> The term Generation X has been used at various times to describe alienated youth. In the early 1950s, Hungarian photographer Robert Capa first used Generation X as the title for a photo-essay about young men and women growing up immediately following World War II. The term first appeared in print in a December 1952 issue of Holiday magazine announcing their upcoming publication of Capa’s photo-essay.[7] From 1976 to 1981, English musician Billy Idol used the moniker as the name for his punk rock band.[8] Idol had attributed the name of his band to the book Generation X, a 1964 book on British popular youth culture written by journalists Jane Deverson and Charles Hamblett[9][10]—a copy of which had been owned by Idol’s mother.[11] These uses of the term appear to have no connection to Robert Capa’s photo-essay.[7]\n
> \n
> The term acquired a modern application after the release of Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, a 1991 novel written by Canadian author Douglas Coupland; however, the definition used there is “born in the late 1950s and 1960s”, which is about ten years earlier than definitions that came later.[12][13][9][14] In 1987, Coupland had written a piece in Vancouver Magazine titled “Generation X” which was “the seed of what went on to become the book”.[15][16] Coupland referenced Billy Idol’s band Generation X in the 1987 article and again in 1989 in Vista magazine.[17] In the book proposal for his novel, Coupland writes that Generation X is “taken from the name of Billy Idol’s long-defunct punk band of the late 1970s”.[18] However, in 1995 Coupland denied the term’s connection to the band, stating that:\n
> \n
> The book’s title came not from Billy Idol’s band, as many supposed, but from the final chapter of a funny sociological book on American class structure titled Class, by Paul Fussell. In his final chapter, Fussell named an ‘X’ category of people who wanted to hop off the merry-go-round of status, money, and social climbing that so often frames modern existence.[19][15]\n
> \n
> Author William Strauss noted that around the time Coupland’s 1991 novel was published the symbol “X” was prominent in popular culture, as the film Malcolm X was released in 1992, and that the name “Generation X” ended up sticking. The “X” refers to an unknown variable or to a desire not to be defined.[20][21][14] Strauss’s coauthor Neil Howe noted the delay in naming this demographic cohort saying, “Over 30 years after their birthday, they didn’t have a name. I think that’s germane.” Previously, the cohort had been referred to as Post-Boomers, Baby Busters (which refers to the drop in birth rates following the baby boom in the western world, particularly in the U.S.[where?]),[22] New Lost Generation, latchkey kids, MTV Generation, and the 13th Generation (the 13th generation since American independence).[8][20][17][23][24]

Hello! I’ve posted this a few weeks ago on /c/linux4noobs@programming.dev but I didn’t get much of an answer, I hope it’s okay to post it here as well.\n
\n
I use 3 audio devices on my computer: my monitor’s speakers (through HDMI), my headphones (through line-out/built-in audio) and my microphone (line-in/built-in audio). They all work fine, but when I reboot my headphones / line-out don’t seem to get recognized at all.\n
\n
The only solution I’ve found thus far is to re-install alsa-utils twice after rebooting. Upon the first reinstall, my line-out / headphones reappear but my line-in mic disappears, only to come back after the second reinstall. Technically my sound works perfectly fine after this, but it feels extremely dumb to reinstall a package twice after every reboot.\n
\n
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance :)

Hi,\n
\n
I wanted to run some Large Language Models locally. Something like [Private GPT](https://github.com/imartinez/privateGPT) or [Medium Article](https://medium.com/@aadityaubhat/local-llms-on-apple-silicon-39194de71ab7) on my local Apple Silicon to enhance my privacy but also get some additional help.\n
\n
Does anyone have recommendations or guides I could follow?\n
\n
Thank you very much.

+title: "[not solved] I think I messed something up in the router settings but cannot understand what... now I have no internet connection"
+url: null
+body: """
Hello! I (tried, at least) converted an old laptop to a Debian home server, and I was trying to set up duckdns.org and to enable port forwarding on my router. internet connection was working, I installed packages, docker, immich, etc, and then suddenly (I don’t know exactly when) it refuses to connect to the internet. It does connect to local addresses (I can ssh into it) but `ping google.com` and any other internet-involving command fail. I had set up a rule on the router to forward port 80 to the device’s port 80, but I then removed the rule and it still does not connect to the internet. I rebooted the router but nothing changed. Any idea what could be? the router is a Vodafone router.\n
\n
\n
\n
I changed the hostname to debianserver but on the router it is still written debian. Also, it’s the only device with unknown ipv6\n
\n
thanks in advance!\n
\n
EDIT: I rebooted again the server, and now ipv6 is not unknown anymore, and the hostname is correct. however, it still does not connect to the internet\n
\n
\n
\n
EDIT 2:\n
\n
only one device (debianserver) has this problem, other devices work as before\n
\n
EDIT 3:\n
\n
I don’t know if it’s useful or not, but if I boot a live debian USB in the server internet works\n
\n
SOLUTION: aaaaand no it does not work, after restarting docker it seems to work because all the brodges are yet to be created and it takes some time, after like 30 seconds it does not work as before :(\n
\n
- edit the file `/lib/systemd/system/docker.service`\n
- append the flag `–bip=192.168.3.1/24` to `ExecStart=…`\n
- `systemctl daemon-reload`\n
- `systemctl restart docker`\n
\n
docker was the fucker that messed everything up and made me lose a few hours!\n
\n
EDIT 4:\n
\n
it seems that `ip route flush 0/0` restores the internet connectivity until reboot… I don’t know what does this means but can be a temporary workaround I guess? I really have no idea how to solve this\n
\n
FINAL EDIT: I gave up. I removed debian and installed fedora, and now it all works like a charm
