upt, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I hate cardio, so that’s what I do. Weird thing, but I figured if I hate something it’s the thing I need to work on. Besides, it seems like cardio is the thing that helps you lose weight the fastest.

Squirrel, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?
@Squirrel@thelemmy.club avatar

I need a fan or white noise. Silence is just “eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee” until I fall asleep.

Djh8878, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

What are some other rules to the excel example you gave, kinda want to try programming something like this to see how it’d play out

Just look up “The Game of Life.” It’s not really a spread sheet, that’s simply how it’s displayed (grids of pixels that are either living, dead, or food) and it just kinda simulates an ecosystem in the most very, very basic of ways. All you can do to influence the game is change what a grid contains, with the goal (if you can say it has any) of keeping a sustainable system going.

aCosmicWave,

Yep! The spreadsheet is just an analogy I used to help unfamiliar people visualize what I was talking about.

The actual rules for Conway’s Game of Life are as follows:

  1. Any live cell with fewer than two live neighbours dies, as if by underpopulation.
  2. Any live cell with two or three live neighbours lives on to the next generation.
  3. Any live cell with more than three live neighbours dies, as if by overpopulation.
  4. Any dead cell with exactly three live neighbours becomes a live cell, as if by reproduction
relative_iterator, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?

None of these are really my cup of tea but any love for Last Podcast on the Left? That counts right?

colforge, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

If you could get McD’s fries but animal style, we’d have a clear winner. Source: username contains the word obesity

theneverfox, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?
@theneverfox@pawb.social avatar

Silence isn’t a thing.

Sound of leaves rustling, the ocean, or even gentle wind? I sleep, no problem

A house quietly creaking and my blood flowing?

I’ve put on music or Netflix since childhood

Laticauda, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

On my phone I like headphones for music, but I prefer the speakers for stuff like videos. I don’t like my head/ears being constricted all the time, but sometimes when I want the best audio experience I’m okay with it. On good speakers like in my car or my soundbar I occasionally enjoy listening to music without headphones though. Though sometimes I like using headphones for videos too if I’m like cleaning and don’t wanna carry my phone around the house while listening to a video. Or if there’s a more nuanced audio factor that I wanna be able to hear better.

I need over ear headphones. Can’t stand earbuds and on ear headphones hurt my ears and make me feel like I can’t hear as well.

girl, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

I oscillate between 3 moods. For the longest time I exclusively listened to metal and rock, System of a Down being my all time favorite. Also Primus, Korn, Rammstein, Suicidal Tendencies, ICP, and La Dispute (not exactly metal/rock but fits in with all my angry music that keeps me happy lol).

My other mood, when I’m struggling with my mental health, is Pink Floyd. All the Pink Floyd, all day long, listen to the same album on repeat for 3 weeks straight Pink Floyd. My current favorite album is The Final Cut. It haunts me in an amazing way.

Recently I’ve been on an alt/electro pop kick. Ashnikko is my favorite and I can’t wait to see her on tour later this year. Also Kim Petras, Medusa, Poppy (kinda scratches that metal itch too), Royal & the Serpent, YONAKA, SUUNS, and IC3PEAK (ALSO kinda scratches the metal itch).

boatswain, in Hey Lemmy, what are some good public domain books?

The Book of Wonder by Lord Dunsany is fantastic; it’s a bunch of early fantasy stories by an Irish lord who was a huge influence on the fantasy genre.

jflorez, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I hate it during the workout but I love the feeling after. Problem for me is getting started

guckfoogle,

Yup, the first steps are always the hardest but once you get into a routine and start seeing results it does get very addictive, at least for me.

MigratingtoLemmy, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

It’s time to use session over Signal

d00phy,

I never got anyone to use Signal!

MigratingtoLemmy,

I would use session with people I meet on the internet. For my family, they are too entrenched in other chat services for me to be able to move. When I root my mobile I will put these apps in the workspace.

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

why

MigratingtoLemmy,

Even more secure and private. Works with session keys instead of mobile numbers like Signal.

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

is it widely used? how long would it take to decrypt then

MigratingtoLemmy,

What does that mean? You want to decrypt messages from Session and compare it to how much time it takes to decrypt messages on Signal?

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

yeah
