I have an oldish Dell Latitude 7480 which doesn’t meet the requirements for upgrade to Windows 11 so I thought I’d take the opportunity to install Linux on it as I only really need it for day to day web stuff / studying / media and light gaming.\n
\n
My first choice was Linux Mint but, for some reason it would not recognise that the laptop had a wifi card. So I tried Manjaro but felt Arch wasn’t for me so opted for Pop_OS and whilst everything I want works I thought I’d use the time to distro hop live environments to see what else was out there.\n
\n
I know live envs doesn’t give you the full picture but to be honest I was more interested in the aesthetic appeal of the DE.\n
\n
Where my curiosity lies is this, from my understanding Linux Mint is based on underlying Ubuntu as is Pop_OS, so how come both Pop_OS and Ubuntu recognise the wi-fi card out of the box so to speak but Mint doesn’t.\n
\n
This is the wifi card in question:\n
\n
```\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> description: Wireless interface\n
And with this in mind, does anyone have any idea how to get this wi-fi card working with Mint, I’m assuming I need a drive which the other drivers have but Mint, for whatever reason, doesn’t have.\n
I thought it would be easier to edit the post than reply to you all individually and thanks to everyone who took the time to respond so quickly.\n
\n
I’ve just re-tried with the latest version 21.3 and it all works, maybe by newbie brain did something wrong with the first install.\n
\n
I’ll probably stick with Pop_OS as it does what I need and I quite like the Gnome interface.\n
\n
But again, thank you all for your input it’s awesome to know that swift help is available for idiots newbies like me.
+slug: "Linux-Newbie-Curiosity"
+title: "Linux Newbie - Curiosity"
+url: null
+body: """
I have an oldish Dell Latitude 7480 which doesn’t meet the requirements for upgrade to Windows 11 so I thought I’d take the opportunity to install Linux on it as I only really need it for day to day web stuff / studying / media and light gaming.\n
\n
My first choice was Linux Mint but, for some reason it would not recognise that the laptop had a wifi card. So I tried Manjaro but felt Arch wasn’t for me so opted for Pop_OS and whilst everything I want works I thought I’d use the time to distro hop live environments to see what else was out there.\n
\n
I know live envs doesn’t give you the full picture but to be honest I was more interested in the aesthetic appeal of the DE.\n
\n
Where my curiosity lies is this, from my understanding Linux Mint is based on underlying Ubuntu as is Pop_OS, so how come both Pop_OS and Ubuntu recognise the wi-fi card out of the box so to speak but Mint doesn’t.\n
\n
This is the wifi card in question:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> description: Wireless interface\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> product: Wireless 8265 / 8275\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> vendor: Intel Corporation\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> physical id: 0\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> logical name: wlp2s0\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> version: 78\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> serial: cc:2f:71:ec:52:b1\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> width: 64 bits\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> clock: 33MHz\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=6.6.6-76060606-generic firmware=36.ca7b901d.0 8265-36.ucode ip=192.168.1.6 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> resources: irq:131 memory:ec000000-ec001fff\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
> \n
\n
And with this in mind, does anyone have any idea how to get this wi-fi card working with Mint, I’m assuming I need a drive which the other drivers have but Mint, for whatever reason, doesn’t have.\n
\n
**Update:**\n
===========\n
\n
I thought it would be easier to edit the post than reply to you all individually and thanks to everyone who took the time to respond so quickly.\n
\n
I’ve just re-tried with the latest version 21.3 and it all works, maybe by newbie brain did something wrong with the first install.\n
\n
I’ll probably stick with Pop_OS as it does what I need and I quite like the Gnome interface.\n
\n
But again, thank you all for your input it’s awesome to know that swift help is available for idiots newbies like me.
