+title: "Framework vs Macbook laptop?"
+url: null
+body: """
I apologise if this is the wrong community to post this in, I wasn’t sure which one was ideal.\n
\n
I’m suffering a difficult decision of choosing between a Framework laptop or a Macbook Air (M1, 2020). I really like the ethical principles of Framework, i.e. you actually own it and can repair it any time, leading to an increased longevity. At the same time, I have heard people claim Macbook is superior in almost all aspects (especially battery life).\n
\n
I know both Apple and Microsoft are greedy CorpGiants, but seeing as I have an iPhone, I figure it would be easier using a Mac? But then again, the prices really are not worth it, especially considering it costs a lot to repair them. I have 0 experience with Linux, and this computer will be used at school, so I suppose it stands between macOS and Windows.\n
\n
I guess I just want some advice? Or some guidance and comparisons. Is 8GB enough for a Framework laptop? The 16GB version costs nearly as much as the Mac I’m looking at, hence my hesitance. If anybody has some experience using Framework and / or Macbook, I would love to hear about it. What are some pros and cons? Which people are better off with FW and Mac respectively?\n
\n
Thank you!\n
\n
*Edit, forgot to mention: I need a Swedish keyboard on the computer, and Framework apparently only offers English. This is the largest obstacle preventing me from leaning towards FW.

+body: """
Hi All,\n
\n
I have a 4TB drive that was originally in a PC connected via SATA. I now wish to put it in an external enclosure and connect it via USB, however this is proving more difficult than I expected, and from what I understand it’s Windows XP’s fault.\n
\n
On attempting to mount the drive with `sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt`, I receive the following error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
The output of `fdisk -l` is as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Disk /dev/sdc: 3.64 TiB, 4000787025920 bytes, 976754645 sectors\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk model: Expansion Desk\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disklabel type: dos\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk identifier: 0x00000000\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">/dev/sdc1 1 4294967295 4294967295 16T ee GPT\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
As can be seen, the disk is detected correctly as a 3.64TiB drive, but there is a partition that’s read as 16TB. This, AFAIK, is because the sectors are incorrectly read as 4096 bytes long when they should be 512 bytes, and this is a thing that external enclosures do to ensure MBR compatibility with Windows XP.\n
\n
I tried overcoming this by mounting as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ sudo mount -o ro,offset=$((1*512)) /dev/sdc1 /mnt\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
however now I have a new error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: failed to setup loop device for /dev/sdc1.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Trying to mount with `sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt` only yields\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
I’m at a loss as to how to mount this drive - at least, without reformatting it. Is it at all possible? Once I’ve cracked the code, can I configure `/etc/fstab` to do it automatically for me, or am I stuck in this limbo-land where I have data on my disk that’s only readable with a hacky workaround? As a last resort, I think I can plug it back in via SATA, copy all 4TB off, plug it in via USB, reformat it and copy everything back on, but I want to avoid that hassle.\n
\n
Edit: Output of `fdisk -l` when connected via SATA. Note the sector size is now 512 and the drive mounts happily.\n

\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ sudo mount -o ro,offset=$((1*512)) /dev/sdc1 /mnt\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
however now I have a new error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: failed to setup loop device for /dev/sdc1.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Trying to mount with `sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt` only yields\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist.\n
</span>\n
```\n

Why switch?\n
-----------\n
\n
I played with the idea of switching for quite a while. Having switched my daily driver from Windows maybe 6-9 Months ago I made many mistakes in the meantime.\n
\n
Good and bad\n
------------\n
\n
This may have led to a diminshed experience with ubuntu but all in all, I was very pleased to see that Linux works as a daily driver. Still, I was unhappy with the kind of dumbed down gnome experience.\n
\n
Problems\n
--------\n
\n
There were errors neither I nor people I asked could fix and the snap situation on ubuntu (just the fact that they’re proprietary, nothing else).\n
\n
Installation\n
------------\n
\n
Installing debian (and kde) was easier and harder than I expected. The download mirror I used must not have been great although its very close to my location because it took ages although my internet connections is good.\n
\n
Apps\n
----\n
\n
Since I switched to Linux, I toned down my app diet a lot. Installing all my apps from ubuntu was as easy as writing a short list and going through discover. Later I added flatpak which gave me a couple apps not available through discover (such as fluffychat). The last two I copied directly as appimages.\n
\n
Games\n
-----\n
\n
I was scared that the „old kernel“ of stable debian would be a problem. As it turns out, everthing works great so far, a lot better than on ubuntu which might or might not be my fault.\n
\n
Instability\n
-----------\n
\n
Kde does have some quirks that irritate me a bit like installing timeshift (because I tried network backups which dont work with it and the native backup solution does not seem to accept my sambashare) led to a window I could only close by rebooting.\n
\n
Boot time\n
---------\n
\n
What does feel a bit odd is the boot process. After my bios splash, it shows „welcome to grub“ and then switches to the debian start menu for 3 seconds or so, then shows some terminal stuff and then starts kde splash and then login. This feels a lot longer than ubuntu did. Its probably easy to change in some config but its also something that should be obvious.\n
\n
Summary\n
-------\n
\n
So far I‘m incredibly happy although I ran into initramfs already probably because of timeshift which I threw out again. I might do a manual backup if nothing else works. My games dont freeze or stutter which is nice. All apps I had on ubuntu now work on debian and no snaps at all.\n
\n
**TL;DR:** If you feel adventurous, debian and kde are a pretty awesome mix and rid you of the proprietary ubuntu snap store. It also doesnt tell you that you can get security upgrades if you subscribe to ubuntu pro. Works the same if not better.

The video discusses the privacy concerns associated with SIM cards in mobile phones, highlighting three main reasons to be cautious. First, it explains how SIM cards enable constant location tracking through communication with cell towers. Second, it delves into the autonomy of SIM cards, particularly proactive SIMs that can send hidden messages to the cell network without the user’s knowledge. Lastly, it explores the potential risks of having too much control centralized on a single device, particularly in terms of split tunneling with VPNs.\n
\n
Then Naomi shares personal reasons for not using a SIM card in her phone, emphasizing alternatives such as relying on WiFi, using an anonymous Calyx hotspot, or considering mobile hotspots. The benefits of these alternatives include increased privacy, the ability to control VPN usage, and reduced exposure to potential hidden messages sent by SIM cards. The video also touches on potential downsides, such as the need to carry multiple devices and potential connectivity issues when using hotspots.
