They\u2019re incredibly good at it given their infinite resources and capture of politicians preventing regulation to fight against insidious practices. They employ hundreds of thousands of developers, engineers, and marketing experts. They created Bluetooth beacons, cookies, personalised experiences, wire taps masquerading as personal assistants, convenient and personalised e-commerce, analytics, telemetry, GPS and cellular tracking, fingerprinting, etc. ad nauseum. They influence and own governments, deploy their own pharmacies, know your intimate medical records, your shopping habits, when you go to church and school, your political affiliation, if you\u2019re a gamer, how you use your internet, what devices you have and own in your home, etc. <strong>You cannot stop them.<\/strong> The only way you could stop them is by opting out and no longer participating in the internet and any online service. But even then, if someone with a smart device is near your home, their apps will detect whatever devices are in your home and be able to fingerprint you anyway. In other words, it\u2019s very difficult to hide.<\/p>\\n<p>If your threat model is not extreme and you\u2019re not hiding from the State (you wouldn\u2019t be posting on Lemmy, a public forum), best thing you can do is <em>limit<\/em> what you expose to them. This is where I found the most peace in my privacy journey.<\/p>\\n<p>Here\u2019s my privacy model in relation to your goal, which gives me some piece of mind with my privacy needs:<\/p>\\n<ul>\\n<li>Only one phone number for personal and one phone number for work provided by my employer. Each number is used distinctly for their purposes.<\/li>\\n<li>Friends and family get a personal email, which is actually an email alias. No one gets my real email.<\/li>\\n<li>Each service gets a unique email alias that forwards to my own email, which remains hidden.<\/li>\\n<li>I don\u2019t sign up for reward cards and limit which apps I use. I only give info if I absolutely have no choice.<\/li>\\n<li>Every service gets fake and randomized info where possible: I was born on UNIX epoch time, my gender changes, and my name varies (Anon O\u2019Moose living at 1234 Fake Street in Beverly Hills, CA).
