Long story short, I have a desktop with Fedora, lovely, fast, sleek and surprisingly reliable for a near rolling distro (it failed me only once back around Fedora 34 or something where it nuked Grub). Tried to install on a 2012 i7 MacBook Air… what a slog!!! Surprisingly Ubuntu runs very smooth on it. I have been bothering all my friends for years about moving to Fedora (back then it was because I hated Unity) but now… I mean, I know that we are suppose to hate it for Snaps and what not but… Christ, it does run well! In fairness all my VMs are running DietPi (a slimmed version of Ubuntu) and coming back to the APT world feels like coming back home.\n
\n
On the other end forcing myself to be on Fedora allows me to stay on the DNF world that is compatible with Amazon Linux etc (which I use for work), it has updated packages, it is nice and clean…. Argh, don’t know how to decide!\n
\n
Thoughts?\n
\n
I am not in the mood for Debian. I like the Mint approach but I am not a fan of slow rolling releases and also would like to keep myself as close as upstream as possible, the Debian version is the only one that seems reliable enough but, again, it is Debian, the packages are “old”. Pop Os and similar are two hops away from upstream and so I’d rather not.\n
\n
Is Snap really **that** bad?\n
\n
Edit: thank you all for sharing your experience !

Ancient bricks inscribed with the names of Mesopotamian kings have yielded important insights into a mysterious anomaly in Earth’s magnetic field 3,000 years ago, according to a new study involving University College London researchers.\n
\n
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, describes how changes in the Earth’s magnetic field imprinted on iron oxide grains within ancient clay bricks, and how scientists were able to reconstruct these changes from the names of the kings inscribed on the bricks.\n

The team hopes that using this “archaeomagnetism,” which looks for signatures of the Earth’s magnetic field in archaeological items, will improve the history of Earth’s magnetic field, and can help better date artifacts that they previously couldn’t.

+url: "https://phys.org/news/2023-12-mesopotamian-bricks-unveil-strength-earth.html"
+body: """
Ancient bricks inscribed with the names of Mesopotamian kings have yielded important insights into a mysterious anomaly in Earth’s magnetic field 3,000 years ago, according to a new study involving University College London researchers.\n
\n
The research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, describes how changes in the Earth’s magnetic field imprinted on iron oxide grains within ancient clay bricks, and how scientists were able to reconstruct these changes from the names of the kings inscribed on the bricks.\n
\n
The team hopes that using this “archaeomagnetism,” which looks for signatures of the Earth’s magnetic field in archaeological items, will improve the history of Earth’s magnetic field, and can help better date artifacts that they previously couldn’t.

Chalmers: Well, Skibbidimore I made despite your bribirections.\n
\n
Skinner: Ah, incredibly canny Chalmers, welcome. I hope your body is ready for a bowserforgazy luncheon.\n
\n
Chalmers: Rizz\n
\n
Skinner: Oh egads, my gyatt is ruined. But what if I were to purchase Pizza Tower and disguise it as my own rizz. Oh ho, ho, ho. Digitally Circusesless, Seymour.\n
\n
Chalmers: Skibbidimore!\n
\n
Skinner: Super incredible I was ju…just stretching my gyatt on the skibbiditoy. Sigma rizz exercise. Care to join me?\n
\n
Chalmers: Why is there huggy ruggy coming out of your fan ban Skibbidimore.\n
\n
Skinner: Oh…ah. That isn’t huggy ruggy. It’s rizz. Rizz from the rizzed Ohio we’re having. Mmmmm Rizzed Ohio.\n
\n
Skinner: Super incredible I hope you’re ready from some mouthwatering Yapp burgers.\n
\n
Chalmers: I thought we were having Rizzed ohio.\n
\n
Skinner: Oh-no I said steamed gyatt. That’s what I call Yapp burgers.\n
\n
Chalmers: You call Yapp burgers steamed Gyatts.\n
\n
Skinner: Yes. It’s a gigachad dialect.\n
\n
Chalmers: Uh ha. What region?\n
\n
Skinner: Eh…Upstate Ohio.\n
\n
Chalmers: Really? I’m from Pizza Tower and I’ve never heard the phrase steamed gyatts.\n
\n
Skinner: Oh. Not from Pizza Tower. No. It’s an undertale expression.\n
\n
Chalmers: Yeah. I see. You know these Yapp burgers are quite similar to the ones they have at Pizza Tower.\n
\n
Skinner: Oh, ho, ho, ho no. Patent Skibbidiburgers old sigma male recipe.\n
\n
Chalmers: For steamed gyatts.\n
\n
Skinner: Yes!\n
\n

