+slug: "What-can-a-person-replace-tv-shows-movies-and-other"
+title: "What can a person replace tv shows, movies, and other zombie-brain entertainment with? How can attention span be improved?"
+url: null
+body: """
As part of my endless and possibly futile quest to be a less pathetic version of myself, I’ve embarked on a campaign to stop watching TV and movies. For me it’s low hanging fruit - some people really love movies, but I honestly can’t remember the last time I watched something that I truly enjoyed. It’s just something to fill dead time when I’m too tired to think. It BOTHERS me that I’ve spent so many hours mindlessly watching shows that I didn’t even like. I feel like I’m wasting my life every time I watch TV.\n
\n
I’ve tried reading and podcasts with limited success. They’re good to a point, but the type of content I like is usually either pretty heavy or requires some thought (philosophy, human rights, law, etc. are my areas of interest), and I’m increasingly having trouble with my attention span too.\n
\n
I already cancelled Netflix a long time ago, but I just never found a good replacement for it. Usually I find myself doomscrolling or watching the same few movies I already own or playing chess on my phone. I decided when I started that I’d let myself finish watching the shows I already followed, but just wouldn’t expose myself to any new ones.
Now one of the last two shows that I had been following has been cancelled (which is understandable, the last season was AWFUL) and the other won’t have a new season for a while because of the strike (go strikers), so I’d really like to make TV and movies a non-factor in my life.\n

So I’m looking for advice here. What other activities are less of a waste of valuable time but not mentally tasking? Has anyone had success improving their attention span? If you contact the customer support of your utility company, phone carrier, bank, or other service provider you’ll likely be flooded with requests to rate the experience and provide feedback. Likewise, corporate websites and email communications often solicit feedback via embedded buttons or links to online forms.\n
\n
What’s with this corporate obsession with customer feedback?\n
\n
Are these huge piles of feedback actually analyzed and acted upon? Is customer feedback some sort of corporate cargo cult? Or maybe clever marketing by vendors of feedback tools and services?\n
\n
The impression is the feedback is just discarded or ignored.

+body: "Can I use Google Play without a SIM card? I listen to audiobooks and don’t want to drain the battery on my personal phone so was going to buy a mini android and download Libby onto it and use that for listening to audiobooks but I don’t want to buy one if that won’t work. I have searched for my answer and can’t really find anything. Once I have Libby on it I can just use my wifi so won’t ever have to use a sim card. I only want Libby (free books through library) not audible. Thanks for any help!"

I tend to miss posts in smaller communities, no matter what sorting options I use when I display the “Subscribed” feed on the frontpage.\n
\n
If I sort by “New”, unsurprisingly most new posts are on the popular communities. Same if I select “Hot”, “Active”, or “Top Hour” etc. Overall it makes sense, small communities don’t have new content as often, and threads there are not that “active” as there not many users.\n
\n
I think the algorithm should somehow ensure a more diverse feed. There also no “multi-reddits” atm, so you can’t just create a feed of those smaller communities.\n
\n
Of course, I could create another account and only subscribe to small communities, but that’s inconvenient. Simply checking them manually is what I do atm, but it’s also not that convenient. A temporal solution might be using the RSS feeds, but overall it seems something should be done about it on Lemmy’s end.\n
\n
So, anyone else experiencing that or am I missing something? Because if I am not the only one then perhaps this issue should be brought to the attention of the devs (if it wasn’t already).

+url: null
+body: """
Hi, well to start I usually feed any cat that came to my house, and a pregnant cat start coming around 2 months ago but unlike the others cat, she remained on my yard and basically she lives here.\n
\n
At some point, when I realized that she was pregnant, I started to lock her on my house where she can give birth and be safe.\n
\n
Just some 3 days ago, she gave birth to 2 completely black kittens (she is black with white points) and one white kitten with black points. But when I was looking closely at the white kitten, I realize that he had fleas, and obviously all the kittens and the mother have, but they are too dark to watch the fleas.\n
\n
I read that an easy way to remove the fleas is bathing the kitten, but ironically I also read that if a person touches a kitten too much, the mother can stop recognizing it by its smell, and even eat it, without mentioning that they are only 3 days old, so I guess that this is not an option.\n
\n
I also read that fleas abhor the smell of chamomile tea, so I could do a bit and rub a bit over the kittens without bathing them, but I don’t know if what I mentioned in the previous point also applies.\n
\n
For the mother, I don’t think I have to worry, because I’ll buy her a pipette,\n
\n
I also want to clarify that the kittens are not infested with fleas, maybe they have 5 or 10, but they are 3 kittens that sleep one on top of the other, and I prefer to be safe rather than sorry.\n
\n
(Sorry if this is not the correct place to ask such a question, but I couldn’t find an “AskVet” alternative on Lemmy)

