banneryear1868, to asklemmy in So is the US slipping into Civil War?

The aftermath of racial desegregation court victories are some of the most interesting things in recent US history. A law would be struck down and sort of left like that… and people would take it upon themselves to organize and challenge the new law, often in the face of violent opposition. Freedom Riders taking busses down to the south to challenge desegregation of public transit being met with mobs and put in jail.

I still watch a Babish here and there, he pioneered foodtube but his content was very formulaic and I sort of just got bored of it. I’d rather watch Food Wishes or other cooking channels with stuff I’d actually make and eat. For interesting and entertaining food content I like what the former BA hosts do, and a lot of famous chefs have excellent YouTube content that is very humbly edited and presented.

banneryear1868, to asklemmy in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

A lot of French cuisine. Not talking about laminated dough here which I’ve done many times. More so the complete modern French meal involving multiple reductions and real demiglace and all the techniques that seem to require a full restaurant process. It’s the one style of food I will go to a restaurant and happily pay for once in a while, I understand why it’s expensive to make and respect the skill it takes.

The other style I food I do this with is the very opposite, shitty fast food I can’t make at home.

Yeah they were all students at Humber, in the Toronto area. Obviously all skilled musicians, but there’s a drummer Larnell Lewis who’s a student mentor there, my brother was lucky enough to have him, and while lesser known he’s a drummer’s drummer and insanely skilled. A “Mozart” of drums you could say. While he’s successful and tours with Snarky Puppy and the like, it’s not like he’s a household name or anything. There’s so much talent out there.

Yeah they sort of follow the same trajectory. I do like DeMuro still but it really depends on the car he’s reviewing for how interested I am. Leno is also decent and I prefer his car content to anything he did on late night or comedy-wise. He has that professionalism as a presenter and has so much money that he can just buy like a Merlin engine or have anything he wants to professionally restored. Really cool to see some of that stuff.

Sam Hyde/MDE, some hilarious stuff before Trump then they just became boring political trigger/shock humor. He has this weird feud with Heidecker alleging he convinced Adult Swim to cancel his show which Tim denies as ridiculous. Hyde can be hilarious but he ruins it with sincere right wing politics and trying to be as offensive as he can for the sake of it.

I don’t think she knows the subject matter enough a lot of the time and is part of this weird commodification of philosophy happening. The political angle never bothered me.

They want people to punch down, blame the person scraping by on welfare or the person who’s identity is maligned for what is actually caused by massive wealth disparity. MLK Jr didn’t advocate fighting a vague notion of racism, he convinced black and white unions they were stronger together and that economic equality as a class program was the mechanism to combat the issue, with specific laws and legislation and job action as the tools available. In a certain context, the biggest advocacy group for the rights of gender non-conforming individuals in the world right now is the AFL-CIO.

From the left perspective in the US it’s basically the Democrats who are the “enlightened centrist” position, if not center-right, because they think capitalism is redeemable if it has the right branding etc, and success in the system is at least in theory available to everyone. The right faction are more honest in how they embrace and take joy in how this system runs on exploitation, and are obviously more dangerous in the current climate. The Democrats have to be dishonest because they have to take an inherently exploitative economic arrangement and give it a positive spin.

It is my intention to suggest that Americans, including many historians, tend to accord race a transhistorical, almost metaphysical, status that removes it from all possibility of analysis and understanding. Ideologies, including those of race, can be properly analyzed only at a safe distance from their terrain. To assume, by intention or default: that race is a phenomenon outside history, is to take a position within the terrain of racialist ideology and to become its unknowing -and therefore uncontesting- victim. We have the worst aspect of anarchism, but wait there’s more, we also have capitalism!

banneryear1868, to memes in Neoliberals

Weird meme… is it making fun of how neoliberalism is capitalism, or excluding right-wingers from neoliberal by supposing it’s anti-capitalist? Neoliberalism is a capitalist consensus. If we’re talking US politics, both of the main parties represent factions of neoliberalism. It started with Carter’s deregulations but neoliberal Reaganomics is basically the full-in commitment. Arguably we’ve moved past the neoliberal era since the 2008 crash and are now left with the mechanisms of neoliberalism minus the sincere belief in it.

People do this at Phish shows out of their gross tour vans, you could charge double there at least and corner the market.
