[REPOST]\n
\n
This was back in the '80s, my first job, working as a maintenance man at a local hotel. I'd been working there part-time since I was 16 and when I turned 18, I got a notice to attend jury duty. I picked a week and I let my boss know.\n
\n
The owner of the hotel found out and sees me in the hallway and tells me that I need to do "whatever it takes" to get out of jury duty because he needs me at the hotel that week for a large dog show, and if I'm not at work, I'm fired.\n
\n
When I get to jury duty, day 1, I get selected for a week-long trial, and the judge asks jurors if there's any reason we cannot serve on the jury. They go around... When they get to me, I'm nervous, never been in court before and too scared to lie.\n
\n
*Cue malicious compliance.*\n
\n
I tell the judge that the owner of the business I work at will fire me if I'm not back today and said I needed to do everything I can to get out of jury duty or I'm fired, other than that I'm fine serving. The judge looks p*ssed.\n
\n
The judge has me approach the bench, asks for the name of the owner, location, etc. Then he hands the court officer a paper and says something to the officer. I'm told to return to the jury box. About an hour later (still selecting a jury), the officer returns with the owner, visibly shaken, in handcuffs and walked to the front of the judge's bench.\n
\n
The owner is standing in front of the judge. The judge asks him questions which he apologetically tries to worm out of.\n
\n
Then the judge instructs him that I will be here for jury duty, I will serve as long as I need to, and he should NOT do anything to retaliate against me -- and that the judge is filing charges and will be instructing the clerk to check with me regularly and if, for any reason, I am fired or face any disciplinary action at work - he will hold the owner in contempt, violation of a court order, and a bunch more legal stuff. He will spend time in jail thinking about how important jury duty is.\n
\n
Then the judge makes him apologize to me, in court!\n
\n
I made it onto the jury and I served the week. I reported back to work the following week. I expected some blowback, but I never got fired, none of my shifts were changed and I got paid for my time in jury - I didn't ask why I got paid.\n
\n
The clerk did check back a few times and I was told to call the judge's clerk's direct phone number if anything happened. It was awesome, I was pretty much bullet-proof and worked until I saved enough to go back to school.\n
\n
**TL;DR: When I got my first notice for jury duty, my boss told me to get out of it or I'd be fired. Being the scared 18-year old that I was, when the judge asked if any of us couldn't serve, I told him what my boss had said. The judge had my boss dragged into court and threatened with jail time. I ended up serving on the jury and getting paid for the days I missed at work.**

[REPOST]\n

+title: "[REPOST] Won't Let Me Go To Jury Duty? Enjoy Being Questioned In Court"
+url: null
+body: """
[REPOST]\n

That's because it has a bug. They changed upvotes from boost -> like to be compatible with Lemmy. The reputation calculation hasn't been updated yet. It probably will be soon. Might even have a PR already.

While you're right that that's a downside of downvotes, I think that it's far better than the alternative.\n
\n
Downvotes means we have a way to discourage really bad behavior *and* lets others see that it's discouraged. For example, suppose someone posts something bigoted. It sucks to see those kinda comments (especially when they affect you personally). When those comments are heavily downvoted, it feels better, since it tells you that the views expressed in the comment are not acceptable. It's *extremely* discouraging when I see bigoted posts with a positive score. Without downvoting, they all have positive scores and it's just "less positive".\n
\n
It'd be nice if reporting was able to remove such comments before anyone sees them, but that will never be the case. Too many communities don't remove comments fast enough and many more simply won't remove comments unless they're really bad, if at all. Some moderators are bigots themselves and others simply don't have the ability to recognize dog whistles that may be in comments. Or they're not personally affected by the malicious comment, so they can be more easily convinced that if the comment was politely worded, it's acceptable even if it's blatantly bigoted.\n
\n
To be clear, it does suck that users will use it as a disagree button for comments that are otherwise good, but that is far, far worth it. The presence of downvotes were a major reason why I used Reddit (and now this) while disliking the likes of twitter.

Would sound stupid as I don't indepth of PeerTube yet but I have heard that PeerTube is federated video sharing platform. I also heard it can't hold much a load which makes sense as HD videos takes lots of load. That begs me the question why don't we use it for small/short videos(not those vertical videos) to build communities like r/combinedgifs, r/whenthe or r/funnyvideos which are video driven communities?\n
\n
Since we only need at max 2-3min of HD content per post to run these communities, I wouldn't assume it would be much of a load. With this we don't have to depend on third party embedding platforms like imgur(we know what happened over there recently).\n

Also someone make a community like the ones I've mentioned. I am missing video content here on fediverse!\n

It's genuinely hard and needs to be improved. Subscribing to a magazine that someone else on kbin has subscribed to already isn't too bad. Go to the magazine (eg, click what looks like the subreddit name in the post) and scroll alllll the way down and there'll be a subscribe button.\n
\n
But if nobody has subscribed yet in the instance, it's hilariously hard. You have to search *in the general search* (not the magazine search) for specifically "magazine@domain.com" and you should see a subscribe button then. You will not content in that magazine that existed before you subscribed. If that sounds terrible, it's because it is. Thankfully, most of the time, you won't be the first to subscribe to a magazine and thus can just use the magazine search or browse the front page to see posts.\n
\n
PS: the subscribe option is also as the bottom of each thread. So you can alternatively just open a thread in the magazine instead of the magazine itself.\n
\n
PPS: I've mentioned the subscribe button being at the bottom because that's the placement on mobile and I think many of us are on mobile. On desktop, it's in the sidebar.
