I am trying to get Outer Wilds running on my Debian machine, and the “running” itself was a breeze. It runs perfectly on Lutris. But somehow my controller doesn’t communicate with the game. I did check if it is being picked up at all, and using the jstest-gtk tool, I could see that every input is being registered. Same applies to steam, Even in Big Picture mode nothing happens on screen when tapping all the buttons or moving some joystick.\n

Does someone know how I could go about fixing this issue? At first I thought that this would be a wine thing, but steam is native, and even it doesn’t recognize the controller…

\n
Does someone know how I could go about fixing this issue? At first I thought that this would be a wine thing, but steam is native, and even it doesn’t recognize the controller…

Can commodity products detect which pixel you’re looking at on a screen?\n
\n
For a number of years, I’ve wanted a system that eliminates mouse pointer devices. In my imaginary system, there are hotkeys bound to left & right mouse clicks, and what gets clicked is whatever you’re looking at.\n
\n
When I’ve looked at this before, the tech field tends to suffer in granularity and/or physical limitations, like needing to limit gross head movements. Most products talk about what they *can* do, but avoid talking about their limitations. It can be hard to find out what devices are capable of - accuracy, working with corrective eyewear, speed, head movement, software (OS) support, etc. Many products are geared at research, leading me to believe the tech isn’t there yet.\n
\n
Anyone have, or used a device that would be able to replace a mouse?

+title: "How to patch YouTube on Android with ReVanced"
+url: null
+body: """
When I wanted to set this up, the process was confusing I found a post [on Reddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/revancedapp/comments/159zbb6/guide_youtube_revanced/) that provided more clear instructions for me to use. I’ve copied it here (and fixed some of the spelling mistakes) so that it’s on Lemmy too.\n
\n
---\n
\n
Hi!! Since i used to struggle a lot with the guides available (partially bc of attention span issues) and i had to figure out lots of things myself when i first got into ReVanced, here’s a step by step guide for downloading it on non-root devices! :>\n
\n
Be nice please and excuse any grammar errors since English isn’t my first language, if there’s anything i missed, let me know!\n
\n
DISCLAIMER: Never download from (or use) sites that arent apkmirror and/or GitHub. These are the only ones necessary anyway and the other ones are not trustworthy. Also, ReVanced doesn’t work for iPhone devices as far as I’m aware (sorry lol). THE STEPS IN THIS GUIDE MIGHT NOT BE NECESSARY FOR EVERYONE BUT THEY WERE FOR ME its okay if you find it a little overboard but i struggle with following tutorials and i struggled with errors that most ppl didn’t mention anywhere so i included the fixes that helped me!\n
\n
Links for the necessary downloads are at the end\n
\n
Preparations:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Turn off Google Play Protect\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Allow unknown downloads for your browser in settings\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disable/uninstall YouTube app\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Steps:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Download Vanced microg\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Download Revanced Manager\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open your files app and install both\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open ReVanced Manager. Check for the suggested version of YouTube (patcher -> select application, then find YouTube and check for the currently suggested version)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Look up "YouTube apk [suggested version]", find & open apkmirror.com, download the correct one that is NOT a bundle (and pick nodpi) and install it as well\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Go back to ReVanced Manager. patcher>select application>YouTube.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Click on selected patches. either use the default ones or you can do some cherry picking on your own. (some patches that i find worth including are at the very end, dont entirely depend on them alone tho)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Once done with patches, ensure that you included "vanced microg support". That one is necessary.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Press done and patch. Once its finished, just install it.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
there you go :> ReVanced is ready to be used and you can sign in to your account\n
\n
Shorter Version:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Download and install Vanced microg, ReVanced Manager and the currently suggested YouTube APK\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open Revanced Manager, select YouTube to patch it\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Select the patches you want (must include Vanced microg support)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Let it apply the patches and install once its ready\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Repatching ReVanced after an Update\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Open and update ReVanced Manager if needed\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Check the currently suggested Youtube version and download it, if necessary, from apkmirror.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Delete the old Youtube APK since you wont be using it anymore\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Repatch and install\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
NOTES:\n
\n
-I don’t recommend just applying all patches, especially since you may not want everything they have to offer or they sometimes cause problems for some people. its best to go with default and then check if there’s anything you want to change (including or excluding some patches)\n
\n
-if, for whatever reason, you still encounter errors such as the patching process aborting, the app not opening or something else going wrong, please make sure you have followed every step correctly and if necessary, go over your patches again. Try starting from the beginning if you cant find other solutions.\n
\n
-after you have successfully finished everything, feel free to turn Google Play Protect back on or disable downloading from unknown sources for your browser, if you’d like.\n
\n
the most important patches (imo) to be included:\n
\n
-vanced microg support (obviously)\n
\n
-client spoof\n
\n
-hide ads\n
\n
-hide watermark\n
\n
-sponsorblock\n
\n
-video ads\n
\n
plus: exclude enable debugging to make ReVanced work more smoothly!\n
\n
And like i said, don’t just rely on them entirely otherwise your YouTube app will probably suck really bad ngl but these are the ones i feel like should be included for sure.\n
\n
Links:\n
\n
[Vanced microg](https://github.com/TeamVanced/VancedMicroG/releases/tag/v0.2.24.220220-220220001)\n
\n
[ReVanced manager](https://github.com/ReVanced/revanced-manager/releases)\n
\n
As for the YouTube APK, you can look up the suggested version and find it on apkmirror **(Note:I didn’t put the link here because I think it may count as a link to a pirated title, not sure though)**\n
\n
Good Luck!!

