I’m talking about the installation process for VMware itself.\n

I had to help someone non-techy install VMware on Pop!_OS (the OS preinstalled by System76 on their hardware), and it required messing with the kernel modules which fails on Pop!_OS. It seems like VMware builds for a very specific version of Ubuntu which of course, means the kernel module building process fails when you use a kernel version that’s different to what Ubuntu has (which Pop!_OS does and maybe some other Ubuntu-based distros). Thankfully someone on GitHub maintains up-to-date patches for the VMware modules so I was able to guide him through there but this isn’t something someone new to Linux would want to do.\n

Hopefully some of this comes to Windows guests. One of the major issues right now is that Windows virtualisation isn’t great. Hopefully some of this comes to Windows guests. One of the major issues right now is that Windows virtualisation isn’t great. VirtualBox has GPU problems, VMware requires a lot of messing about with kernel modules if you don’t use Ubuntu, if KVM/QEMU is able to make a smooth environment for Windows guests that’d help bring people in who still need Windows for the odd bit of software or two.\n

I remember there was a GPU driver for Windows but that seems to have stalled?\n

I’m talking about the installation process for VMware itself.\n
\n
\n
It’s *not* like simply installing it from a package manager, well unless you use Arch but I’m not putting this person who’s new to Linux on Arch when he just started using CLI.

\n
I remember there was a GPU driver for Windows but that seems to have stalled?\n
\n
Edit: Cleared up why I think VMware is a bit of a mess.

I’m talking about the installation process for VMware itself.\n
\n
\n
It’s *not* like simply installing it from a package manager, well unless you use Arch but I’m not putting this person who’s new to Linux on Arch when he just started using CLI.

**Lemmy**\n
\n
- **Accounts:** 1 — just this one I’m posting from.\n
- **Apps:** Memmy and Mlem. I was a long-time Apollo user and have been seeking out a Lemmy app with that level of polish. Nothing really feels quite the same, but I’m sure with time one of them will get there.\n
- **Uses:** Trying to replace Reddit as a discussion board for a bunch of topics I my real-world friends aren’t as interested in, and for keeping up with tech news.\n
\n
**Pixelfed**\n
\n
- **Accounts:** 1 — under my real name.\n
- **Apps:** 0 at the moment. I used the Pixelfed test flight app for a while, but it seemed to be hurting my battery life. When it gets a proper app store release, I’ll probably grab it again if nothing else comes along.\n
- **Uses:** Trying to make it as much of an old-Instagram replacement as possible.\n
\n
Now it’s your turn. What other platforms are you on, how are you using them, etc.

I’ve been on Lemmy and Mastodon for a little while but still not super active on either, and haven’t really kept up with fediverse stuff as a whole.\n
\n
With that said, I’m interested, what are you using, how are you using it, and what are you using it on? Do you have a bunch of accounts per platform? Do you try use one account across everything as much as you can?\n
\n
I’ll go first with something of a template that might make responding easier for people:\n
\n
**EDIT**: Apologies for the formatting, it seems like some of the markdown stuff is broken/very different to any other markdown formatting I’ve used and this is the best I can do. Hope it’s legible enough.\n

- **Apps:** Ice Cubes, Mammoth — I have both accounts on both apps, I like each for different reasons. Ice Cubes is super customisable and open, Mammoth is pretty.\n
- **Uses:** Following some podcast hosts, keeping up with local news.\n