+url: null
+body: """
Hello! I just installed jellyfin and wanted to access it with https. So, as I did yesterday for other apps (immich) in nginx proxy host I created a new proxy host, set the domain (jellyfin.mydomain.duckdns.org), set “create new SSL certificate”, “I agree on let’s encrypt stuff” and clicked save. Ports 80 and 443 are the only ports exposed on my router.\n
\n
After some loading, `internal error`. searching on the web I tried the followings:\n
\n
- tried with and without "force SSL"\n
- open port 81 on the router [[source](https://github.com/NginxProxyManager/nginx-proxy-manager/issues/3324)]\n
- checked `Use a DNS Challenge` as explained [here](https://community.home-assistant.io/t/unable-to-get-ssl-cert-from-nginx-proxy-manager-getting-internal-error/127990/22)\n
\n
Hi, I’m on Windows 10 at home and Windows 11 at work. I’m going to migrate to Linux for my next PC (might eventually do it on this one, though I’ve currently done so many tweaks that I intend to keep this for gaming for now). Our two laptops and mini-PC already run Linux Mint, but I digress… (I just don’t want anyone to think I’m totally unaware of the problems with Windows and Microsoft.)\n
\n
My uses for a webcam are:\n
\n
- Streaming with friends (sharing games and video feed, playing Jackbox games, chatting, etc.)\n
- Playing Magic the Gathering via Spelltable (so it needs to be able to be positioned facing my playmat and good enough quality to detect the cards)\n
- Video call with family and friends\n
- Occasional use for presenting professional webinars (during occasions when I have to work from home)\n
- Occasionally pre-recording work-related content that will be publicly viewable\n
- Use with OBS virtual camera\n
\n
At work, I use a Logitech camera that my employer provided me with OBS software. It’s an older model, but I’m not sure of model number or anything off the top of my head. It’s not the best, and I’d like something a bit better at home.\n
\n
At home, I was using a similar Logitech camera, but a year ago I decided to upgrade and purchased the Razer Kiyo Pro. *What a mistake!* Every time this camera gets plugged in, it prompts me to install Razer Synapse. It even puts the installer directly on my hard drive without my permission!\n
\n
I’ve saved up a bit, and I’d like to try again with a different camera, one that doesn’t push its proprietary software on me. I was considering Logitech, but iirc Logi’s newer models *also do the same thing.* Or is this wrong?\n
\n
**Either way, I’d be so grateful if someone could recommend a reasonably high quality budget camera in the ~$100 range. I *could* go up to maybe $125, but after that it would start to really hurt.**\n
\n
I’ve done a lot of searching myself, but it turns out it’s pretty hard to find a camera that doesn’t either require or constantly push its proprietary software, and apparently some people [checks notes] *like the proprietary software being shoved at them???*\n
\n
Anyway, I’d be so thankful if you could help. This community helped me so much before when I needed a modem and router to escape the clutches of my IP, so I thought maybe someone would have some advice.
+url: null
+body: """
Hi, I’m on Windows 10 at home and Windows 11 at work. I’m going to migrate to Linux for my next PC (might eventually do it on this one, though I’ve currently done so many tweaks that I intend to keep this for gaming for now). Our two laptops and mini-PC already run Linux Mint, but I digress… (I just don’t want anyone to think I’m totally unaware of the problems with Windows and Microsoft.)\n
\n
My uses for a webcam are:\n
\n
- Streaming with friends (sharing games and video feed, playing Jackbox games, chatting, etc.)\n
- Playing Magic the Gathering via Spelltable (so it needs to be able to be positioned facing my playmat and good enough quality to detect the cards)\n
- Video call with family and friends\n
- Occasional use for presenting professional webinars (during occasions when I have to work from home)\n
- Occasionally pre-recording work-related content that will be publicly viewable\n
- Use with OBS virtual camera\n
\n
At work, I use a Logitech camera that my employer provided me with OBS software. It’s an older model, but I’m not sure of model number or anything off the top of my head. It’s not the best, and I’d like something a bit better at home.\n
\n
At home, I was using a similar Logitech camera, but a year ago I decided to upgrade and purchased the Razer Kiyo Pro. *What a mistake!* Every time this camera gets plugged in, it prompts me to install Razer Synapse. It even puts the installer directly on my hard drive without my permission!\n
\n
I’ve saved up a bit, and I’d like to try again with a different camera, one that doesn’t push its proprietary software on me. I was considering Logitech, but iirc Logi’s newer models *also do the same thing.* Or is this wrong?\n
\n
**Either way, I’d be so grateful if someone could recommend a reasonably high quality budget camera in the ~$100 range. I *could* go up to maybe $125, but after that it would start to really hurt.**\n
\n
I’ve done a lot of searching myself, but it turns out it’s pretty hard to find a camera that doesn’t either require or constantly push its proprietary software, and apparently some people [checks notes] *like the proprietary software being shoved at them???*\n
\n
Anyway, I’d be so thankful if you could help. This community helped me so much before when I needed a modem and router to escape the clutches of my IP, so I thought maybe someone would have some advice.
