Here's a shorter story of malicious compliance, again from when I was working front desk at a value/budget motel.\n

After working at a front desk for a while, you get used to all kinds of guest interactions and don't take it to heart. Some guests are more talkative, some are just curt. I never get bothered either way. I know some people came off a long drive and just want to sleep, and don't particularly want to talk to me, that's fine.\n

During check-in, I have a standard script that I use for every guest. It depends on the hotel, but it's always something like "Here's 2 copies of the room key, turn the key clockwise, it sticks a little so wiggle it a bit. Your room is on the left/right of this corridor. The ice machine is down that corridor. Breakfast is available from 7am-10am at the lobby, check-out time is 11am. You can adjust the heat in your room using the knob on the wall, but please don't leave the windows open while running the heat."\n

I usually say all that while holding on to the room key, and then hold out the room key and offer it to the guest once I'm done. However, I had this one guest who seemed to be in a particular hurry and did not want to listen to my script. So to explain it, it works when the mosfet is irradiated with an external radiation source; its voltage threshold increases, which will be used to determine the radiation dose. I'm currently asking for help on how we measure the voltage threshold. BTW, we are using an n-channel MOSFET (model: IRFP250NPbF). Also in the datasheet provided by the manufacturer, it says here VGS(th)/Gate Threshold Voltage Min: 2.0 ––– Max: 4.0 V. There is a condition here with VDS = VGS, ID = 250 A. Does this mean that to measure the VGS, we need to first satisfy the conditions? To measure the voltage threshold, what node will we use to measure the VGS (th)? Is it at the drain to the source terminal or still at the gate to the source terminal? Feel free to share your thoughts, if you have any. I would also like to add that we have already tried to supply a voltage at the gate with respect to the source terminal. We use a 4 V supply voltage, and when we tried to measure the VDS (drain to source voltage), there was a voltage drop, so we've got a 3.5 V. Also, we are using an Arduino to measure its voltage and a multimeter for checking."

The advisor comes to let me know, and I pull the car out and put the work order and keys back on the counter.\n

Half an hour passes. The apprentice is still away, and I am happily working on something else, bringing other cars in and out.\n

The customer is now watching each and every person who comes through the door.\n
\n
The high school co-op student comes in to get something signed. The customer’s keys are still sitting on the desk. It’s been about an hour now.\n
\n
C: “Hey— why hasn’t my car gone in yet? Can’t you get this guy to do it?”\n
\n
A: “No, sorry. He’s just a co-op student so he is not allowed to drive the cars due to liability and insurance concerns.”\n
\n
C: “Just get someone else to bring the car in and he can do the work. This was supposed to take 10 minutes.”\n
\n
A: “Sorry, sir. He’s just a high school student doing his co-op; he’s not approved to perform warranty work. Only licensed techs and apprentices can do the recall.”\n
\n
The car jockey returns. The advisor hands the car jockey a different set of keys, and he brings yet another car into the shop for me. The customer is becoming incensed.\n

C: “I’ve been sitting here for over an hour and I’ve watched 5 cars go in before mine. My appointment was for 8am, this is getting ridiculous,” blah blah blah.\n

At this point he says that he literally doesn’t care who does the recall, but that it has to be a guy.\n

The service advisor starts listing off the names of the men who work in the dealership, then saying why they can’t perform the recall.\n

“Well there’s Harmon, but he’s just the car jockey. He doesn’t know how to work on cars. Then there’s Jeet, but he’s about 17. I wouldn’t want him doing the recall, personally. I guess we could ask Mike— but Mike is the parts guy— he doesn’t know how to use the scan tool. The detailers are men, but they know NOTHING about cars… ”\n

The customer is fuming at this point, and demands to talk to the service manager.\n

The manager comes out of his office, and guides the customer into the garage. He’s pretty old school… lights up a cigarette standing at the end of my bay, and points at me.\n

“That’s my best technician. Those guys take orders from her. You can either wait for her to finish what she’s working on, and then you can ask if she’s still willing to do your work, or you can take your car somewhere else.”\n

