaded it *exactly when I decided to* and not when a sale happened or it was in a bundle.\n
\n
But even then, when I decide I want something right now and I pay full-price, something about that just puts a psychological barrier in between me and enjoying the game. Like now I have to validate the purchase, and if I want a refund it has to happen within 2 weeks, and within 2 hours of play (for steam). It’s just an unpleasant feeling.\n
\n
Even worse is the subscription model. I absolutely hate the pressure of having to try all the games I put on my list before the end of the month so I don’t have to renew to keep trying them, that just feels like wasted money. But then about a week into the month I’ll lose my energy for trying new games and I’ll let the sub lapse and never try a bunch of the games I wanted to. It’s the worst way to pay for games, even if on paper it’s the cheapest for trying a bunch of them legally.\n
\n
Very occasionally a game will come along that I know I want and will happily pay for immediately, and usually that means I’ll give it a decent try.\n
\n
The best experience for me is pirating a game and loving it so much I then buy it, that guarantees I’m going to play it a lot. The latest game that happened to me with was A Dance of Fire and Ice. I bought it like 5 times, once each for me and my two kids, and twice on phone, and I was completely happy to. I even built a custom rhythm controller for it.\n
\n
Funny story though - the pirated version of ADOFAI puts savegames in user folders, but the steam version puts them in the game folder, so it merges the progress between users. So for that reason, the pirated version is better. I can’t explain the discrepancy.
