Updated rate limits going into effect over the coming weeks\n
\n
Hi Devs,\n
\n
Over the last few months, we’ve shared [updates](https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/12qwagm/an_update_regarding_reddits_api/) on our [Data API Terms](https://www.redditinc.com/policies/data-api-terms) and [Developer Terms](https://www.redditinc.com/policies/developer-terms). **Shortly, we will begin enforcing the previously announced updated API rate limits.** Rate limits will go into effect for all apps with usage above the free limit in the coming weeks, and some changes will be noticeable over the next 24 hours.\n
\n
As [we have shared](https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/141oqn8/api_updates_questions/), this will not impact non-commercial bots operating within free rate limits or moderator tools.\n
\n
**Free API access rates are as follows**:\n
\n
- 100 queries per minute per OAuth client id if you are using OAuth authentication\n
- 10 queries per minute if you are not using OAuth authentication\n
\n
**The vast majority of third-party apps and bots fall into the free usage category and should not see any disruptions**. **Our free rates account for bursts in usage.**\n
\n
For apps that exceed these limits, we have exempted select clients (for example, accessibility-focused apps like RedReader, Luna, and Dystopia), mod bots, and mod tools. **If your bot or tool is affected unexpectedly, please reach out** [https://reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=14868593862164](https://reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/requests/new?ticket_form_id=14868593862164)**.**

I am looking for a fediverse solution for a blog and I tried it with [writefreely](https://publish.ministryofinternet.eu/utopify-org/), but it has some disadvantages I can’t live with.\n
\n
The most important one is, that it should be possible to communicate with people within the fediverse. People should be able to comment on every article with a fediverse account, like it is already possible between Mastodon, Pleroma, PeerTube and others. But comments aren’t a thing with writefreely and this is sad.\n
\n
After using Lemmy for a few days I just thought if it is possible to use it as a blog and [ask on lemmys github](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/issues/760) if it is possible to restrict a group so only one person could post new articles, but all others can comment. And the answer is yes!\n
\n
But would it be possible to use it as a blog?\n
\n
Imagine I would have a group called “utopify.org - Research & Development” and would post current progress about a blog series and you can only comment on it. Would it be possible and would it be something you want to see on Lemmy or would this just be an abuse of the software.\n
\n
If all of this is just a no-go, are there other ways in the fediverse to have a blog article, which can be shared on the fediverse and be commented on?

So, as any self-respecting datahoarder and selfhoster, I have my server rack populated with a few machines, churning along as they tend to my hobby-related projects. Now that I’ve started using Lemmy I’m toying with the idea of selfhosting an instance, as I have both the hardware, bandwidth, and skillset for it.\n

So my question is: Are there any advantages to it? And other than time and resources, what are the downsides?

This story sort of fits here, just trying to add content.\n
\n
Some backstory, my old school used to provide new uniforms every year for certain athletics teams. For some reason staring two years before all uniform ordering was decided by the head coach for a completely different sport. He had a reputation for ordering all the girls teams the skimpiest clothes he could find in the catalog.\n
\n
My sport had a boys team and girls team under one coach. The boys team were issued knee length shorts and jerseys, the girls team was given skintight spandex leotards. ( I think he knew a girl on our team really hated the things because he stopped ordering them as soon as she graduated) The first year we just sucked it up and wore them. The second year my coach dug out old uniforms from storage for the girls team and while we were required to wear the official uniform we just wore school branded clothes over it for competition.\n
\n
So next season rolls around and there is a new rule, the girls team are no longer permitted to wear any clothing not part of the official uniform during competitions. Also the new uniforms include a pair of shorts that are slit all the way to the waist band. The boys uniforms have not changed. These are the official uniforms and we have to order them for the teams, but there is no rule saying the boys can’t wear extra clothes so the boys team put down their clothing sizes for the skimpy shorts and the girls ordered the knee length shorts in their size. The boys team competing in the uniforms caused enough awareness that all uniform decisions were handed back to the individual sports coaches.

