Hello evryone, I need help with this annoying problem where I can’t connect to some specific wifi even though I’m entering the correct password.\n
\n
I went to a coffee house near my in-laws for some alone time where I got this annoying problem again. I was able to connect normally to their wifi (TP VSTM) using my phone but not on my laptop. So I made a QR image of that wifi (on my phone while connecting to it) and read it online (on my laptop) to make sure I’m entering the correct password. I tried connecting using nmtui at first but it kept prompting me to re-enter the password, then using nmcli which showed a message about a secret not provided.\n

The log shows :\n

but I didn’t get any prompt other than the one asking my root password for connecting.\n

I am worried that externally caused vibrations might damage my HDDs (NAS in the planning). The subway / metro runs under my building, and every time the train passes, this causes slight but measurable vibrations in the 50-100 Hz frequency range. It is more like a rumbling noise than the usual vibration of a passing train.\n
\n
I’ve been researching the topic of vibration dampening on and off, and things like sorbothane popped up in my search. I also remember finding foam plates in an eye scorching yellow material.\n
\n
My plan is to set up the case, fire up a measuring app on my phone (say phybox or the like) and test a few options. But I figured, I can’t be the first person to be guarding against outside vibrations. :D\n
\n
Other than the usual 3-2-1 and backup regularly, what can I actually do? I would like to make sure that the lifespan of the HDDs doesn’t get too negatively impacted, so the chances of a catastrophic failure, as well as having to invest 1k EUR every couple of years is reduced as much as possible. Thanks!

Most posts from what I see are now ‘’meme’s’’, ‘‘I justify pirate because…’’ and ‘’This is my collection!’’. Pretty much just hurr-durr look and upvote me kind of content.\n

Actual content to help with problems, discussions (besides, I justify it because) are not there.\n

I know this is kind of an ironic because, this post isn’t necessarily a helpful thing either. So apologies for that.\n

the same logic can be applied to ms excel , powerpoint etc. but i dont see the point after using libreoffice (literally the best thing ever)

From the options that I have been considering the contabo ( my vps provider ) storage expansion are quite costly so I have been thinking about hetzner storage boxes or a backblaze b2 bucket mounted with rclone/s3fs.\n

The problem with backblaze is that I use hardlinks with my *arr suite so to save up on space so I’m not sure if I can mount them preserving the hard links.\n

I tried to sign up for this instance, but my signup is still stuck in “processing”. I tried signing up with a different username & email, and I got a popup that said sign ups are closed. I got no response to anything.\n

I noticed that the instance was updated to 0.19.0, but not 0.19.1 that came soon after and fixed some problems with the .19 release.\n

I haven’t seen any posts/updates from Jonah since the update, and it seems like he has abandoned the instance. I really wanted to move here, but it doesn’t seem like it’s being maintained, and that’s disappointing.