Hello, I’m Italian and I’m reading what I understood to be a classic in American HIstory. I’m throug 100 pagesi in and I have the feeling that the author is a bit too partisan and unbalanced. Hence, I’m asking if someone out there knows another book about the same subjecst that is not at all celebratory toward America, actually I’m looking for a book that is very critic and severe toward America, but at the same time that is more balanced. Any advice?\n
+url: null
+body: """
Per title: apparently there’s no way to set the water volume used by my DeLonghi espresso machine on the TM BM 2…??\n
\n
I saw one of the YouTube baristas use the Timemore BM 2 to dial in his espressos. I found the pour over option an extra bonus for when the mood hits so I saved up and bought it.\n
\n
Primarily, I want to dial in espresso. But I can’t figure out how it determines extraction ratios if it doesn’t know how much water was used (and thus, how much water is retained). I can set EVERYTHING it feels, but the water volume or weight I used…\n
\n
Help? 😅\n
\n
Edit: The scale and app show a lot of variables, like extraction rate. Yes, I’m just starting out so I could be asking very dumb questions here.\n
\n
I can set some variables like grams of coffee used, temperature, etc. But I cannot set how much water was used. Say, my De’longhi La Specialista uses 30ml of water for each shot. Is there an option to enter that in the black mirror app? That way, it could give the correct extraction ratios, no? Now, to me, it feels like it’s just throwing out numbers. Of course, flow rate graphs and total weight etc are correct.\n
\n
Thanks!!
+url: null
+body: """
Per title: apparently there’s no way to set the water volume used by my DeLonghi espresso machine on the TM BM 2…??\n
\n
I saw one of the YouTube baristas use the Timemore BM 2 to dial in his espressos. I found the pour over option an extra bonus for when the mood hits so I saved up and bought it.\n
\n
Primarily, I want to dial in espresso. But I can’t figure out how it determines extraction ratios if it doesn’t know how much water was used (and thus, how much water is retained). I can set EVERYTHING it feels, but the water volume or weight I used…\n
\n
Help? 😅\n
\n
Edit: The scale and app show a lot of variables, like extraction rate. Yes, I’m just starting out so I could be asking very dumb questions here.\n
\n
I can set some variables like grams of coffee used, temperature, etc. But I cannot set how much water was used. Say, my De’longhi La Specialista uses 30ml of water for each shot. Is there an option to enter that in the black mirror app? That way, it could give the correct extraction ratios, no? Now, to me, it feels like it’s just throwing out numbers. Of course, flow rate graphs and total weight etc are correct.\n
\n
Thanks!!
I have a google pixel, and I know I could install grapheneOS on it. But I’m very, very hesitant, since I depend so much on my phone.\n
This isn’t like distro hopping, where I feel more comfortable hot swapping ssds, or making partitions, or using my desktop while I tinker with my laptop. My phone has a SIM and the service I depend on can’t be emulated off this phone.\n
So what do you recommend I do? Should I move my SIM (my phone service, really) to a new phone while I tinker with this one? Can I just blow up the current OS and wing it? EDIT: how I use my phone: about everything I use is from fdroid, with the occassional app from aurora. I do use my banking app to cash checks, but I don’t use whatsapp, google pay, which I know arent compatible. +url: null
+body: """
I’ve been researching NAS and am figuring out how one can play into my current home setup. There’s a lot I don’t know even after researching. Best I explain to clear things up.\n
\n
Currently, I have a home server running NextCloud, accessible only via my LAN network. It’s run along with a VPN on a Raspberry Pi 4B running Ubuntu Server. The data is on two 512 GiB external SSD drives. One drive is primary & the other is backup of the primary drive via rsync each day.\n
\n
I’m looking at a NAS for more backups (Ex. 1 day, 3 days, & 1 week at least) since I have sensitive data on the drives. I want to feel more secure about my home setup with the ability to rollback changes if I mess up something. I also want the NAS to be able to run more services other than just NextCloud eventually, like Grocy/KitchenOwl, etc.\n
\n
I have some more questions about NAS given my info:\n
\n
- Do I have to use a special NAS-specific OS to make use of the NAS hardware? Like to do snapshots and stuff?\n
- Kinda related: what if I install something like Debian/Ubuntu on it? Can I still use the NAS hardware in the same way?\n
\n
I looked into some solutions like TrueNAS and Synology. I prefer an OS that’s free software so I have control over what I’m doing and not held hostage if they want to increase prices, force upgrades, enshittify things, etc.