A bot-driven site, providing a daily list of Communities trending across the LemmyVerse, determined by growth in subscribers.\n
\n
Some people have already discovered it (meaning it’s currently featuring on its own list!), but I always intended to post on here once the bot had been running for a few days. Now that it has, it can average daily growth over the previous days, to better highlight consistent growth (vs. a random spurt in popularity).\n
\n
It’s early days, but I think it’s already illustrating some interesting things: e.g. the popularity of table-top RPGs on Lemmy, the kick that “Accidental Renaissance” got from Reddit migrants, or how the sudden investment in “Antiques Memes Roadshow” threatened to break the “All” feed. There’s also appearances from Communities that featured here, so it’ll be intriguing to see if the likes of “Deal Malls” can stay on the list (tune in tomorrow to find out …).\n
\n
There’s also a “NSFW” version (see the link in the sidebar), and a post to discuss suggestions for improving the algorithm and how the results are displayed.\n

**Update**: The guide on github has been updated and has addopted a different method. Notably, it: A) still accomplishing my goal of avoiding running the process inside as root. B) uses the linuxserver.io image rather than the syncthing/syncthing one (my method does not allow for the linuxserver.io image to run), the linuxserver one is based on alpine, I truly forget what the other one is based on.\n
\n
An archived version of the guide I followed to create my setup has been placed bellow, the updated (and all subsequent version) can be found [here](https://mmarco94.github.io/linux-guides/immutable-os/syncthing)\n
\n
I saw [this guide](https://web.archive.org/web/20220613082829/https://mmarco94.github.io/linux-guides/immutable-os/syncthing) discussing how to run Syncthing in a podman container on immutable OSes and decided to try and create a better solution that avoids running the process inside as root. I am new to podman and it’s been a few years since I used docker so I am a novice in this side of system administration and I guess I am writing this as a “sanity check” for what I have done.\n
\n
Below is the podman run arguments I used in place of the ones found in the article, I also manage it with systemd as shown in the article.\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">podman run -d \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --name=syncthing \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --hostname=syncpod \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --label io.containers.autoupdate=registry \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --userns keep-id \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 127.0.0.1:8384:8384 \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 22000:22000/tcp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 22000:22000/udp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 21027:21027/udp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/.config/syncthing:/var/syncthing/config:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/SyncedDirs/:/SyncedDirs:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/SyncedDirs2/:/var/syncthing/SyncedDirs2:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> docker.io/syncthing/syncthing:latest\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
*Note: I feel the original guide does *not* explain what the :Z flag does very well, it should at least emphasize unknowing users that it is telling podman to change the SELinux label of a dir to match that of the container.*\n
\n
The notable changes in my arguments is the `–userns keep-id` option and switching from the linuxserver.io version to the syncthing image. The keep-id option from my understanding tells Podman to create a user namespace where the user and container map to the same UID:GID values. Allowing all files the container touches to still be used by me, the user. I had to switch from the linuxserver.io version to the syncthing official one because the former did not allow the `–userns keep-id` option to work (perhaps because it is based on Alpine Linux? I have to investigate more. It failed on running an add-user command if I recall)\n
\n
*Below is an excerpt from a RedHat article describing the `–userns keep-id` option, square brackets are mine:*\n
\n
User namespace modes\n
--------------------\n
\n
I can change this default mapping using the –userns option, which is described in the podman run man page. This list shows the different modes you can pass to the –userns option.\n
\n
- Key: “” (Unset) [Effectively what the original guide did]\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> Host user: $UID\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Container user: 0 (Default User account mapped to root user in container.) (Default)\n
</span>\n
```\n
- Key: keep-id [What I am doing]\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> Host user: $UID\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Container user: $UID (Map user account to the same UID within the container.)\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
[(Source)](https://www.redhat.com/sysadmin/rootless-podman-user-namespace-modes)\n
\n
So far this method seems to work quite well, and has replaced the `syncthing` package I had layered for a while. Is this the best way to run it on an OS like Silverblue / Kinoite, or is there a more sensible route to go? Any feedback is appreciated!\n
\n
Edit: Clarity and grammar, and some more detail in a few spots.

\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">podman run -d \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --name=syncthing \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --hostname=syncpod \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --label io.containers.autoupdate=registry \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> --userns keep-id \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 127.0.0.1:8384:8384 \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 22000:22000/tcp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 22000:22000/udp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -p 21027:21027/udp \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/.config/syncthing:/var/syncthing/config:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/SyncedDirs/:/SyncedDirs:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> -v ~/SyncedDirs2/:/var/syncthing/SyncedDirs2:Z \n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> docker.io/syncthing/syncthing:latest\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> Host user: $UID\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Container user: 0 (Default User account mapped to root user in container.) (Default)\n
</span>\n
```\n
- Key: keep-id [What I am doing]\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;"> Host user: $UID\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> Container user: $UID (Map user account to the same UID within the container.)\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n

\n
So far this method seems to work quite well, and has replaced the `syncthing` package I had layered for a while. Is this the best way to run it on an OS like Silverblue / Kinoite, or is there a more sensible route to go? Any feedback is appreciated!\n