+title: "Planning build: Power efficient headless steam machine, and later upgrade for AI tasks"
+url: null
+body: """
### **Background**\n
\n
I’m planning on building a secondary server that can process more intense tasks than my current basic home server. Tasks such as light gaming (think “remote Steam Deck”), and later allowed to be upgraded with a Nvidia graphics card to handle AI tasks, such as LLM and SD.\n
\n
### **The problem**\n
\n
While I have no problem picking parts to build this as a “desktop computer”, **I’m completely lost when trying to make it power efficient for idle load (if it’s even possible with a power-hungry Nvidia card).** I’d appreciate some guidance even if it’s not a full parts list suggestion!\n
\n
Watching [Wolfgang’s videos](https://piped.kavin.rocks/channel/UCsnGwSIHyoYN0kiINAGUKxg) has unfortunately not translated knowledge into practice for me yet. At least I know TDP isn’t an absolute determining factor anymore.\n
\n
---\n
\n
### **Planning the build**\n
\n
Due to a limited budget, the idea is split the build in 2 phases.\n
\n
#### Phase 1 (gaming):\n
\n
- Budget: $1000 (ideally below ~$800):\n
- Use for local headless gaming (with [bazzite](https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite)?)\n
- At least as powerful as a Steam Deck\n
- Parts: \n
- APU: \n
- Perhaps: "AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D ($400)"\n
- or “AMD Ryzen 5 7600X ($300)”?\n
- Motherboard: \n
- No specific requirement, will mainly just use the PCIe x16 slot for a single GPU when upgrading in “phase 2”.\n
- Okay with gigabit ethernet and basic I/O.\n
- Power supply: \n
- Power efficient power supply that can handle a class 4080/4090 card.\n
- Cooling: \n
- Air-cooled preferred\n
- Storage: \n
- Samsung 990 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB (~$100)\n
- RAM: \n
- Corsair Vengeance LPX Black DDR4 3200MHz 2x16GB (~$70)\n
- Case: \n
- As long as it fits a large graphics card\n
\n
#### Phase 2 (AI: LLM/SD):\n
\n
- Budget: ~$2000\n
- After 1-2 years, upgrade with Nvidia graphics card. \n
- Ideally something with 24GB VRAM, like the 4090.\n
- Prefer Nvidia due to compatibility with SD.\n
- Open for suggestion, since wanting a low power draw with a 4090 might sound contradictory.\n
\n

\n
In case I missed any crucial information, let me know!

\n

[This guide](https://opensource.com/article/19/1/basic-live-video-streaming-server) was quite comprehensive; however the packages for nginx-rtmp are quite abandoned in arch linux. I’m using a Protectli FW6B as my opnsense firewall/router. I’m upgrading my internet service to 1.5 GB fiber and I’m not sure what to do with this device once I do. I could continue using it as my router (I guess put it on the LAN side of the supplied Bell “Gigahub” router/WiFi ap/whatever the fiber equivalent of a modem is?) but then I lose out on 1/3 of my bandwidth.\n
\n
I already have a homebuilt NAS running truenas with a bunch of services - I guess I could move all those services from truenas onto the Protectli and keep the NAS solely as a storage system?\n
\n
Either that or just sell it to recupe the costs somewhat. I’m already considering selling my ruckus 510s because the new router comes with WiFi 6. If I did that, I’d probably look to sell the 2x ruckus r510 aps I have setup too.\n

Is there another option I’m missing?

Hi! My less-than-10-year-old has their own iPad (registered under my apple id) and wants to be able to “text” with the rest of the family. Most of us are not Apple people though: Android phones, using some combo of SMS, Discord, and Signal. The little one doesn’t have a phone, so I think that prevents us from signing them up for Signal. I could probably install Discord on the iPad, though it doesn’t feel ideal. They use iMessage (or whatever it’s called) to text a couple other friends/grandma/etc who also have Apple stuff, but what should we use for our mostly-non-Apple family that wouldn’t require a phone number?\n
\n
An internet search pointed me to WhatsApp, Telegram, Viber… stuff I’ve never used but it seems popular. Facebook Messenger also, but screw that. Google Chat/Hangouts (or whatever it’s called now) is another option, which would require creating a google account.\n
\n
If nothing else appeals to me we’ll probably go the Discord route, and I’ll just have to be clear, don’t join random servers :) But, anybody out there use WhatsApp with your kid, and does it not require a phone number? I’m open to other ideas! Thank you…

I’m a novice Linux user. Comfortable with command line but far from a whiz. Have to duckduckgo a lot of stuff to figure out what I’m doing.\n

I just bought a WD EX2 Ultra. The Plex app is built in, but it looks like the other stuff I want to do will require Docker containers. Maybe I just need to devote more time to learning containers but, at first look, it all seems quite daunting.\n

Here’s what I want to set up. Jellyfin for music, tv & movies. Audiobookshelf for podcasts. The Servarr suite for library collection and management. VPN for security and privacy.\n

Am I swinging too big for my skill level, or does this seem doable? Any suggestions on how to proceed? Any and all feedback is welcome!