+body: """
I’ve been researching NAS and am figuring out how one can play into my current home setup. There’s a lot I don’t know even after researching. Best I explain to clear things up.\n
\n
Currently, I have a home server running NextCloud, accessible only via my LAN network. It’s run along with a VPN on a Raspberry Pi 4B running Ubuntu Server. The data is on two 512 GiB external SSD drives. One drive is primary & the other is backup of the primary drive via rsync each day.\n
\n
I’m looking at a NAS for more backups (Ex. 1 day, 3 days, & 1 week at least) since I have sensitive data on the drives. I want to feel more secure about my home setup with the ability to rollback changes if I mess up something. I also want the NAS to be able to run more services other than just NextCloud eventually, like Grocy/KitchenOwl, etc.\n
\n
I have some more questions about NAS given my info:\n
\n
- Do I have to use a special NAS-specific OS to make use of the NAS hardware? Like to do snapshots and stuff?\n
- Kinda related: what if I install something like Debian/Ubuntu on it? Can I still use the NAS hardware in the same way?\n
\n
I looked into some solutions like TrueNAS and Synology. I prefer an OS that’s free software so I have control over what I’m doing and not held hostage if they want to increase prices, force upgrades, enshittify things, etc.
Let’s take https connection for example. I like watching revolutionary things on youtube and do not wish for authorities to know what I am watching, we accept here for the sake of showcase that google won’t sell my watch history if asked (LMAO what am I even saying?). \n
So if I’m not mistaken since youtube has https implemented, our communication is encrypted, the keys are shared only between me and youtube. But when Youtube shares the key with me/my client the first time, is that also encrypted? Wouldn’t the same question keep getting answered until there is something unencrypted? I know this is a bit too much unlikely, but if ISP automated the process of gathering keys and decrypting web traffic for a certain site with them for all users, would that work for them? \n
Hello selfhosters,\n
I recently moved to a new place with faster internet (320/130 Mbps) and now I see that VPN is limiting my torrent speed.\n
\n
I was testing multiple AirVPN (wireguard) servers and I’m getting 80-120 Mbps on speedtest-cli, but in torrents it goes bit higher to about 180-200 Mbps. I usually use it trought gluetun container, but was also testing with eddie-cli and I get pretty much the same results.\n
I was reading that people get 600 Mbps and even 1+ Gbps on AirVPN. What is your experience? If this is AirVPN limit, what would you suggest as alternative with port forwarding to saturate my bandwidth? I can live with these speeds, just want to check if there is better alternative or something missconfigured on my side.\n
Hello selfhosters,\n
\n
I recently moved to a new place with faster internet (320/130 Mbps) and now I see that VPN is limiting my torrent speed.\n
\n
I was testing multiple AirVPN (wireguard) servers and I’m getting 80-120 Mbps on speedtest-cli, but in torrents it goes bit higher to about 180-200 Mbps. I usually use it trought gluetun container, but was also testing with eddie-cli and I get pretty much the same results.\n
\n
I was reading that people get 600 Mbps and even 1+ Gbps on AirVPN. What is your experience? If this is AirVPN limit, what would you suggest as alternative with port forwarding to saturate my bandwidth? I can live with these speeds, just want to check if there is better alternative or something missconfigured on my side.\n
\n
Cheers
