PBS Space Time is the real heavyweight of science youtube, bit of a one-stop-shop for more advanced science questions.
Problem is you can’t jump straight in. It’s proper education, so it builds on itself in layers, and you need the previous layers to be able to work with future ones. You need at least a fluent HS level of physics and algebra to be able to run with them, and if you go there for the answer to one question, you might find yourself going back down a tree of their previous vids just to pick up that important background/foundational stuff that is necessary to see how it all fits together.
Otherwise it’s science-flavored word salad.
Nile, on the other hand, is immediately accessible. He’s doing hands-on laboratory stuff, and explaining particularly important basics as he goes. Chemistry background helps, but is not actually necessary. Love that dude, he’s great.
Also, if you like Dr Becky, check out Sabine Hossenfelder.
Also, props to SEA, who imo strikes the best balance of everyone in the space science community between accessibility and scientific accuracy. As opposed to someone like Astrum, who occasionally will be inaccurate, but is more science entertainment anyway.
Lastly, going to throw out Journey to the Microcosmos’ microscopy vids. Big and far away is cool, but small and right on top of you is kinda cool too. They’re basically nature documentaries, just … bacteria instead of lions and zebras and shit.
I’m just going to comment on work life - the truth is, the older I get the less I care about things like appearance. Depends on the profession of course but for f.e. office work - people don’t care. Especially not if it’s for medicall purpose (they could even have a problem with HR). I meam look at the older colleagues, they themselves look like shit, they don’t care.
But I remember my mid 20s and I was exactly the same, now I look back and it’s a bit funny. It’l be good, go for the braces :)
Adding to the chorus of older folks telling you do it. I’m 45 and currently in braces, for nearly two years now (about to get them off). As far as I can tell, not a single person has reacted negatively to them in any way.
My wife did the Invisalign thing in her early 40s. Worked great! Nobody even knew she was wearing them. She’s much happier with her smile now and everyone benefits from even a small daily confidence boost. Expensive, but money well spent imo.
On a more on topic note: Lemmy is small. We dont have the population to warrant that specific of a community, yet. I’d recommend starting by joining a community about vinyl, making posts about vinyl care, and seeing how they do. When you’re taking up a significant percentage of a larger parent topics feed, I’d say it’s time to splinter off
I’d just add that we run the risk of being extremely unappealing if we have too many communities with near 0 activity. We’re better served at the beginning having fewer, more general communities, to attract critical masses
It’s also a problem with algorithms. Big communities drown out smaller ones because the sorting only looks at absolute numbers. Change is underway though.
I am gonna be a lil wary about breathing while very close to my records now, I should’ve guessed there was something terrible about the big fun plastic music discs 😭 thank you for sharing the video!
Braces on adults are common enough that most people don’t care. There are options like Invisalign, ceramic or clear braces, and lingual braces (brackets behind the teeth) that you can ask about. If you work somewhere with a strict dress code you might want to stick to clear and white colored rubber bands, too. Though outside of that, people still won’t care and colored rubber bands are cute.
I’m in my mid 40s and, due to many things, it’s too late for me. They won’t shift without falling out.
I had half my teeth extracted last year, currently waiting on tens of thousands of dollars worth of implant and bridge work. If my teeth had been aligned, I’d still have some bad ones replaced, but it would’ve been far simpler.