The guy was pretty shook up at this point and he took his car and left, two hours after he’d first arrived. I don’t think we ever saw him again, which was not much of a loss, all things considered.\n

[REPOST] Many years ago, I worked at a car dealership. The attached service garage was small and I was the only licensed mechanic.\n

I would occasionally have issues with male customers— they would second guess my diagnoses, watch me while I worked on their cars from the bay door, double check my work in the parking lot, etc.\n

I didn’t deal with customers directly and would often get my apprentice to pull cars in and out of the shop for me.\n

This morning in particular, we were busy. The lot jockey and apprentice were occupied helping wash cars for delivery and driving to a customer’s house.\n

The service advisor left a work order and keys at the parts counter, and I went out the front through service to get the car. It was in for a service campaign, which was an update done with a scan tool. It takes about 10 minutes.\n
\n
The customer was planning on waiting and was sitting in service. When he saw me with his keys in my hand, he immediately stood up, alarmed. I was hustling so I walked right by him and out the door. I missed the following conversation, according to the service advisor (also female):\n

Customer: “Who is that chick? Is she going to be working on my car? I don’t want her working on my car.”\n
\n
Advisor: “The other tech is out at the moment, so it’s going to be quite a wait until someone else can look at your car.”\n
\n
C: “That’s fine. I’ll wait for a guy. I don’t want that chick touching my car.”\n
\n
A, politely: “Understood.”\n
\n
*Cue malicious compliance.*\n
\n
The advisor comes to let me know, and I pull the car out and put the work order and keys back on the counter.\n
\n
Half an hour passes. The apprentice is still away, and I am happily working on something else, bringing other cars in and out.\n
\n
The customer is now watching each and every person who comes through the door.\n
\n
The high school co-op student comes in to get something signed. The customer’s keys are still sitting on the desk. It’s been about an hour now.\n
\n
C: “Hey— why hasn’t my car gone in yet? Can’t you get this guy to do it?”\n
\n
A: “No, sorry. He’s just a co-op student so he is not allowed to drive the cars due to liability and insurance concerns.”\n
\n
C: “Just get someone else to bring the car in and he can do the work. This was supposed to take 10 minutes.”\n
\n
A: “Sorry, sir. He’s just a high school student doing his co-op; he’s not approved to perform warranty work. Only licensed techs and apprentices can do the recall.”\n
\n
The car jockey returns. The advisor hands the car jockey a different set of keys, and he brings yet another car into the shop for me. The customer is becoming incensed.\n
\n
C: “I’ve been sitting here for over an hour and I’ve watched 5 cars go in before mine. My appointment was for 8am, this is getting ridiculous,” blah blah blah.\n
\n
At this point he says that he literally doesn’t care who does the recall, but that it has to be a guy.\n
\n
The service advisor starts listing off the names of the men who work in the dealership, then saying why they can’t perform the recall.\n
\n
“Well there’s Harmon, but he’s just the car jockey. He doesn’t know how to work on cars. Then there’s Jeet, but he’s about 17. I wouldn’t want him doing the recall, personally. I guess we could ask Mike— but Mike is the parts guy— he doesn’t know how to use the scan tool. The detailers are men, but they know NOTHING about cars… ”\n
\n
The customer is fuming at this point, and demands to talk to the service manager.\n
\n
The manager comes out of his office, and guides the customer into the garage. He’s pretty old school… lights up a cigarette standing at the end of my bay, and points at me.\n
\n
“That’s my best technician. Those guys take orders from her. You can either wait for her to finish what she’s working on, and then you can ask if she’s still willing to do your work, or you can take your car somewhere else.”\n
\n
The guy was pretty shook up at this point and he took his car and left, two hours after he’d first arrived. I don’t think we ever saw him again, which was not much of a loss, all things considered.\n
\n
That manager in particular ALWAYS stuck up for me and took my side. The service advisor has this very dead-pan sense of humour. She knew full well it would easily be an hour before the apprentice would return from his errand, and that no one else could do the recall.\n