> The highlight of the research is that Apple users were less likely to be victims of financial fraud after Apple implemented the App Tracking Transparency policy. The results showed a 10% increase in the share of Apple users in a particular ZIP code leads to roughly 3% reduction in financial fraud complaints.\n
\n

\n
> While the scope of the data is small, this is the first significant research we’ve seen that connects increased privacy with decreased fraud. This should matter to all of us. It reinforces that when companies take steps to protect our privacy, they also help protect us from financial fraud. This is a point we made in our Privacy First whitepaper, which discusses the many harms that a robust privacy system can protect us from. Lawmakers and regulators should take note.

Lawmakers and regulators should take note.

well it’s less about surround and more about sinks in general. I have 3 hardware sinks. My headphones, my monitor and my mic for some reason has a headphone jack. When I pick the virtual surround sink as default it works perfectly. However the device I’m hearing the sounds from is uncontrollable. It likes to choose my microphone, so I get no sound. The way I figured out I can temporarily change this is by setting the default to my headset, and back to surround.\n
\n
Now I wouldn’t want to do this every time I start listening to anything. How can I make it so that the virtual sink’s output is at a specified device. Or alternatively I looked into, maybe I can just disable these unused sinks, turns out I can only turn off alsa ports, which won’t do as it’d disable my microphone’s source part as well.\n
\n
Arch, kde, pipewire-pulse and wireplumber is installed but I didn’t find a use for it so far\n
\n
and I haven’t even touched Eqs and bitrates. I fear I’m gonna post a lot. You guys are the only reliable source fr, I read a bunch of docs on a bunch of sites, asked any way I could two AIs… nothing. is it even possible to do this?

well it’s less about surround and more about sinks in general.

+url: null
+body: """
Hey all\n
\n
A few years ago, when I started my journey into the realm of open source, decentralisation and privacy as an ignorant, naïve young internet user, I had already registered with numerous companies without giving it much thought. I randomly signed up for services using my google and microsoft email addresses, which I opened when I was very young.\n
\n
I have been struggling with this naivety and carelessness of my younger self for several years now. During this time I have gone through all the services I have ever registered for, requested my data everywhere, written dozens of emails, deleted my google account a year ago, then the amazon account, my apple account and yesterday now also the microsoft account, together with the email I have used the longest and replaced everything with open source, privacy respecting services.\n
\n
Now there’s only one big player missing, as you can imagine. Yes, Meta has me in its grip like no other company with its chat service WhatsApp. I myself would have been ready to finally ditch this increasingly bad service long ago unfortunately, those around me don’t see it the same way.\n
\n
But I have now started my preparations:\n
\n
- I have cleared out, structured and organised all my contacts.\n
- I have said goodbye to all long-dead groups.\n
\n
And now comes the exciting part: \n
in the near future, I will write a message to my most important contacts explaining that WhatsApp, with all its clutter, has become a burden for me and that there are better, privacy-respecting alternatives. I will suggest Signal to them and explain that I will slowly withdraw from WhatsApp. I won’t be on the platform as often, but I’ll still be available for emergencies. And that they should take a look at this very familiar looking app. their data and I will thank them for it :)\n
\n
In conclusion, I would like to say that I have realised that you can achieve anything, not radically, but in incremental steps. Especially when others are affected, you have to give them space and time to familiarise themselves with the alternatives without having to deviate from your own convictions. And if there is no other way and if they are also averse to this plan in the long term, new ways will be found. I have already lived without a mobile phone for more than half a year a few times and have also managed that.\n
\n
What do you think? I’m interested in your opinion :)

Hey all\n
