TCB13, (edited ) in Deciding between Fairphone 5 and Pixel 8
@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

Pixel because it supports GrapheneOS thus more secure and private.

Calyx isn’t as good as GrapheneOS, they do a lot of snitching on you (including to Google and Mozilla) and they overlook critical details such as this one allowing the OS to contact 3rd parties such as Qualcomm.

BearOfaTime,

How does DivestOS compare to Graphene in your opinion?

Divest is based on Lineage, which isn’t as secure as Graphene (by a significant margin), but my understanding is Divest has done some things to improve sscurity/privacy.

I realize since we’re talking a Pixel here, Graphene is the security/privacy answer. I have other phones in my “support circle” that can use Lineage or Divest, and I’d like to advise people appropriately.

jacktherippah,

DivestOS is the best option for someone who already has a non-Pixel device. For a Pixel, the developer of DivestOS himself recommends GrapheneOS.

@TCB13@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have an opinion on DivestOS. Never used nor audited the thing so I can’t comment.

Nah it’s still the best

TheButtonJustSpins, in Is it better to use a non-FOSS email and phone number forwarder or to use one of each for everything?

I feel like numbers are much more difficult, aren’t they? There are limits to how many there are, and the generally cost money to register. How does generating a unique number per service per user work?

utopiah, in Feeling like Privacy is a lost war.

IMHO it’d be worthwhile to investigate which one actually did leak it without your consent. It might be pointless for your current address but surely would be for the next one, and everybody else.

More pragmatically even though it’s wrong I’m not sure how impactful it is. Namely you can receive spam regardless of where you live. What’s worrisome is arguably when companies know more about you, e.g tastes, political leaning, sexual orientation, etc. This is a lot more than a name on an address. I believe this is harder to get, especially if you are mindful of what you share. So… is it bad? Sure, is it lost? IMHO no.

beefpeach,

Yeah, I completely agree. I did this also right before I moved and found out my mental health records were being bought by data brokers.

I totally fell down a rabbit hole with that one. Basically, the 3rd-party software that hospitals and clinics use are subject to sell the data that gets imported into the software.

But, you’re definitely right. I’m pretty sure it’s my rental agency along with everybody else.

When, I first moved here with in the first week I received mail from a bunch of local dealers about my Hyundai which completely freaked me out that they all of a sudden knew what I drove as soon as I entered the state.

I’m not sure how data brokers actually work but they definitely operate like organized crime organizations.

drwho,

It’s only a matter of time before those records (and my mental health records too) get involved in a breach.

This does not leave me sleeping well at night.

DogMom,

The DMV and the post office(if you submitted am address change) are the most likely offenders.

Nope… lasted all of 10 minutes.

CorrodedCranium, (edited ) in Is this VPN comparison breakdown trustworthy?
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

It does seem a bit sporadic. Surfshark seems to be on top above other providers like Mullvad and ProtonVPN. It might have a bit to do with how it weights various criteria.

What VPN is best for you really depends on what you value. A bunch of people left Mullvad for example because they no longer offer port forwarding which can complicate things like bit torrenting for example.

    I have still the same good results in ddg, no matter what device or browser. I have noticed that they have some location bias when ddg (and any other search engine i have tried) has non good results globaly but good resulta locally.

    Still better then anything i have tested. Just because there are minor anomalies i will stick with them.

    uzi, in Facebook on separate device

    I use Whatsapp in that exact scenario that you are describing. It’s an old Android phone connected to wi-fi and the phone is never touched for anything outside of Whatsapp.

    Having it setup that way, or for you with FB/IG, if there is no SIM in the phone, do not install anything else, no contacts in phone, you can effectively use it anonymously.

    I suggest you use an Android phone so you can download APK files to install, disable Play Store and similar network services, and maybe once a month download the lastest APK and install to update it. I do that for Whatsapp or updating since I have all Google services disabled on the phone.

    What about an Android VM then? I use it for Steam, and it’s far more convenient. Not to mention doesn’t require spending money on a smartphone.

    uzi,

    You can do that too, use an Android VM. Whichever way works best or works easiest for you.
