If not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s going to reduce visual quality anyhow.<\/li>\n<li>Are you sure \u201cchanging codecs\u201d would save you as much space as you think it would?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It depends where your material comes from. If it\u2019s ripped from streaming services it\u2019s (generally) already as compressed at as it can be regardless of codec. E.g. Amazon mostly still provides their streams in h26<strong>4<\/strong> (a 20 yo codec) that\u2019s very high quality at very small filesize.<\/p>\n<p>If you still want to do that: I don\u2019t believe there is one automated solution that will save quality <strong>and<\/strong> space across the board. (If there is, I\u2019d like to hear about it)<\/p>\n<p>A scenario I\u2019d envision for myself:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>tinkering with ffmpeg for test results<\/li>\n<li>grouping material according to these results<\/li>\n<li>set up a separate ffmpeg-script for each group<\/li>\n<li>wrap the whole thing into a systemd service and make sure it survives reboots, i.e. picks up where it left.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n",
