I posted this as a comment in another post but when I got done I realized it would probably just be better as its own post. I’m sure I could find the answers I need myself but frankly I trust the userbase here more than most online articles.\n
\n
As my username hints at, I’m a lawyer. I’m considering starting my own firm as a solo practitioner. I need a computer and/or laptop for it, and as a new business my budget would be pretty tight. I’ve mostly only ever used windows, but I’m getting fed up with the bullshit, so I’m considering going with Linux.\n
\n
I assume Linux is capable of doing everything I need, which is primarily handling word documents, viewing PDFs, watching evidence videos, and online research. But my concern is that some of the more commonly used video types might have trouble on Linux, or that some of the word document templates I use in Windows might have compatibility issues.\n
\n
I’m also nervous about using an OS I’m not familiar with for business purposes right away.\n
\n
So I guess I’m asking a few questions. What is a reliable yet affordable option to get started? Are my concerns based in reality or is Linux going to be able to handle everything windows does without issues? What else might I need to know to use Linux comfortably from the get go? Is it going to take a lot of time and effort to get Linux running how I need it to?\n
\n
For reference, I do consider myself to be somewhat tech-savvy. I don’t code or anything, but I’ve built my last two home computers myself and I’m not scared of general software management, I just don’t make it myself.\n
\n
So, yeah, sell me on Linux, please.

Hello everyone, I just installed Linux (I’m new to it), in particular Linux Mint, with dual booted Windows for games. Tinkered with it a bit, loved the way it looked, loved how fast it is, but I really don’t want to stop on one option and stick with it for a while. I want to try new stuff, new distros (that’s how you call it, right?), new customisation options etc. I really like setting up things how I want them to look like and function, and I’m not sure Linux Mint gives me the full potential of Linux.\n
\n
If I’m right, please recommend something that really will impress me with options (I wouldn’t call myself tech savvy, but I like to learn), or, if I’m wrong, please suggest the way to customize the hell out of Mint, would really appreciate it.\n
\n
Thank you!\n
\n
edit: Thanks everyone for your replies, I’m really interested in KDE Plasma now. You are the best <3

I’m a pretty new Linux user, started using a basic Mint installation on the old desktop I use as part of my stereo/tv setup. All in all couldnt be happier with how easy and flexible it’s been, but one little thing is bugging the crap out of me and I haven’t a clue how to fix.\n
\n
This setup runs the computer audio through a mojo DAC over TOSLINK (eg optical audio) to an analog stereo amp. Getting it to work when I replaced Win 7 with Mint was plug and play - couldn’t have been easier. The super annoying thing is that it seems that now if the desktop is inactive for more than a few minutes the DAC powers down and needs to be turned on manually (fairly certain it’s when the OS goes to sleep but not sure). When I was running windows with same hardware it would not power down until I did it manually. With the wiring and furniture setup I have it’s kind of a PITA to reach back and turn the DAC on every time I want to use the computer.\n
\n
I did some cursory internet searches on the issue without much luck. If one of you fine people can think of a solution, it even an avenue of investigation, I’d appreciate it. As I said, I’m new to Linux but not entirely tech illiterate so im willing to poke at it.

I did some cursory internet searches on the issue without much luck. If one of you fine people can think of a solution, it even an avenue of investigation, I’d appreciate it. As I said, I’m new to Linux but not entirely tech illiterate so im willing to poke at it.
