The trick is thermohaline circulation, basically salty water moves differently then fresh water in cold and warm environments. So to promote that effect the stage is tilted to allow warmer fresh water above cooler salty water below. Then a membrane moves the salt out of the circulation so as not to accumulate and clog the system.\n
\n
The thing is that scaling this upward would present some challenges structurally to do large volumes OR the complexity would increase if they kept the same size and just made thousands of these little stages. Not to mention that, depending on what they're using for a membrane for salt removal, having a larger surface area could make it easier or more difficult to maintain. Easier in that you only need to clean it every so often (the membrane helps spread the load) or more difficult in that such a large membrane requires delicate processes to change out.\n
\n
Also commercial production requires a fixed output, so with sunlight being variable any commercial installation would require storage.\n
\n
But reading the brine discharge always makes me wish that grid based sodium ion batteries would be researched more. But can't have that because oil companies already put large deposits into lithium mines.

+url: "https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20230904-how-the-royal-mint-is-turning-electronic-waste-into-gold"
+body: """
**Summary**\n
\n
The UK Royal Mint has developed an innovative method to extract precious metals, particularly gold, from electronic waste such as discarded laptops and mobile phones. This sustainable and energy-efficient process claims to recover 99% of gold from printed circuit boards, and the Royal Mint plans to open a factory capable of processing 90 tonnes of circuit boards per week, potentially recovering hundreds of kilograms of gold annually. The method involves a chemical solution that dissolves and leaches gold at room temperature and is “environmentally friendly”, producing fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional smelting methods. The initiative aims to reduce e-waste and the environmental impact of mining for raw materials.\n
\n
**Other Details**\n
\n
- E-waste is a rapidly growing waste stream, with an estimated 50 million tonnes produced globally each year.\n
- Only 20% of e-waste is formally recycled, with the rest often sent to landfill or incinerated.\n
- The Royal Mint’s initiative is focused on sustainable recycling within the UK and reducing the need to export e-waste for processing.\n
- The method has the potential to recover other precious metals like palladium, silver, and copper.\n
- The goal is to establish a network of local e-waste suppliers and processors to encourage reuse and reduce waste miles.\n
- The Royal Mint aims to generate 70% of its required power from renewables, including energy produced from the waste processing.\n
- There is growing interest in recycling e-waste to recover valuable materials and reduce the environmental impact of mining for these resources. Innovative methods like this could drive the growth of a more circular economy for precious metals.

Strategic quotes deploy! If it's anything like the methods I've seen, then that's some really generous usage of the words environmentally and friendly next to each other.
