Since as far as I can recall, Wacom\u2019s kinda been the leader, and if someone was going to be doing serious freehand artwork, I suspect that that\u2019s probably where I\u2019d recommend going.<\/p>\\n<p>My favorite drawing software would depend a very great deal on what the task is.<\/p>\\n<p><strong>Natural-media<\/strong><\/p>\\n<p>I used to be interested in watercolor simulation, read research papers on it.  I have not been blown away by what software I\u2019ve seen that tries to simulate the physical interactions of watercolor paint has managed to do.  Less interested in simulation of ink drawings, but I\u2019ve played with natural-media software that tries to simulate it.  Again, not blown away.<\/p>\\n<p>In 2025, if I wanted to make something that looked like a watercolor or most other forms of natural media, I\u2019d probably use a generative AI, maybe start with an image and rely on the generative AI to simulate the natural media effect.  I don\u2019t think that computer simulations of natural-media painting that I\u2019ve seen are as effective.<\/p>\\n<p>If I were required to do it freehand myself, given that I don\u2019t have any proprietary Windows natural-media digital painting software sitting around and last I looked \u2014 a very long time ago \u2014 that was probably the most-sophisticated, I\u2019d probably use <a href=\\\"https:\/\/krita.org\/en\/\\\" rel=\\\"nofollow\\\"><em>Krita<\/em><\/a>.  I generally prefer <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\\\" rel=\\\"nofollow\\\"><em>Gimp<\/em><\/a> for image manipulation stuff, but <em>Krita<\/em> has, as I recall, more natural-media stuff.<\/p>\\n<p><strong>Pretty much anything else done by hand and raster<\/strong><\/p>\\n<p><a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.gimp.org\/\\\" rel=\\\"nofollow\\\"><em>Gimp<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\\n<p><strong>Vector, freehand or manually-placed elements<\/strong><\/p>\\n<p><a href=\\\"https:\/\/inkscape.org\/\\\" rel=\\\"nofollow\\\"><em>Inkscape<\/em><\/a>.  I\u2019ve never done anything meaningful freehand in it, though, and never used a tablet with it, so I have no idea what support is like.  I imagine that it probably can generate paths with variable-width depending upon tilt and pressure and stuff, though.  I\u2019ve used it to lay out vector graphics with a mouse, and it\u2019s been fine for what it is.<\/p>\\n<p><strong>Vector, technical 3D stuff<\/strong><\/p>\\n<p><em>Blender<\/em>, if it wasn\u2019t something intended for the actual real world.