**TL;DR: A customer brought his car in to the shop but when he saw me with his keys asked for a man to do the job instead. The service advisor happily agreed knowing full well there was no one but me to do the job. The customer ended up waiting two hours before leaving without getting his car fixed.**

+body: "I used to be fit, running, cycling, partner acrobatics, etc. But I have done very little cardio, strength, or flexibility training since our wonderful daughter came along. She doesn’t sleep well so part of the problem is energy. But the main issue is finding time. My partner and I both work remotely, I have a 08:00-16:30 tech job and my partner teaches music online in the evenings. So I’m either working, playing with my daughter, or exhausted. I’m not complaining, I love my life and being a dad. I want to stay fit and healthy so I can be my daughter’s father for as long as possible. I also don’t want to be hard on myself, I know these toddler years will fly past if I’m not mindful. How do other parents maintain fitness? We don’t have any extended family close."

She doesn’t sleep well so part of the problem is energy. But the main issue is finding time. My partner and I both work remotely, I have a 08:00-16:30 tech job and my partner teaches music online in the evenings. So I’m either working, playing with my daughter, or exhausted. I’m not complaining, I love my life and being a dad. I want to stay fit and healthy so I can be my daughter’s father for as long as possible. I also don’t want to be hard on myself, I know these toddler years will fly past if I’m not mindful. How do other parents maintain fitness? We don’t have any extended family close."

More than just the question I want to explain a thought that led me to this topic. **How often do we play?**\n

I mean, we are usually entertained, whether scrolling, watching some content, making silly jokes, and shit like that, but is it an actual play?\n

I was just kind of playing a sort of Q&A game with my wife, basically I was just asking her random questions and recording them in Notes as if it was an interview. It was super fun and we ended up with basically a log full of both funny and interesting questions&answers and intimate stuff. It was just interesting to think about questions and for her to think about answers. We felt pretty connected this time and it costed us 0.00$.\n

Now, compare that to the usual forms of “entertainment” we usually just “consume”: mindless scrolling interrupted by ads, clickbait videos, movies and series, porn, videogames with set rules and competition, “going out” (which is mostly purchasing a burger or other services). Usually it either costs money (which sometimes means you need to employ someone else for a while) or it has set rules and we do it for some competitive, compulsive interest -like winning something or farming karma.\n

Idk but all this I previously mentioned makes me feel addicted, guilty, fooled and even dirty 90% of the time, and in the end it is a loss of autonomy. I don’t even really enjoy most of that shit. But when I’m really playing or doing something creatively, I feel genuinely liberated and connected to others, not just relaxed or soothed from whatever impulse.\n

I just realized this is the kind of stuff I liked when I was falling in love with my wife, having conversations about life, dreams, knowing each other. I also recalled how common was to **really play** when I was a child. I mean using my imagination, being creative, whether alone or connecting with other people, and I just think socialization and maturity grabbed that away from me. And I am under the impression that before mass media, mass entertainment, etc. play was more common **at all ages**. Probably the introduction of wage labour also destroyed the habit of playing to a greater extent since of course farm work was not as inhumane as the long hours at factories.\n

I also think sports are a form of playing, but it’s not quite the same because there is usually an interest outside the play itself (like the pride on winning a competition and stuff) and the set rules means the focus is not in creativity and free expression but in performing, but I think it is a way more autonomous than other forms of entertainment such as watching the NFL or something.\n

And to finish, think about the next generation, aren’t they playing less than the kids from previous years? They “play” using apps or watching YouTube, and I am also under the impression that physical activity or imagination whether alone or with other kids might be compromised if they are being subjected to highly addictive stuff from an early age.\n

Just something very concerning to me. I think we should regain control of our activities and it just feels that society today pushes more and more for taking away our so-called free time and selling it back to ourselves into their consumerized boxs. I think we all know that’s fucked and that’s why reddit refugees feel better here without that fucking karma score, without ads, without algorithms fucking trying to make you addicted. I think that fresh air is called autonomy.\n