+title: "That time the boys team had our back against sexist uniforms"
+url: null
+body: """

+slug: "Help-with-external-4TB-drive"
+title: "Help with external 4TB drive"
+url: null
+body: """
Hi All,\n
\n
I have a 4TB drive that was originally in a PC connected via SATA. I now wish to put it in an external enclosure and connect it via USB, however this is proving more difficult than I expected, and from what I understand it’s Windows XP’s fault.\n
\n
On attempting to mount the drive with `sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt`, I receive the following error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
The output of `fdisk -l` is as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Disk /dev/sdc: 3.64 TiB, 4000787025920 bytes, 976754645 sectors\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk model: Expansion Desk\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disklabel type: dos\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk identifier: 0x00000000\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">/dev/sdc1 1 4294967295 4294967295 16T ee GPT\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
As can be seen, the disk is detected correctly as a 3.64TiB drive, but there is a partition that’s read as 16TB. This, AFAIK, is because the sectors are incorrectly read as 4096 bytes long when they should be 512 bytes, and this is a thing that external enclosures do to ensure MBR compatibility with Windows XP.\n
\n
I tried overcoming this by mounting as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ sudo mount -o ro,offset=$((1*512)) /dev/sdc1 /mnt\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
however now I have a new error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: failed to setup loop device for /dev/sdc1.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Trying to mount with `sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt` only yields\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
I’m at a loss as to how to mount this drive - at least, without reformatting it. Is it at all possible? Once I’ve cracked the code, can I configure `/etc/fstab` to do it automatically for me, or am I stuck in this limbo-land where I have data on my disk that’s only readable with a hacky workaround? As a last resort, I think I can plug it back in via SATA, copy all 4TB off, plug it in via USB, reformat it and copy everything back on, but I want to avoid that hassle.\n
\n
Edit: Output of `fdisk -l` when connected via SATA. Note the sector size is now 512 and the drive mounts happily.\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Disk /dev/sdb: 3.7 TiB, 4000787030016 bytes, 7814037168 sectors\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk model: HGST HDN724040AL\n
+url: null
+body: """
Hi All,\n
\n
I have a 4TB drive that was originally in a PC connected via SATA. I now wish to put it in an external enclosure and connect it via USB, however this is proving more difficult than I expected, and from what I understand it’s Windows XP’s fault.\n
\n
On attempting to mount the drive with `sudo mount /dev/sdc /mnt`, I receive the following error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
The output of `fdisk -l` is as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">Disk /dev/sdc: 3.64 TiB, 4000787025920 bytes, 976754645 sectors\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk model: Expansion Desk\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Units: sectors of 1 * 4096 = 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Sector size (logical/physical): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disklabel type: dos\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Disk identifier: 0x00000000\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type\n
</span><span style="color:#323232;">/dev/sdc1 1 4294967295 4294967295 16T ee GPT\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
As can be seen, the disk is detected correctly as a 3.64TiB drive, but there is a partition that’s read as 16TB. This, AFAIK, is because the sectors are incorrectly read as 4096 bytes long when they should be 512 bytes, and this is a thing that external enclosures do to ensure MBR compatibility with Windows XP.\n
\n
I tried overcoming this by mounting as follows:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">$ sudo mount -o ro,offset=$((1*512)) /dev/sdc1 /mnt\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
however now I have a new error:\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: failed to setup loop device for /dev/sdc1.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
Trying to mount with `sudo mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt` only yields\n
\n
```\n
\n
<span style="color:#323232;">mount: /mnt: special device /dev/sdc1 does not exist.\n
</span>\n
```\n
\n
I’m at a loss as to how to mount this drive - at least, without reformatting it. Is it at all possible? Once I’ve cracked the code, can I configure `/etc/fstab` to do it automatically for me, or am I stuck in this limbo-land where I have data on my disk that’s only readable with a hacky workaround? As a last resort, I think I can plug it back in via SATA, copy all 4TB off, plug it in via USB, reformat it and copy everything back on, but I want to avoid that hassle.\n
\n
Edit: Output of `fdisk -l` when connected via SATA. Note the sector size is now 512 and the drive mounts happily.\n