\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Turn off Google Play Protect\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Allow unknown downloads for your browser in settings\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disable/uninstall YouTube app\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Steps:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Download Vanced microg\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Download Revanced Manager\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open your files app and install both\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open ReVanced Manager. Check for the suggested version of YouTube (patcher -> select application, then find YouTube and check for the currently suggested version)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Look up "YouTube apk [suggested version]", find & open apkmirror.com, download the correct one that is NOT a bundle (and pick nodpi) and install it as well\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Go back to ReVanced Manager. patcher>select application>YouTube.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Click on selected patches. either use the default ones or you can do some cherry picking on your own. (some patches that i find worth including are at the very end, dont entirely depend on them alone tho)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Once done with patches, ensure that you included "vanced microg support". That one is necessary.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Press done and patch. Once its finished, just install it.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
there you go :> ReVanced is ready to be used and you can sign in to your account\n
\n
Shorter Version:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Download and install Vanced microg, ReVanced Manager and the currently suggested YouTube APK\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Open Revanced Manager, select YouTube to patch it\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Select the patches you want (must include Vanced microg support)\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Let it apply the patches and install once its ready\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Repatching ReVanced after an Update\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Open and update ReVanced Manager if needed\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Check the currently suggested Youtube version and download it, if necessary, from apkmirror.\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Delete the old Youtube APK since you wont be using it anymore\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Repatch and install\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
NOTES:\n

I need to upgrade my laptop and one of the things I’m looking for is repairability/upgradability. I’ve been told thinkpads are good in this respect, how true is that? With that in mind, any particular series of thinkpad (L, S, whatever) I should look for? I’m hardline against nvidia but is there a reason to pick AMD over Intel (or vice versa)? They both are privacy nightmares, right? And there is *no* “good alternative?”

Maybe the wrong place to ask, so sorry to the mods if thats the case.\n
\n
I’ve a load of movies on DVD and wonder if its worth converting to mp4 and building a personal media centre to save loading each and every disc. I’ve tried to convert a movie I like to mp4 today using VLC but that crashes. I then downloaded winxdvd ripper - that worked better but cut the movie off after 10 minutes (I fail to see why I should have to pay 40 quid to get more than 10 mins of video).\n
\n
I also tried an old Ubuntu install on another laptop and Handbrake and VLC there but got no video at all.\n
\n
Is there any app/program that is open source/actually free where I can just drop in my DVD and create an easy mp4 file to be viewed via my media player/TV?\n
\n
Thanks in advance

I’ve been looking for something to replace the google chromecast that is attached to our TV.\n
\n
I’ve tried Kodi out, but the main use case for the TV set is a 70+ yo person watching netflix and there is just no way they will be better off with Kodi than with the stock netflix app.\n
\n
Besides supporting netflix, being easy to use, and providing significantly better privacy than the chromecast does, the device would ideally:\n
\n
- support other mainstream streaming (amazon, disney, …) for when my people get tired of netflix\n
- support a DVB-T2 usb stick (directly, or through IPTV: I can put the stick in a different machine)\n
- support youtube without ads (through an adblocker and possibly sponsorblock, or maybe using invidious)\n
- possibly, support local public TV streaming (eg. BBC)\n
\n
I have a PC set aside that should be more than capable enough (intel N100), but I’m open to getting new hardware if needed. Also, it doesn’t matter if the system is not very user friendly to setup (eg. if it needs to be nixos), but once it’s setup it should be easy to use and relatively straightforward to update/maintain.\n
\n
I guess a FOSS android TV would be ideal, but… is there any? (I see Lineage supports the Google ADT-3, but that is basically unobtanium, at least where I live).

If you kill Minsc instead of saving him, and then don’t talk to Jahiera before the battle, she finds out about it after your speech, is hella pissed, tells you off, and leaves. She already pledged her harpers though, so you still get to use them.

The Shar-worshipping crazy goth chick is a great character concept. Trouble is, the game seems to throw a lot of great light-related cleric spells and equipment at us, and all the alternatives seem to be bad. From an RP point of view, Shadowheart obviously shouldn’t be wielding a light-emitting mace, wearing radiance armor, and shooting Faerie Fire and Guiding Bolt all over the place. But I can’t find a lore-friendly playstyle that isn’t substantially worse in fights.\n
\n
Some of the Shar-related equipment, and the Trickery domain subclass perks, seem to point to some sort of melee cleric build exploiting darkness. But the overall effect seems subpar; for starters, clerics can’t cast Darkness, so another party member would need to supply that, which is clunky.\n
