I didn’t read this series when I was a kid, but I finally got around to reading Roger Zelazny’s Chronicles of Amber.\n
\n
Given it’s an older series, I wasn’t sure how much I’d like it (some of those older series age horribly), but it was actually REALLY good still, and the few minor things that’d aged too much wouldn’t be hard to update for a modern audience.\n
\n
But the concept of Amber is fantastic, Corwin’s behavior and arc perfect, and I think a TV series could do it justice nowadays. Man, some CGI artists could do some beautiful work depicting a hellride through shadow.\n
\n
I also would really, really love to see Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern adapted…but there’s a few parts that have aged pretty badly, so it’d need careful handling of things like Lessa and F’lar’s relationship and such. And maybe, you know, keep Jaxom the hell away from Corana.\n
\n
But I think the whole idea of threadfall, and Impressing dragons, could be done beautifully on the screen. I think a run from *Dragonflight* to *All The Weyrs of Pern* (including the Harper Hall Trilogy) could be done. (Then leave the later books out, they don’t really add much, lol.)\n

\n
The series would need a top-notch composer scoring it, though. I’d vote for Natalie Holt. She did wonderfully with Loki, and it’d be a nice touch having a woman score the series that’d have the Harper Hall Trilogy included in it.

I read the original two trilogies in the 80s so I've forgotten some bits, but what were the things that would be problematic today? I don't think I remember any details relating to the above. Lessa is always one of the first people I think of when someone says "so and so was the first strong woman in scifi" and it's a character that came 30+ years later.\n
\n
I only just read the Amber books a couple of years ago myself; I don't know how I'd missed them. Very much unique stories in my experience, really unlike anything else I've ever read. I did enjoy them, but I think I respected what he did as a storyteller more than I enjoyed them, if that makes any sense.

I’ve been seeing all these posts about Linux lately, and looking at them, I can honestly see the appeal. I’d love having so much autonomy over the OS I use, and customize it however I like, even having so many options to choose from when it comes to distros. The only thing holding me back, however, is incompatibility issues. A lot of programs I work with very often are Windows-exclusive, and alternatives supporting Linux are rare. So I guess I’m stuck with Windows, since I deem those particular programs really important.\n

Any advice from Linux nerds here? All constructive replies are very appreciated.

Unless you have very specialized requirements (and quite possibly you do) the solution is usually to unhook yourself from thinking of needing specific *programs* and to instead focus on needing to perform specific *tasks*. (Then finding the Linux way to perform that task.)\n
\n
Barring that, the codeweavers suggestion is a good one. I used it in my early days when I thought I couldn't live without particular pieces of Windows software and although that was several years ago, even then it was pretty good about being able to easily run arbitrary Windows software. IMO it's cheap enough to be worth the investment.\n
\n
If you truly have bespoke requirements that just can't be satisfied by either of the above, staying on Windows may legitimately be your best option.\n
\n
More generally - if you decide to take this step, expect to have to learn to use a computer substantially differently than you have in the past. It's not harder; in many ways it's easier. But if you are very experienced and comfortable with Windows, a lot of concepts are going to feel foreign to you. Tackle one task at a time and your experiences will build upon each other. Go into it expecting to have to learn, and you'll do fine. Bizarrely I find the least tech-savvy folks sometimes have the easiest time transitioning.

\n

Some of us take it to our hearts to remember one of the most influential hacktivists <3\n
\n
For that matter, I’d like to share a documentary about him: [archive.org/…/TheInternetsOwnBoyTheStoryOfAaronSw…](https://archive.org/details/TheInternetsOwnBoyTheStoryOfAaronSwartz)\n
\n
You can also get to know his legacy by reading the short Guerrilla Open Access Manifesto, available here: [openlibrary.org/…/Guerilla_Open_Access_Manifesto](https://openlibrary.org/books/OL25421460M/Guerilla_Open_Access_Manifesto)\n

Really?\n

Yep that would be just the picture to post about an information freedom activist driven to death by the US justice system. that's why it says "Aaron Swartz day" in OP, because it's a pic of Rishi Sunak.\n
