Hello!\n
\n
I have some weird problems since I upgraded from 0.18.4 to 0.19.1 (I did it incrementally).\n
\n
Posts doesnt seem to show up any more, for example if I, on the web (just to illustrate, its the same with Jer oa or Voyager) go here:\n
\n
[lemmy.sdf.org/c/permacomputing](https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/permacomputing)\n
\n
I can see a bunch of posts.\n
\n
But if I go through my server:\n
\n
[lemmy.mindoki.com/c/permacomputing@lemmy.sdf.org](https://lemmy.mindoki.com/c/permacomputing@lemmy.sdf.org)\n
\n
There is no pists at all (I have refreshed, waited, reloaded…).\n
\n
I do see the page of the community on both links though.\n
\n
Anyone having an idea about what could be wrong? Am I banned everywhere (I have never been to lemmy.sdf.org before and I usually don’t behave bad online at all).\n
\n
I’m asking here because the lemmy.ml and lemmy.world support has tge same problem (??).\n
\n
Cheers

In this version its also common with CPU spikes on a regular basis. I assume its the new federation queue that takes more cpu in exchange for being more reliable. So I have a nearly full 4 TB hard drive in my server that I want to make an offline backup of. I also only have one USB hard drive dock so I can only plug in one hard drive at a time, and in any case I don’t want to do any sort of RAID 0 or striping because the hard drives are old and I don’t want a single one of them failing to make the entire backup unrecoverable.\n

I could just play digital Tetris and just manually copy over individual directories to each smaller drive until they fill up while mentally keeping track of which directories still need to be copied when I change drives, but I’m hoping for a more automatic and less error prone way. Ideally, I’d want something that can automatically begin copying the entire contents of a given drive or directory to a drive that isn’t big enough to fit everything, automatically round down to the last file that will fit in its entirety (I don’t want to split files between drives), and then wait for me to unplug the first drive and plug in another drive and specify a new mount point before continuing to copy the remaining files, using as many drives as necessary to copy everything.\n

Does anyone know of something that can accomplish all of this on a Linux system?

+title: "What's an elegant way of automatically backing up the contents of a large drive to multiple smaller drives that add up to the capacity of the large drive? (on Linux)"
+url: null
+body: """
So I have a nearly full 4 TB hard drive in my server that I want to make an offline backup of. However, the only spare hard drives I have are a few 500 GB and 1 TB ones, so the entire contents will not fit all at once, but I do have enough total space for it. I also only have one USB hard drive dock so I can only plug in one hard drive at a time, and in any case I don’t want to do any sort of RAID 0 or striping because the hard drives are old and I don’t want a single one of them failing to make the entire backup unrecoverable.\n
\n
\n
Does anyone know of something that can accomplish all of this on a Linux system?

+title: "Getting a Server Running - SteamOS - Best Path Forward?"
+url: null
+body: """
For context - I’m working on getting an emulated Everquest server up and running, but hitting dead ends (probably due to my newness to Linux in general) and seeking some guidance from the community on what I’ve tried and best path forward.\n
\n
My ultimate goal is to get it running on SteamOS - I have it fully operational on my actual server machine running Ubuntu, but trying to get it working here so I can just connect locally (i.e on a plane) so I don’t need to connect externally. Here is the situation and obstacles;\n
\n
I’ve been trying for a minute now to get EQEmu setup on the SteamOS side of the house for ease of launching with client, but running into obstacles in several different directionns, and wanted to see if someone had some guidance on best path forwarrd.\n
\n
First Route - VM - Linux Mint - Docker - I have a successful server up and running via Gnome Boxes with a Linux Mint guest OS - then docker and akkstakk running on it.\n
\n
The obstacle - I can’t seem to bridge the connection of the guest OS with host OS (guest can ping host, host cannot ping guest). If I can bridge (no pun intended) this gap, it’ll most likely be the route I go\n
\n
Second Route - Distrobox - Ubuntu When running Distrobox directly on SteamOS - I’m trying to get the linux install running - however there is a multitude of issues with permissions being denied. This is likely due to SteamOS’ immutable system. To bypass it, it is possible to offset this via turning off read only. However, I don’t want to pursue that route, as anything written to the file system gets wiped on update to the OS.\n
\n
Third Route - WINE - Lutris - SteamOS Another route I’ve tried is utilizing WINE with the windows installer. I think this could help bypass some of the restrictions of the system while having it run on that.\n
\n
Obstacle here: Running the .bat file yields the following message - mariadb-10.0.21-winx64.msi: File Not Found Installing MariaDB (Root Password: eqemu) LOADING… PLEASE WAIT… “sh” isn’t a recognized shell. Please open an issue at [git.rootprojects.org/root/pathman/issues?q=sh](https://git.rootprojects.org/root/pathman/issues?q=sh)warning: couldn’t access “C:\Program Files\MariaDB 10.0\bin”: CreateFile C:\Program Files\MariaDB 10.0\bin: Path not found. PATH not changed.\n
\n
I tried manually executing mariadb and perl, but it still hangs up at both. I see that i ntuser, it’s still not finding them.\n
\n
So all that to say, trying to find a way to make this work. I’m the closest with the VM, but can’t figure out the connection there. Distrobox would be a mess of troubleshooting, and WINE I feel could almost work if I could get the PATHs to work (maybe).\n
\n
Any input or guidance is widely appreciated for such a niche request.

