Child one keeps applying for different jobs in the technology industry but nobody will accept them. However, they keep trying and trying. They are like Sisyphus. They also aren’t doing anything as they wait.\n
\n
Child two makes themselves exclusive to doing odds and ends for a decent amount of money. While child one thinks jobs should be sought via the application process, child two is averse enough to this that the inconsistency of what they do day to day is intentional.\n
\n
Child three applied an actual application for an “actual” job and found one. The catch? It’s an organized crime job. However, it’s not immoral even though it’s illegal. They’re the personal household assistant of the mob boss. They too get paid immensely.\n
\n
Child four also applied an actual application for an “actual” job and found one. The catch? It’s not illegal but has ethical issues involved. They mastermind ways to monitor and deal with those considered national threats. They too get paid immensely.\n
\n
Child five, too, applied an actual application for an “actual” job, but it’s something they’re utterly terrible at doing, skill-wise. They’re tasked with therapy but have so little skill it’s considered useless. Child five, despite this flaw, gets paid decently by the office building.\n
\n
Child six applied for a job and was appointed into one that had the completely foreseeable result of causing many dozens of people to lose their own job. They maintain a scenery-modifying machine which caused and still threatens to cause many scenery workers to become like spare cogs wandering the streets in search of a purpose. Child six too gets paid well, despite also having a version of their job that undermines the importance of the profession itself.\n
\n
Finally, child seven is a volunteer, one with no ethical or legal issues involved, no issues finding a job, and no limits whatsoever in what they can do for others, and they do it all for free. However, after a few months of doing it, they think “that’s enough for me” and they never do a deed again.\n
\n
One day, you realize you are passing away and summon all seven children to your home. You have specific things, all of which only one child can inherit, and due to the nature of these things, it has to be the child whose deeds make them out to seem the worthiest, as it’s the only tiebreaker. Suppose you had seven children.\n
\n
All of them, having reached the age of maturity, were jobless and were encouraged to find a job.\n
\n
Which child do you prioritize as being the best candidate for the one with the highest worth?

It feels like no matter where I turn some septuagenarian, or older, is making life miserable for myself and others. Usually these are older white Christian conservatives, obsessed with a delusional sense of reality that no longer has a basis in fact, or perhaps never did.\n
\n
There is a disproportionate amount of wealth concentrated in the older generation and those who will inherit it will probably be even worse with that money than the last generation. Certainly we see evidence of that already, anyone in their 30’s who has parents who help them out VS those who don’t have that have radically different outcomes. For some reason those lucky enough to come from good families ascribe laziness and bad attitude to those who don’t have the family support, as if they are somehow enjoying “self made success” while mummy does their laundry for them.\n
\n
No generation previous needed this kind of assistance well into adulthood, but this infantilisation of working adults has happened because of the hoarding of wealth, refusing to pass on the torch in workplaces and just blocking change for the sake of stoking petty politics. Most of us will never own our own home but all the politicians want to talk about is whether it’s OK to dehumanise trans people or not.\n
\n
I’m 36 this year. For most of my teens I thought there’d be some kind of tipping point where the conservative boomers would fuck off or at least let the next generation step in, but that hasn’t happened. Back in the 1990’s you could be a girl and wear jeans and be empowered, now this is considered some kind of woke statement. As if we recently invented this idea of women and men being equal.\n
\n
The faces of my two dogs, my cat and my husband are all that keep me going. Knowing they need me gives me just enough to get out of bed in the morning and start moving… but I’m struggling to do even that without having a breakdown. My husband and I have medical expenses we can’t afford and are borrowing money to survive right now. I run my own business and just feel this immense pressure on my shoulders, that again is compounded by how unfair the world is right now.\n
\n
Anyone got any advice for coping with this late stage capitalist hellscape?

The USS Monitor was an ironclad warship used by the Union Navy during the US Civil War. It was a radical design that sat low on the waterline to present a very small target, and had a revolving turret rather than a broadside battery. The turret traversed with steam power, being about to make a full rotation in just under 23 seconds. During the Battle of Hampton Roads the turret was fitted with a pair of 11-inch guns.\n
\n
\n
\n
It was rushed to take part in the second day of the Battle of Hampton Roads to oppose the Confederate ironclad that the CSA called the CCS Virginia that had been wreaking havoc on wooden Union ships. The USS Monitor engaged the Confederate ironclad for hours in the first ever battle of ironclad ships. In the end neither ship gained a decisive advantage before withdrawing.\n
\n
\n
\n
The USS Monitor continued to help the union blockade Norfolk until the Confederacy was forced to scuttle its own ironclad as Union land forces closed off Norfolk and the river beyond it. The USS Monitor then sailed to support the Union army in the Battle Of Drewry’s Bluff. After that it moved to participate in the Union blockade of North Carolina, but floundered during a storm and sank.\n

+url: "https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/042e5c9d-d1d3-4d21-b0b4-f240383f7ea8.jpeg"
+body: """
CSS Virginia was the first, but not last, steam-powered ironclad warship built by the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. It was constructed from the original lower hull and engines of the scuttled steam frigate USS Merrimack. CSS Virginia famously took part in the Battle of Hampton Roads, opposing the Union’s ironclad, the USS Monitor, in March 1862. The battle is significant in naval history as the first battle between ironclads.\n
\n
\n
\n
The origin of the CSS Virginia begins during the US military evacuation from Gosport Navy Yard in 1861. The steam frigate USS Merrimack was burned to the waterline and sunk to prevent the ship’s capture, however once Confederate forces took control of the area, they were able to raise the ship and discover that the lower hull and steam engine were intact.\n
\n
\n
\n
Off of this foundation, the Confederacy built the CSS Virginia as an ironclad with a casemate design. A casemate design used the main deck housing the entire gun battery in fixed gunports. The ship had 14 gunports. As armament four muzzle-loading single-banded Brooke rifles, six smoothbore 9-inch Dahlgren guns, two 7-inch pivot guns, and two 6.4-inch cannons, and two 12 pound howitzers were arrayed throughout the ship in both gunports and deck mounts. In addition the CSS Virginia was fitted with with a ram. As a downside to the massive armor and armament build onto the ship, the original steam engines were put under great strain making the ship slow and unmaneuverable.\n

The CSS Virginia took part in the two day long Battle of Hampton Roads begining on March 8, 1862. On the first day it sank two Union ships and ran a third one aground.\n
\n
\n
\n
One the second day, the Union ironclad, the USS Monitor, engaged it in a battle for hours, but neither ship was able to significantly damage the other. At the end of the day, both ships withdrew with neither having gained a clear victory. This was the only time they was engage in combat with each other. The Union continued to blockade Norfolk, containing the Confederate ships while not engaging them.\n

\n
\n
\n
On May 10th Union land forces advanced and took Norfolk, blocking off the CSS Virginia’s river access. Since the ironclad was not suitable for ocean sailing, there was nowhere for it to go, and on May 11th the ship was scuttled.\n
\n
The ship is known by many names. It is often referred to by its original designation as the “Merrimack” even in its Confederate ironclad form. Northern papers and Union troops during the Civil War nicknamed it “The Rebel Monster” as well. Pre-1900 historians frequently misspelled the name as "Merrimac”, and the misspelling has also become widely repeated.\n
