They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. Buried highways would be insanely expensive, and in the case of invasion, one well placed shot would completely kill logistics for the defenders as much as it would for the invaders, so probably not the best idea to rely on those
Renting doesn’t just mean that you can’t afford to buy. It’s got other advantages, like not having to deal with repairs, upkeep, being able to move pretty much on a whim… Guess that’s worth it to some ppl