+url: null
+body: """
Hello everyone!\n
\n
Disclaimer : I'm the creator of the project!\n
--------------------------------------------\n
\n
Project : <https://github.com/rollsicecream/privacy-dns-chooser>\n
\n
I have released the version 1.0 of what I call The Privacy DNS Chooser Script. This very simple but very easy to use CLI script allows you to choose Quad9, Mullvad DNS and NextDNS (more coming soon!) and use them on Linux with the systemd-resolved package (which is nowadays installed on all Linux distros, except Debian).\n
\n
One of the cool features of the script is an NextDNS integration. This means that when the user chooses NextDNS to use it, the script will ask him to enter his configuration number (e.g. a12345)\n
\n
Also, if you are in trouble (like if your Internet’s not working anymore after running the script). There’s a “rescue script” which will recover /etc/systemd/resolved.conf to his default state. Thus recovering your internet connection.\n
\n
Why did I make this script? Well, I think on Linux, we are very late when it comes to setting up a DNS provider. We can only set up an IP address as an DNS while on Windows 11 and macOS Ventura, we have the ability to use DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS which are way more secure ways of using DNS, directly into a GUI. Where on Linux, the only way to do that is via, you guessed it : /etc/systemd/resolved.conf a.k.a. systemd-resolved.\n
\n
Upcoming features for the script :\n
\n
- Add Support for AdGuard (should come out at the end of the year)\n
- Add options for the user to choose the Ad, Tracker and Malware blocking version of Mullvad DNS or the standard non-blocking DNS (Early January 2024)\n
- Add Cloudflare and ControlD support (March/April 2024)\n
\n
**Thanks!**

\n

I’m kinda new to linux, however I seem to remember running a headless ububtu server years back. Also remember it took a long time to setup being my first headless server.\n
\n
So, to my current issues. I just installed mint on an old pc and just want to use it to run my security cams, store the files, and host my nas. Took me over 6 hours to get the raid setup properly, so much differing information on ‘how to’ for noobs like myself, but managed to get it working and moving files over to raid file now.\n
\n
Coming from mostly windows crap most of my life, its confusing where and how the raid is setup, and honestly I’m still not convinced I did it right, but everything I check says it is, and I’m sure it knows better than I do.\n
\n
Ok, now the issue, how in the ever lovin shit can I just share that stupid folder/disk to my network. 90% of the options are greyed out while looking at the properties tab, and need sudo access to change it, so whats the point in having the gui? Am I just dumb and smoked way too many doobies? Got samba installed, but not configured yet, only cause I ran across much more conflicting info, some said in mint its easy like windows…right click and share that shit, easy right? Even I didn’t think so, and I’m ok with that, I’m really sick of windows and want to convert all the pc’s but damn…stiff learning curve.\n
\n
Don’t get me wrong, I ran DOS back in the day, and I was not bad at it, better than your normal user at the time but by no means a power user. So I should be able to grab the concept quickly, but I am failing. Total of 12 hrs on this now and considering just putting win7 back on this pig and giving up.\n

I know no one can give me direct answers, and not looking for tech support, but looking for advice so im not wanting to ‘hulk smash’ this thing

+body: """
\n
I know no one can give me direct answers, and not looking for tech support, but looking for advice so im not wanting to ‘hulk smash’ this thing

Hello Lemmy,\n
\n
I am back once more speaking about my kemono/Coomer project, and this time I am finally releasing a public beta!\n
\n
For the better part of a month, I’ve been working on this GUI + library and while its not really that complicated to make, I’ve continued to improve it as much as I can!\n
\n
This project has so far exceeded my expectations. It supports scanning for mega links in post descriptions and downloading them if the user requests it (this requires proxies however due to mega quota). If you plan to use this feature, I highly recommend Proxifier (I hear it’s available on the 7 seas).\n
\n
It supports mass image downloading, mass video downloading, built-in text translations via Google Translate, config support, and more!\n
\n
If you’re an avid user of kemono/Coomer, I humbly implore you to try out my program and tell me what you think! Please report any bugs that may exist on the GitHub repo.\n
\n
[Let’s get sailing pirates](https://github.com/AmnesiaIsHere/PartyLib)\n
\n
EDIT: Mega.nz support is experimental right now, so it is disabled by default on the GUI. MegaCMD server has some very strange hanging issues that I will be addressing in a future update.
